Using the G Soprano Bugle as an Orchestral Trumpeter

The 3-valve G soprano bugle was originally built for use in DCI drum corps, but has been obsolete in that world for decades. Now, you can find them pretty often for not much money, and they are a perfect instrument to use for those few orchestral trumpet excerpts that go below the Bb trumpet's low F#. With a .470" bore and a large-throated bell (too large to accept most trumpet mutes), it is essentially a beefy trumpet in low G.
Although the soprano bugle is known for being a screamer with a great high range (which is true), it has lots of untapped potential as a G alto trumpet in concert music. Since many were made and the only people who want them are drum corps alumni bugle collectors, there are a lot to go around. The two manufacturers that made 3-valve G bugles are Dynasty (like mine) and Kanstul. The Dynasties usually go for cheap, while the Kanstuls command a higher price. Good places to search are eBay and the ""G" Bugles For Sale-Wanted-Trade" Facebook group.
If you do choose to pursue a G bugle (of any type), make sure it does have 3 valves, as 2-valve G bugles show up more often than the 3-valvers do.

Given that classical trumpets in the 19th century were often in G or F, seems like a good idea to me.

When I was studying Composition with Hugo Weisgal in the 70’s I wrote a piece for bugle corps. He asked me to bring in bugles so he could hear them. I brought in soprano. Mellophone. Piccolo baritone and contra base 2 valve bugles. He loved the sound and wanted to write for them. He was disappointed when I informed him that orchestra players did’t use them.

You have to be patient. I still see the Dynasties show up on eBay for $200-300 every once in a while. But they go quickly!

Right? This Dynasty has a screaming high range, of course. But every DCI alum old enough to have played on the Gs already knew that. The low range is the hidden gem!

this instrument is to trumpet what the low B extension is to double basses. don't want a five string just for Pines of Rome? tired of tuning down your low C extension inaccurately? why not the B extension?

I've played a couple. They are definitely cool and I would love to have one (or a few), but they are way too expensive...they cost more than a custom Shires! If one wanted to spend that kind of money to be able to play low F, there are lots of options, including custom work. This G bugle was $100 on eBay and does the same job.

Oh come on....why not give the uninitiated the challenge of a 2-valve G like I played? "Whaddya MEAN I can't play a C#, D, Eb, or Ab in/below the staff? Well, the whole point of this video was to show people how to solve the problem of low notes in old trumpet parts, and she’s doing that by using a 3 Valved sop. A 2 valved one would ruin the point of this video.
