For World Oceans Day (June 8), UVic applied theatre PhD candidate Dennis Gupa reflects on using the tools of drama to bring about social change, build a sense of community and grapple with the effects of global warming on the world’s oceans and island nations. Gupa, the second artist-in-residence at Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), has studied the impacts of a 2013 super typhoon on fishers in the Philippines. His doctoral research amplifies their vivid stories of ecological knowledge and vital messages about climate change. ONC is a UVic initiative. In this new video, Gupa discusses his inspirations and the ONC role, which wrapped up in April 2021.
