Ralph Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. This performance was recorded Jan. 8, 2023, at George Mason University's Center for the Arts Concert Hall in Fairfax, Va., conducted by Marine Band Associate Director Maj. Ryan J. Nowlin.

I played this in college band. This was such a great piece to play. I especially enjoyed the first and third movements. I played this on clarinet

Such glorious sounds from the absolute best wind playing in the world! The solo playing is marvelous! Kudos to the Eb Clarinet player as well….she is terrific!!

When I was in band we just called them baritones rather than euphoniums.

I am such a huge fan of the British Band Tradition (Grainger, Holst, and Vaughn Williams). There is just something about the sound and feel of all of these pieces in comparison to some of their other works (e.g., Holst's Planets, Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto). Grainger appears to be the exception, as both his works for band and orchestra sound very similar. Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of music with us!

6:18 1st introduced to RVW in late 60s early 70s as a highschool band. I listen to the suite every chance I get. Bravo Marines.

I got this song to play with a symphony I’m auditioning for, and I realized halfway through the first song that it was a song I played in 10th grade, a song I’ve been trying to place the name of since then and now and could never figure it out!! I’m so excited to finally know what that song was

This and Holst's 2nd Suite are my two favorite folk-inspired classical band pieces. I usually hear both of them each summer at outdoor municipal band concerts. I would love to hear the Marine Band play this during their annual performance in Cedar Falls, Iowa at Sturgis Falls Days.

I played English Folk Song Suite as a freshman in the top band at La Porte High School in 2022, and me and my other friends who played it with me still sing this legendary song!

Thank everyone in the band for a beautiful performance of this wonderful music. I am an oboe player. The oboe solo that begins the second movement was pure terror for me when I was a freshman! Now, fifty years later, it is still scary! 😁 A community band that I play with performed this last year and I still get nervous.

I can’t express how helpful this video is. I’m playing this in band right now. I’m on 1st trumpet and have the solo at 7:52. This video has given me a really good idea as to how it’s supposed to be played and it’s been a really beneficial tool while learning.

This is a great band piece and I am anxious to hear how we, the Bella Vista Community Concert Band, will play this in a few weeks. We got the 'stuff' to sound 'almost' like this. (I say 'almost' because I don't know of any groups that could outplay the USMC band!). Thanks for having confidence in us, Gary. Great choice!

Yes! I love playing Eb myself. Very difficult and exposed at times but also very rewarding!

@@MaxisaBandKid The Eb Clarinet is essentially the piccolo of the Clarinet section except for in parts of Europe ( especially Italy where they have the even smaller and higher Ab piccolo Clarinet). As you can see the Eb Clarinet player is sitting next to the Piccolo player as they have similar parts.

I wonder too? I would assume beforehand, I could be incorrect. In the rehearsal he wanted Sgt. Matthew Harding, the (cornetists) to play tacit to allow variety within the piece by having the clarinet play both solo’s in the first movement. He is emphasized in the third movement. In this video the cornet plays the second solo in the first and takes his own in the third. Colonel Fettig seemed to want the clarinet to take both solos in the first which is why I think this may have been recorded before the digital rehearsal.
