In this video I show you some of the ways I have been experimenting with using the Blackmagic ATEM Mini video switcher in conjunction with the vMix production software for Live Streaming, Titling, Recording, video playout, video switching and scaling. I look at the USB-C output for the ATEM Control Software and H.264 stream that is seen by vMix as a standard Webcam.

How could you use the Blackmagic ATEM Mini with vMix?

Nice one Andy. I've been looking at vmix for a while. I'm mac based currently but the idea of a cheaper Windows laptop that I can easily replace out on the road is compelling. Do you like Vmix over say Wirecast?
@apntv

In Focus to be fair I haven’t really used Wirecast. I quite like the way vMix works although it can take a while to get your mind around how to do some things.

@@apntv That's true of Wirecast as well. I've found it to be quite "buggy" on Mac OSX which is why I was considering a switch to vmix. For now OBS does the job and is much more stable

Depending on the number of inputs you need I prefer vMix as it worked right away and had very little configuration that I needed to do to make it work. Now I can say I took Jake Gosselin @ChurchFront advice when setting up the configuration but I tried OBS and just didn't like the interface as much. Following Dan Ballast @BallastMedia and Jake my church has some pretty decent videos. bit.ly/Redeemer_KZfaq if you want to check out the videos we have been recording. I personally think for a 70ft distance between the camera and the subject the picture is pretty darn good out of the little Canon VIXIA R800.

One scenario I would like to use my ATEM Mini for is a skype interview with remote guest. I normally do this with Wirecast, but it uses a lot of CPU overhead, and sometimes unpredictable results. Essentially, would like to take the video from the Skype video and assign to a shot on ATEM, have an iPad with some slides on another shot, and my own camera as a 3rd shot, and be able to stream that on KZfaq.

The main challenge is with the audio if skype is running on another computer. If Skype is running on same computer, how would I route the video into the ATEM Mini?

We have been testing out vMix call and SRT connections and feeding that into the ATEM with some good results.

The Hyperdeck Shuttle is a very old model now, you can pick them up pretty cheep on eBay. It’s made by Blackmagic, who make various recorders.

Hi there, I have one question... when you want to stream in 4K with the vmix, is vmix upscaling/converting the HD signal from the ATEM to 4K? Or do you have to use an external device, like the teranex for that? Thanks in advance!
@apntv
@apntv 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not quite sure what you want to achieve. Streaming in 4K is challenging for very little benefit in most cases and if the source is only HD what exactly us the point? I have only done one livestream in 4K and that was directly out of KZfaq Space in London.

@@apntv Thank you for your fast reply. I just want to stream in the best quality wicht is possible. I have 2 blackmagic 6k cameras, so the source is downscaled by the ATEM. When See the decklink quad hdmi Recorder, in the use with vmix, i now ask myself why i bought the ATEM...

@@aubisoka got ya, I’m all for recording the highest quality I can for some things. We just did a job where we recorded 4K ProRes HQ for TV and a 4K version for KZfaq. This was Premiered and only then did I discover that KZfaq only streams Premiere contend in HD, so it was pretty much a waste of time although the video is now available in 4K. I think streaming in high res has diminishing returns. Facebook is generally only 720p, most people view it on phones or tablets, for me the sweet spot would be HD at around 6-9Mbps.

@@apntv Ok...hmm... thank you! I thought youtube was doing the best job in this case... I thougth its the upload speed maybe, what is forcing the stream to HD... do you have any idea or solution with another Streaming service? Well I know the bandwith problem from Zoom, Skype and so,... but how do TV-Broadcasts make it? its really desparating...
@apntv
@apntv 3 жыл бұрын
@@aubisoka are you streaming from a fixed location, if so what upload bandwidth do you have available? If you are streaming from different locations I would certainly forget 4K. In my kit I have a LiveU Solo that can, at a cost, upload across 4 different connections and bond the stream together at the other end allowing maximum bit rates, around 6Mbps HD and minimises the risk of stalling due to bandwidth congestion etc. If you are interested I talk about that in the Fabuloso Behind the Scenes video and how I used LiveU and the ATEM Mini for the 12 hours of stream.

I would like to ask you a specific question, I am a vmix user and I want to buy atem mini pro and extreming whit hardware of the mini pro since it is more stable and move to multicams, the question is whether to integrate the mini pro to the vmix or integrate the vmix as a imput to the mini pro ???? I think your experience can give me a bit of clarity between the two options, thanks

Can you use vmix into the media page for the ATEM Mini? I'm trying to find a way to have pre recorded videos to load in to the ATEM
@apntv
@apntv 4 жыл бұрын
The media player in the ATEM Mini is only for stills. You can take an HDMI output from a laptop into the ATEM Mini and use vMix to playout videos from a list and cut to them. You might even be able to use something like a Streamdeck and companion to create a macro that plays the video and cuts to the input on the ATEM with one key press.

Hi @@apntv. Can you make a video showing how to do this? I understand how to use HDMI out to get the video into the ATEM but I don't understand how you will use vMix to play the video once it is in the ATEM. I am using the ATEM Mini Pro to encode and stream. I am looking for an alternative to purchasing a streamdeck. Thanks!

Hi Sir, how about the video quality if we use this device as capture card on vmix? I ever use Aja U-Tap as a capture card to Vmix. When i capture power point. That's still ok. But when i capture live cam, the video have delay and lag. Bad to see for my live production.

So how would you monitor the 4 inputs? Can you output a preview to switch between?
@apntv
@apntv 4 жыл бұрын
The Mini doesn't have a Multiview but there are a few options, depending on what you want to do and the budget. For me, I see this sort of setup as maybe a 2 camera, 1 laptop setup for a conference. 1 wide shot locked off so no preview required, laptop input with no preview required and looping the operated close up camera through a monitor to always have a preview of that. Now you can output a preview through the one HDMI output when working in Program/Preview mode but it is not a multi-view. The other more extreme option is to loop an SDI out from the SDI to HDMI converters into a Multiview box and have a full Multiview of all inputs. Of course the cost of the latter would be almost as much as buying the TV Studio switcher instead that already has Multiview built in.

Hello. I look for the best solution to integer invited people in my streaming. I use Atem TV studio. With zoom running for people supposed to speak in my streaming, i can ad this stream as a source. But i would like to have this window integrated in may upstream keying greenscreen. The problem is that this model gives inly one upstream key. It seems that i have to choose wether pip or green screen but without the possibility to scale the invited people.

when using atem mini on USB and audio input on MIC 1 i have latency between inputs, i always have to use HDMI out to capture card to make audio and video sync you have this issue?
@chrissorrynothappening7370
@chrissorrynothappening7370 4 жыл бұрын
If you are using this setup with vMix and the Audio is setup in a separate input you can use the delay option. Check out @Ballast Media (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6mdpZN83Mi8qHU.html) to help figure out how to get the difference between the audio and video feeds. My using a mix off my Audio Board and an HDMI feed off my camera to the computer needed this and worked beautifully.
@apntv

I always usually take audio into the camera as this avoids any sync issues so I haven't experienced it however I know that it is an issue for users who do take in separate audio. Sometimes you can add delay if you are feeding the output onto a computer for streaming/recording etc.
