Makes me sick all the jars I’ve thrown out over the years. I feel like my eyes are opening more each day that we just do what we are told in life without question. Thank you so much for this video. I can’t believe it’s not been more viewed, this is the best nugget I’ve seen in ages.

Theres a lot of us out here that have been reusing these types of jars for years. They seal amazingly! The only draw back is that you really need to keep the lid WITH the jar even in storage to assure you have the correct lid for the correct jar. But, its not really inconvenient to do that. Theres probably a LOT of things that we all could be reusing much more than what we do. We have been living in a disposable society for so long....we have just forgotten to look for other uses sometimes :)

@@millermeadows6359 so true, we do live in a disposable society and it’s such a shame. I think we are in for a rude awakening. Thank you for the amazing video!

I couldn't agree with you more! This video needs to be viewed more often. Too, the explanation and demonstration couldn't be better. Thank you!

Great info! I will be keeping those jars from now on.😊

Absolutely keep them! They at times are more reliable than our canning lids are! The lug lids on product jars are amazing!

I'm so glad to see this! I've reused jars for so many things. If you rub oil on the residual glue (even on plastic containers that I reuse), you will be surprised to see it works great without having to buy the chemical stuff. My only issue is the odor in the lids from pickles, sauerkraut, sauces, etc. Baking soda soak helps but I try not to ruin the seal. I don't have a dw, I AM the dw, so hopefully that helps me save the lids from ruin. Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!

I have heard the crumpling up a newspaper and placing it in the jar for a few days helps to remove the odors from those lids....however, I have not tried it. I will try the oil to remove glue....and THANK YOU for that tip!

Butter or WD-40 are the two I use to get the glue off because I always have those near by. Thanks for all the great tips.

WD40 works great too....and thank you for mentioning that!

To get the glue off the jars just soak them in hot soapy water for a half hour and it comes off. For the more stubborn glue, just rub with olive or vegetable oil after soaking.

In foreign countries they use lug lids as well as some other types of lids and jars. I was able to purchase several cases of 12 ounce jars that were new but had no lids... I found a place online to buy the lug lids.. I also bought some other new lids for the jars I already had.... 3 different sizes.. the biggest issue I had was making sure I got the right sizes...

It is a challenge to know how to measure them when ordering new lug type lids. Berlin Packaging has an amazing assortment at pretty decent prices....

The lug size is metric and determined by measuring the outside diameter of the thread edges on the jar. You can easily get a close estimate by simply laying a metric ruler across the top of the jar. A set of calipers is more accurate. TW63 lid is 63 milimeters and so on.

Another option for removing the glue is old or new unused cooking oil, saturate the area, leave to sit then work it off and clean the jar of excess oil.

7:35 how tight to make them
@JoyfullyOrangeDeborah Жыл бұрын
Hi Lorrie! I second, third, & fourth guessed myself on how tight the lug lids should be but I have some in the canner. Since the jars are smaller/skinnier, I put 8 jars (3 regular mason) in the canner and it's in the steam stream process now for 10 min. I had to guess at how much head space to leave bc your video didn't say & the jars narrow drastically at the top. If they siphon, I hope they still seal or we will be eating a lot of soup in the next few days, lol. I think I can smell the soup in the steam streaming. I'm praying extra over this canner load! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!

Hope it all turned out well....I leave about an inch headspace on these commercial type jars...

@@millermeadows6359 one did not seal but it was iffy & I knew it but decided to test it. Maybe I didn't close it tight enough, maybe the rubber wasn't good enough. 4 pasta sauce jars sealed great. They sounded different in the canner too. Daughter is saving her jars for me. I asked her not to run the lids thru dw but she probably will, lol. I left more than an inch for 2 reasons: 1- the sharp taper at the top 2 - I had dry beans in them that had been soaked in boiling water but not cooked so I didn't know if they would expand. I had very little siphoning, barely noticeable. I will be testing lids for multiple use sometime after I get a ton of turkey canned (#3 is in the oven now, another one over 20lbs lol, & I'll need to make more bone broth from it). Many Blessings!!

I have been saving my jars and using them. I did not know you needed to keep the lid with the jar and they are all mixed up. I match up the size that fits the jar. Do you think that is a bad thing?
@millermeadows6359 Жыл бұрын
No, its not a bad thing....sometimes its just hard to find the correct lid for the correct jar is all. So I save myself the time and frustration, by simply keeping them together.

What if I’ve popped the lid off with a knife ? Is it still reusable?
@millermeadows63593 ай бұрын
It fully depends on if you have bent the lid....or caused any damage to it. I only reuse undamaged lids.

PS ForJars has 30% off Black Friday plus you can still use a discount code for extra off (decide who you want to benefit, I use SHOP1870 bc she is in my top 3 canner videos).
