This is a fantastic overview. For everyone that thinks this is a lot of work, it certainly is, but its not something you have to do for every shoot or every photo. To get close enough, white balance is often enough. You can also create a few profiles for each camera/lens combo in various common lighting situations and get "close enough" for most of the time and only pull out the works on a job that requires perfectly accurate color. Sometimes accurate colors aren't even "correct" for a scene.

I set my aperature, ISO & shutter speed with the help of my Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR. Then I use my Expo disc for white balance by taking a direct picture of my strobe light or speedlite flash. Finally I use the Color Checker Passport with the help of a model holding it next to their face. Post production using Adobe Lightroom. Works every time.

Started using this a couple weeks ago after watching and it's making a big difference in post. A little cumbersome having to restart LR afterwards but it saves a lot of time. Recommendation for replacement is two years as the colors will fade. Maybe sooner if you use it outdoors a lot

no need to calibrate for each exposure but rather create a profile for every light set up (eg. ambient, strobes, mix light etc.) i doubt it is possible :D means bad business if that happens

If you do this for every shoot dont you end up having hundreds and thousands of profiles? or can you delete them again and the colors stay right?
@GhostofRazors13 жыл бұрын
@peckerdecker Lets say we are both using Apple monitors to make it easier. While they are both the same type, you understand they are going to be different. When we both calibrate our monitors we both use the same color profile 'AdobeRGB 1998'. Thus the calibration device and software will create a profile that should make our colors the same on different monitors. Same with the printer/paper. You can create a profile for a printer and send it to me anywhere on earth and I can work with it.

@Fearlessroby Buy a calibrator for monitor, calibrate it. Buy Colorchecker passport and calibrate your camera. Buy a calibrator for your printer, calibrate it. For each of them create a profile. Be sure you create a profile for each illuminant in which you will shoot, work and view your prints. Also, be sure your printer and your monitor are good enough, because calibration doesnt make your equipment better, just take them to a standard.

tremendously helpful~!. As for the color correction, 3rd row of below panel will be very useful if i apply the correct digits of R/G/B, C/M/Y. BUT,,one Question. If u already adjusted the WB b4 shooting,, why bother to correct to WB once again from the color checker, unless u want to modify it????.

I have a question on how the Colorchecker actually works. My impression was that it would give a profile which would essentially standardise colours across images. For example if I took an image (using the Colorchecker) under one set of lighting conditions, then did the same under different conditions, I could use the Colorchecker to make them comparable after applying the custom profile (e.g. same RGB/Lab values for the same colour). However, having used it I see that they vary dramatically, and I am thinking this is not how it works afterall. Am I trying to get it to do something it just can't?

What are the white swatches for on the grey card/color checker if you only use the grey swatch when selecting white(grey) balance?
@nobocks7 жыл бұрын
i finally purchase this and it is great but i have a question : if i take a shot without the card daylight what color balance is the best to use on camera ? Actually i use a custom white balance with the natural grey of the card but if i want to change the color balance i "can't" because i have not taken the card on a picture. But if i keep some reference pictures i can use the same balance and change temperature a bit with copy past balance ont the other picture. so why xrite not add a tool to change the balance without the card in post prod to add this ? Because if y use a picture in another collection i need to have ref on this collection too :/

Will the ColorCheckerPassport still be accurate if my light intensity changes just like when a picture is over exposed or under exposed? Do I have to keep my setting constant or can I still change my iso, shutter speed, and aperture without affecting the color change of the picture?

Your exposure for the colour checker needs to be accurate, don't blow any highlights on any channel!

Hi Folks, when you are in the studio, and you take a shot of the X-rite, then continue to shoot, do you need to take another shot of the target if you move or adjust the lighting levels? Or, do you take a shot of the X-rite one time with the lighting set up for that session and use it for the whole session? Thanks!
@Darkmanmr477 жыл бұрын
Theoretically yes.. but if the changes are not too drastic, just keep it as is... if you want it the most accurate however, shoot once every setup. A great tip is to keep a small 18% grey card with you at all times. Better yet, cut out a small portion of it and velcro it to your subject in a place it's easy to clone it out. Shoot all you want in all setups and correct the balance once for every setup, after everything is correct, clone out the small grey card patch ;)

Question: Whats the expiration time for the colors on the ColorChecker? UV light will shift the calibrated colors a little over time. Anyone have any advice on that?
@melissahall70097 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I'm confused about one thing. I read that even if you can't continually take a shot of the color checker it's better to use any profile created with a certain lens than none at all. So, I took a shot of the color checker at golden hour one night and then throughout my sunset photos I used my fold up grey card (which is easier for me to take a pic of, since I can't hold the color checker and shoot it) to keep getting the correct white balance. So my white balance looked great in my photos, but I then applied the color checker from that lens (taken at golden hour) and it automatically changed my white balance and it looked awful. I changed the white balance back to what I shot in camera but then the colors all looked really weird. What do I do in a case like this? If you could answer me I'd really appreciate it. I contacted customer service for X-Rite and was told to read the manual but I can't find this scenario and am spending a lot of time trying to find the answer in videos. Thank you!

Mark does set the white balance before taking the first shot. So all this images are already corrected, right? So how does it changes so much when he sets the software profile "elie profile"? Is there any that is more right, more accurate than the other? and when he set the WB for portraits saying that he almost always choose the second pannel, creating his style, does it mean that he always get through all 3 WB settings? or, if he just select the second panel of the portrait series, it doesn't matter if he already setted WB before, right? because PS does that for you by calibrating in that square... or?
@Darkmanmr477 жыл бұрын
A raw file does not have a colorspace or white balance information attached to it. It mostly affects JPEG in camera files. Better to do this in post processing ;)

Great Video, thank You. Just one question : if you create a profile for all your shoots, I presume you will delete some profiles over time. When you delete a profile will this not affect the picture you made with? I am still new to LightRoom, so I do not know how profiles are embed in my DNG. Thanks Again, Didier
