I Mix Blue Dyes To Apply On Oak And Maple To Make A Gorgeous Blue Wood Stain. I used Keda Liquid Dyes to make this high end blue wood stain.
I hope this video helps display how powerful, versatile, and clean this wood dye is on both wood substrates, and gives a good detail for the blue wood stain results.
The dye ratio used in this blue dye video is 1/2 teaspoon of the Keda Blue Solvent Based liquid Dye to 8 ounces of lacquer thinner. The weight of this 1/2 tsp volume comes to about a little less than 3.00 grams of the 30 gram bottle of Blue wood dye. Keda Dye also offers a (5) color liquid dye variety pack, also called The Keda Dye Kit, as well as the individual solvent dye colors.
I also cannot say this ratio will work with other wood dyes, so more wood dye may be required for other wood dye brands.
These liquid blue dyes can be found at: www.kedadyeinc...
eBay: kedawooddyes.st...
Amazon: www.amazon.com/...
Thank you for watching, and I will try to make some follow up wood stain colors with the liquid dyes as well as with the Keda wood dye powders.

If you are going to use oak, then you should use quarter sawn oak so you get some figuring. If you use either red or white oak that is rift sawn then you get this fairly large light areas that do not take the stain or dye. It is difficult and expesive to use quarter sawn oak, but the results are worth the effot.
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 9 ай бұрын
I will see if I can get some quarter sawn. When I went to the mill, they only had plain slice and rotary. I guess there was a huge project that had taken up all the supply. I totally agree. It is difficult to get your hands on. I think many contractors are using 1/4 sawn because they tend to hold it for bigger projects and higher board feet requirements. Maybe I will have to bring donuts in for the front office and see if I can get a mix lol 😆 👍 Wish me luck

I actually had another couple of thoughts, if you get the chance; firstly, how much control could I get with these dyes? I imagine that, being dye instead of paint, I would get a lot of bleedout if I tried to apply it with a fine brush or something, but it might be a cool experiment. Secondly - I notice your website lists the dyes as non-toxic. Do you know if these are safe for food-grade applications (like a cutting board)? Thanks, and I love your videos! I'm the kind of person who watches two hour long videos, so at least as far as I am concerned, don't feel guilty about posting longer videos!

The wood dyes will run along the fibers of the wood, but if you mix even just a small amount of lacquer, shellac, etc. or other sealer choice they will not run and can be used like a very clean transparent paint. The wood dye liquid are definetly much to concentrated and potent, as well as the mixing transfer agents in them wood not make the liquid dyes food grade. Even the wood dye powders are much to powerful to be food grade. They would need to be refined further, and diluted considerably. Now if they are covered with a food grade shellac or top coat sealer they would not come into contact with foods. I still wouldnt use it on a cutting board though, but honestly, I do not use anything on cutting boards other than olive oils. Hope that helps out?

Hi all, I'm a newbie building my first guitar kit and have been researching ideas for how to finish it. It's a les Paul semi hollow type kit with a quilted maple veneer that is really nicely figured. Was originally gonna try to do a burst but after watching lots of keda videos, I believe I'm gonna do a solid color and straight lacquer. I just love the purple or blue or orange.....who knows. :). Anyhow, will the powder give me the same result as the liquid? If it's not the same how much powder would be the the equivalent of 1/8 teaspoon of the concentrate? Thanks a bunch and I will be buying your products soon.

Thank you for watching! I would say 1/8th tsp to 4-6 oz warm water or 1/8th tsp powder dye to 1 oz warm water and 3-5 oz 91% rubbing alcohol should get you pretty close. You could mix it on the lighter side with 6-8 ounces and add 2nd or even 3rd coat to give more color control based on the wood and the wood prep. If just trying to get a general color similarity, that should be a good starting point. Hope that helps out, and thank you again 👍

Thanks 🙏. What’s the advantage to using Alchohol over only water? And do you have any advice for staining maple without getting blotches?
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 6 ай бұрын
@TzufFamilyBand blotches are typically produced by the wood itself. When you say, "Blotches" I would need more details. Dying a 5A grade quilt maple causes, "Blotches" (the light and dark contrasts) based on the varied wood densities of the grain, and heartwood which is often the desired look. "Blotches" arent always bad 😉 I need to understand your definition of "Blotching", before I can answer this better.

shamus jubenal here is a link to the blue dye powder, but was done with a higher concentrated version. If you were to use a heaping 1/8th tsp to around 6 ounces of warm water, it would be a similar coloring. Here is that link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5aEZLeQqNbenI0.html As for the least smelling solvent, would probably be a 91% rubbing alcohol, then I would have to say Denatured alcohol. The powders do work well, but the liquids are a bit cleaner, and has a little more transparent look when mixed with the solvent bases. I am going to be doing a comparison video soon hopefully. Hope that helps out :)

The blue dyed wood I brought in from off camera was a curly maple technically, but we cross cut vertical and horizontal instead of ripping it vertically, to get the "Tiger Maple" effect. I really am not sure if that is how they actually get a, "True" Tiger Maple, but I just love the pattern of the grain that way. The dye mix was 1/8th tsp to the 4 ounces lacquer thinner and one good coat was applied. It was also sanded to 180 grit. Thank you so much for watching! I really do appreciate it!

Sarah I think you mean if I wet sanded or polished after applying the blue dye? In that case, I did not. This video was really just about applying dye on wood, and some possible tones on different wood species. The finish would become much deeper and the best way I can describe it is a magnified look, as well as having an even cleaner overall appearance. If I would polish the sealer afterward, then I would get complaints of modifying the finish. I do plan on making some more advanced videos, but I am working on my workshop right now. Should be ready soon though :) Thank you again for watching.

How deep does this dye penetrate? I'm curious if in the course of laying a wood floor, if I could dye a plank of wood and have the dye penetrate deep enough that when the floor is sanded and prepped for sealing, the stain would remain?
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 7 жыл бұрын
Annony Mouse Hi thank you for watching 👍 The answer really varies based on the type of wood being dyed, and the reagent the wood dyes are mixed with. The deeper the penetration, the more wood dye coats you may want to apply. Meaning, a less penetrating Dye will have more of the wood dye remain in the surface, pooling more wood dye in less space. The deeper the wood dye penetrates, the less wood dye will be in just the surface, so follow up coats will deepen the dye coloring. Hope that part makes sense. The liquid dyes are a slightly smaller color molecule, and if mixed with say acetone or denatured alcohol (thinner reagents), they could penetrate up to 1/8" in soft woods. On hard wood, they could penetrate a little less, but still should get in there at least 1/16" in the deeper pockets. This can also drive deeper with added coats, and how heavy they are applied. I am actually doing a sand back video using the blue dye on a hard curly Maple this week, and it may help you a little better. Thank you again for watching...

Sandra Serrano I would use a little less since tinting the wood sealer will lay more atop of the wood versus penetrating the wood, which will require a little less liquid wood dye. Say a ratio like 1/8th to 10 - 16 ounces of wood sealer, otherwise you could always just add a few drops of the Liquid Blue Dye at a time to create the specific look you are looking for by testing on a scrap piece. How long does the dye take to dry out between coats?
@KedaWoodDye
@KedaWoodDye 7 жыл бұрын
Simon Claeys it really can vary a bit between the wood substrate being used, as well as the reagent the liquid wood dye is mixed with. With all that said, when the wood dyes are mixed with the lacquer thinner, it dries quite fast like within 20 minutes it will be fully dried for sure. A little tip, if you would like the liquid dye solvents to last a little longer for longer penetrating times, I will add about 1/2 tsp of lacquer itself to help the dyes last a bit longer on the wood to penetrate a little longer. Also, letting the liquid dyes rest about 20 - 30 minutes after mixing the liquid dyes will be a little thicker. But once you stop applying the dyes, it dries really fast with the lacquer thinner. Thanks for watching, and hope that helps out :)

Simon Claeys I am sure it will. These liquid dyes are very high quality, and please don't make the same mistake in over doing on these. I tried to show a little better coloring, because the camera didn't seem to pick up the actual beauty and depth, but adding more blue liquid dye wasnt the answer. It just needed a white back drop. If going with 1/2 tsp to 8 ozs only do the one coat, unless you like the darker blue instead. Thank you for watching, and remember with a guitar, you will want a scratch resistant sealer like a nitrocellulose lacquer or something that is specifically designed for resisting scuffs and scratches. Glad it helped out : )

Bahahaha 👍 you can always hit mute, or skip forward, backward etc. It isn't TV Brother, you can go to other places in the video with just a click of the mouse. Some say I don't give enough info, some say too much info 🤷‍♂️ so now I just do what I want to do. Either way, thank you for watching, really do appreciate it 👍

I think the video is great. If someone doesn’t like all the talking they can just mute and keep it to themselves. Thanks for the video-I am going to search your videos for more detailed information on how to prep the wood before dying. Thanks again!
