Sometimes we forget that smartphones are not the only type of phones that you can get these days. Flip phones may not be popular but they still work well and the DuraXV has a higher protection rating then most of your regular phones.

I still remember my prepaid Kyocera flip phone from the mid-2000's, my very first cell phone. Really loved it, too.

Thanks for this... I ditched the smartphone about 9 months ago and used this Kyocera for about 5 months and loved it... except for group text messages, which ended up being the reason why I went back to an old iPhone. I currently am using an iPhone 5 with no email/social on it, primarily because the flip phone can't handle group messages well and I'd often get replies from other people before I'd get the initial message (and my replies would almost always get sent weirdly to others). I really wish they'd make a flip phone that could handle group messages well, upload high resolution photos to the cloud and sync with a cloud-based calendar... we could really use an option in between a basic phone and a smartphone (especially for kids).

Yes it's a category that is being ignored right now sadly, I will see if I can find a good option in between and share that on the channel

My employer gave me one of these, and I’m really impressed! The only thing I don’t like about it is it’s slightly bigger than the old school flip phones, but it fits in my pockets easy! Just like the comment below this one stated we get too addicted to staring at screens in our daily life. This is a phone that is just a phone!

I have had this phone for about 2 years because I wanted something more durable than my regular flip phone- it is incredible. I still check my email and get to listen to the radio. I can drop it in water or down a hill etc. Its all I could ever ask for, especially as someone who spends a lot of time outside

I purchased the DuraXV LTE model (with 4G technology) back over the summer, it's a great phone for 2019 going into 2020! The thing is built like a tank, has the ability to switch to desktop mode for viewing such sites as Facebook Messenger, plus it has a very handy flashlight too, which I've always wanted. Pretty long battery life also. Totally blows away the Samsung Gleam flips I'd been using for years. The only drawbacks are that I haven't been able to set up my Gmail account in the Email option on the home screen, as it keeps bringing up a bunch of settings I have to fill in (but it *is* viewable when using the browser option, as I have it saved now as one of my Favorites, which is why I didn't bother contacting Kyocera for assistance), also the hinge has a bit of a "click" feel to it when opening up the top lid, so I'm thinking that'll give out at some point down the road, which is what eventually happened on one of my Gleams, but that's probably a ways off....otherwise this phone does the trick for me and then some. I'm not a fan of touch screens and don't want to deal with cracked or scratched screens, screen protectors, having to get any insurance, etc., plus I don't need to take high quality photos or video. The internal and external speakers are great and the stereo headphone jack is nice also. No issues with dropped calls either. This phone is ideal for me!

I have the kyocera dura xe from att ... love it .. no gps, no tracking, just an old school phone that is used for that primary purpose, to be used as a phone and not an internet addicted mini tablet that people are attached to for 18/7 ... i dont want social media, dont care for it, its none of my business .. i dont want my business out there, i dont care about anyone else business ...

I just recently got one of these Kyocera flip phones. It works very well and my only complaint is that the battery doesn't hold a charge very long. I am not a heavy phone user and normally use the phone for no more than a half hour total in a day, yet by end of the day the battery needs a charge again. My last flip phone, a Samsung model, generally held a charge for three or four days. I have never used a Smartphone as a personal phone. In fact, when I was working as a state engineer---I am now retired--- I was required to carry a cell phone. They upgraded me to a Smartphone and I hated it so much I gave it back after two weeks and requested a simple flip phone. Anyway, this video was informative and I agree with what he said. The phone has a nice rugged feel to it and excellent sound quality.

I had the older version of this phone for 4 years and it went through hell (worst was I dropped it off a railroad bridge 25 feet up and it smashed on the bolders below and bounced into the river. After I found it a half hour later I thought for sure it was toast but didn't change a thing) and still works perfectly and the battery still lasts a full week even with daily use to this day. It is now as of last week my 2 year olds new toy as I finnaly got a smart phone. The duraforce pro 2. I like it but hate having to charge my phone every 2 days. Almost went with the sonim xp8 due to a huge battery but Kyocera is a proven work horse and 1/2 the price and my favorite WORKS WITH ANY KIND OF GLOVES ON! I'm now a loyal customer of Kyocera.

Superb video TK Bay----exceptional in all aspects. I am curious about this devices sound quality during conversations via the cell phone operation though--something a bit lacking with my 14 year old Motorola flip phone. :) I don't know I need or have use for every feature this offers but I'm told Verizon can now block incoming text messages, that a sender immediately knows its NOT been received---that's very important to me. I don't have and never will use any sort of "smart phone" as that's something I just do not need or want---in no way would it be useful to me. Its good knowing this has at least every feature I now have and find perfectly suited to me so that too is another huge benefit. I'm considering whether I really need or should take advantage of Verizon's insurance---not knowing the long term durability of this brand that's something I might opt in on.

I finally had to give up on my KYOCERA flip phone. It had a cracked case (no biggie) and wasn't holding a charge. The batteries were no longer available so I went to Verizon to purchase a replacement / "upgrade" (NO, I DON'T WANT A SMARTPHONE!) and walked out with a model (not KYOCERA) that wasn't particularly user friendly but had a slim profile . I text quite often and the keys were giving me carpal tunnel syndrome. Returned that phone , paid a ridiculous restocking fee and walked out with the DURA XV. I love it even though it's kinda' clunky. Same user friendly layouts as my old flip phone and this one has a flashlight! Cool.

I sell phones to military on a base and the one with the highest demand is anything without a camera, because the regular smartphones would be too expensive to have them removed, thanks to glass screens and back now. This model is also sold without a camera, but I still havent sold one yet because no one can justify paying almost 300$ for a flip phone with no camera.
@ariip
@ariip 5 жыл бұрын
If you want something, you should ideally get the device that is optimized for the job and does the best job possible. A smartphone does lots of things, and none of them very well. If you want a camera, get a real camera! You would be buying this as a durable flip phone, in most cases, that is worth the 300 anyway by itself. Most phones otherwise are delicate crap. Also you can get this online used for much less than that.

Tis is a great video -- thanks for the presentation. I'm currently using an iPhone SE but been thinking about going back to a flip phone lately. Reasons, simply, is I want to downgrade my electronic interface in my daily life. I feel too "plugged in" to electronics and it's driving me crazy. I'm wondering if going back to a flip phone would relieve some of the electronic noise in my life, or would it frustrate me after being so used to (or programmed) into using a smartphone the past several years. I'm not sure...

I should add my flip phone has a QWERTY keyboard which is so much easier than typing on a touch screen and WAY easier than on a standard flip phone. The old 2G/3G is supposed to be switched off next year so we'll have to cope with one of the lesser options.

I never gave up my flip phone and still have the casio rock which is a workhorse and takes my unintentional abuse -- it got run over by a bus the first week I had it and it took it like a champ as it was in closed position. I also have the kyocera brigadier smart phone which takes my unintentional abuse and has sapphire glass. The smart phone is to help me drive around and look up stuff and be a small computer and do the occasional call. I do text on the smart phone but don't give the number out to many people. I do give out the flip phone number as my primary number to talk on and it makes it easy to tell people don't text me just call because I can't text on the phone... *haha I am training them to remain human and talk to me. I dislike immensely the lack of connection texting has bred. I find that when I am needing to dial a phone quickly, the smart phone enrages me and the flip phone handles the job like a champ with ease.

Does that mean the unlocked version works on Verizon and ATT to give you more options?? Can the wifi be turned off? A link to the unlocked version if it does Verizon would be nice:) Thanks

Most app's on android have a native support for their laptop version as well ,this looks like a solid device (and the amazon page says it runs Android ?) so getting an APK ,should allow you to sideload apps right ?(the apps that can run on such a small screen ,like perhaps a stripped down version of Whatsapp ),and if i recollect correctly , my first android device (low end ), had a weaker processor clocking in at only 830 Mhz ,(in 2012 ) and was able to use it for almost 4 years (yes it had a removable battery ),and seeing flip phones having better specs now with that very useful Secondary display ,would make it an ideal phone for kids and people who wanna keep their work and personal life separate.

I want to go back to a flip phone, as I do not use Facebook or Twitter or any of that nonsense. My main obstacle is I enjoy streaming music on Spotify, using Google maps for navigation and various hiking apps on backpacking trips. If I could find a flip/non-smart phone that could do those three things, I'm sold.

Thank you TK for making this video. I have 1 question. You said the hone supports an SD card, so am I able to add more space to this phone since it's only has 4G and can I download apps?
@TKBay

Seems to be the perfect non-smart phone for me, but I read a lot of reviews about short battery life. Not many options out there for 4g flip phones, and since it otherwise serves my needs ( I work in construction) I will be getting one. Hope it gets that couple of days on a charge at least.

I have had it for four days and just from texting the battery drains like I cannot even believe. It's not worth it for that alone.

I've had the same flip phone since 2012 and wouldn't change to a smart phone for anything. The only thing I don't like is the phone company took away the ability to send pictures to others or to retrieve them from the flip phone to a PC.

Excellent phone! I just replaced it with the older version. That phone lasted 3 years. Battery still strong, excellent reception on calls. Fell multiple times on the ground. The phone is a beast! I had to replace mine because I had 3G. Had to go 4G Much better internet experience!

Nice video, I just downgraded to the kyocera, Dura, XV extreme plus and its a great phone, I want to something that offered a little bit of connectivity with a hot spot without all the distractions for my smart phone and it's been proven to be successful. Only thing I wish they had on. It was voice to text T9 option old-school texting is kind of a nuisance..
