In today's video, we are going to take all those theory concepts we have been learning over the years and throw them away.
We will be using an E Dorian backing track for this class.
Our subject for this lesson is dissonance, a topic that does not need much explanation. Dissonance is using notes that are not part of the key, this is what is known as playing outside. You can't use it all the time, but if you inject those dissonances every once in a while, they can sound really cool.
The first core element to play with dissonance is having good rhythmic phrasing. With a good rhythmic foundation, everything you play is going to sound good. I personally like to use sixteen note subdivisions to create rhythmic phrases. Rhythm can make those bad sounds sound good.
I discovered the scale that we are going to use in this lesson by accident while preparing another lesson. It starts with an E minor blues scale between frets twelve and fifteen, played on the first three strings. The idea is to use the same fingering pattern in all three strings. This gives us the third, the fourth, the diminished fifth, the fifth, the major sixth, the seventh, the root, the ninth and the third. The only note that is kind of dissonant is the flat five, but because it is the "blue note" our ears are used to it.
Next, I took that shape and moved it a fret higher. This gives us a lot more dissonant notes. However, as they are equally mixed with good notes the result is easily accepted by the ear.
When it gets really fun is when we take that formula and mapped it out across the fretboard. We start seeing some familiar patterns that are easy to play, some chromaticisms and much more.
Blend this shape with the minor pentatonic and blues scale for a perfect blend of in and out fusion playing.

Lydian #2 #6 Hungarian minor mode 6 (dbl harm min) Or double harmonic major mode 2 however you want to look at it. That scale works over almost every chord. It works very nicely with both major and minor. This is a very easy approach to using Lydian #2 #6

Another good lesson. Key here is the rhythm (IMHO). If one is 'in the rhythm' one can almost play anything and it will sound good. I.e. if you play outside notes with purpose, with the rhythm and then resolve the the good notes on the right beats, it will all work. Thanks David for leading to this; most helpful - as always!

Yes. Playing in-time; with the rhythm, is the key to sounding like you're playing with conviction. This took me years to figure out on my own. And, playing with conviction allows you to play any dissonant note in passing and sound "good".

You don't have to be "outside" to have dissonance. That's NOT what "dissonance" means. Yes, "outside" is definitely "dissonant" but "dissonance" does not mean being "outside." You can have dissonance and be in key.

Inside or "outside," it's ALL theory. Theory is not a box and thinking that way holds many people back. Theory is simply attempted explanation of what's going on in things that we think SOUND good. Theory is OPTIONS that can be explained and taught. It's NOT a set of RULES.
@sebastionhawk5565
@sebastionhawk5565 3 жыл бұрын
@@SomeDumUsrName actually, theory IS a set of rules, as in rules when it comes to creating and naming chords...just like nomenclature in chemistry...but, I get your intended point, which is that one does not have to stick to the rules in a complete fashion. Theory never held me back, but, it gave me a solid foundation.It is I who holds me back when I forget tha I can step outside of those set RULES...
@SomeDumUsrName
@SomeDumUsrName 3 жыл бұрын
@@sebastionhawk5565 That's with regard to the nomenclature. I'm not talkin' about the nomenclature and neither were you in your original comment. We are talking about the music itself and, once again, the theory - and nomenclature for that matter - is explanation and nothing more. Something that gives a means of communicating what is going on. Just like the explanation of whatever it is you do when you "step outside the box": The explanation of what that is and how it works is more "theory." It's ALL theory and there is NO BOX. There are rules present in only one place: Your ears.

As a kid I defined Jazz as a group of people that all play the same song but not at the same time, and fusion as a band that all play different songs but at the same time. Nowadays I love fusion. Nice lesson. I play for 40 years for most soloing and do not know theory but I play all over the fretboard. I now try to learn theory to know what to play instead of going autopilot . What I love, playing without thinking while watching a movie or so.

I always find it funny that when one overlays out notes after having begun by overlaying in notes over the chords, once you switch to out playing and return back to the in notes the in notes always sound so much worse and it takes so much longer to transition back to in key, vs going from in to out usually involves just a second or two of wrong sounding. Like our brains are more willing to accept out notes and then they sound way better but once you've adjusted the regular old notes sound so boring
