Aircraft carriers are the centerpiece of America's Naval forces - the most adaptable and survivable airfields in the world. On any given day, Sailors aboard an aircraft carrier and its air wing come to the fight trained and equipped across a full range of missions. They are ready to control the sea, conduct strikes, and maneuver across the electromagnetic spectrum and cyberspace. No other naval force fields a commensurate range and depth of combat capabilities.

In 2005 during war games the Swedish diesel-electric submarine carried out several simulated attacks on CVN-76 USS Ronald Regan, and took up close and personal periscope images with clear shots of the flight deck crew. Then it quietly moved off. The pics are in the subs mess room walls today.

That's because the war games were held close to shore in an area where the carrier would never operate during combat. Also a diesel powered sub could never have the range to catch an ocean bound vessel. They are for shore operations.

it’s a good thing we are not the experts., Super Carriers are NOT yet obsolete, in my opinion. They can still delivery many more planes to the enemy’s than a light carrier, having air superiority is the key in todays combat. Enemy’s still needs to find and track the carriers in the vast Oceans which is not easy to do.

You need multiple systems to deal with multiple attacks. Or possibly more of them meaning more of what we already have on each ship double, triple protection from onslaughts. The laser is the forcefield Shield if you only knew how to put it together. It's easy use the umbrella on a pole effect. Rudimentary but, it's a start. Just point the beam down from the pole all the way around the pole. Down towards the ground at an angle.

For me it will always be having the ability to park up way over the horizon and operate well beyond the range of your own ships sensors under a kill web of forward flying aircraft example the F35 and E-2D Hawkeye (sensors) and the CSG air and ship defence system ( shooters) all integrated networked via their respective Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) and the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air concept (NIFC-CA) all designed to tie together target data (links) from the ships and aircraft in a carrier strike group , one serious over the horizon threat which was clearly demonstrated by the new QE V/STOL joint carrier strike group which most certainly rattled the Chinese, note history about to be made by Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, a helicopter pilot, will be in command of one of the USN 11 nuclear aircraft carriers in 2022. coming off the back of being the first women XO of the USS Abraham Lincoln.

A new carrier plus planes, bombs and a year or two of operating costs adds up to roughly $15 billion. Assuming nukes aren't used, can a carrier even do $15 billion worth of damage? Can it carry enough conventional bombs to do even $1 billion worth of damage? The lethality per dollar -- bang for the buck -- seems terrible. I understand carriers were crucial in the pacific in WWII but carriers cost so much less in the 1940s that they made more sense then. No longer. Is anyone in the Navy asking these big questions in a serious way?!

Best navy in the world by far. It's amazing how the US has 11 super carriers and 9 light carriers we call amphibious assault ships(Wasp and America class) for a total of 20. Crazy how hard they are to sink too, the US couldn't sink the USS America for 4 weeks and had to scuttle it. "The U.S. Navy knows this from experience. In 2005, the Navy itself targeted the decommissioned carrier America in order to determine just how much punishment the vessel could withstand before slipping beneath the waves. "The ship was pummeled by explosions both above and below the waterline," The War Zone reporter Tyler Rogoway explained in 2018. "After nearly four weeks of these activities, the carrier was scuttled. On May 14, 2005, the vessel's stern disappeared below the waterline and the ship began its voyage to the seafloor." "America stood up to four weeks of abuse and only succumbed to the sea after demolition teams scuttled the ship on purpose once and for all, it's clear that America was built to sustain heavy damage in combat and still stay afloat."

@@GVK-jm9sg Yes and no. The America class holds: "They can carry about 20 to 25 AV-8B, F-35Bs, or a mixture of the two" The Wasp class holds: "The size of the air combat element varies depending on the operation: a standard air combat element consists of six Harriers or six F-35B Lightning IIs and four AH-1W /Z Super Cobra /Viper attack helicopters for attack and support, twelve Ospreys and four Super Stallions for transport, and three or four Bell UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters.[10][8] For a full assault, the air group can be maxed out at 22 Ospreys, while a Wasp operating in the sea control or 'Harrier carrier' or 'Lightning carrier' configuration carries 20 Harriers or F-35Bs (though some ships of the class have operated as many as 24 Harriers), supported by six Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopters for anti-submarine warfare."

I served on a carrier in the pacific for near 4 years this carrier had the best menu of any of the carriers, there was one thing, If I went out on deck and looked up into the sky, if I saw no albatross or seagulls in the air, it seems when that happened we had chicken on the menuI was not the only crewman to notice that. Also we saw duty in war zone. With great success. Also carriers have more defenses than just being a very large ship. Carriers are multiple hulled ships hits by enemy arms do not penitrate but 1 0r 2 hulls. The ship can then be balanced by flooding comparative areas on opposite side and steam to a repair facilitie. .

If the US goes to war with any large, industrial nation, its natural to assume that ships will be lost. The thing people forget is that any enemy would need a means of delivery. Strike fighters would be met with the carrier wing well beyond the ideal range to release their payloads. Submarines would be detected by escorts (especially if the group is on full alert and at battlestations). A ship based attack would mean that the ship would need to bypass air defense patrols and the strike group escorts to launch. Even then, inteception is most likely. Even with hypersonics, the missile would have to calculate the path of the carrier (which would be impossible if it was executing evasive manuevers) and that would mean the missile would likely miss as the time for mid flight adjustment would be dramatically shorter. This, in turn with the strike group using EW or even spoofing the radar on the warheads guidance system would make it even harder. In summation, a fully armed and fully alert strike group would be VERY difficult to stop. When you factor in other services contributing to any operation, there would be a serious fog of war for any enemy. This is why China is shit out of luck. If the carrier group wont enter a kill zone but can remain at a standoff distance, it can operate alongside B52s, B1s, B2s or even aircraft from the USAF to truly pack a mean punch. The strike group would also likely be accompanied by newer technologies that take into account what the US knows about Chinas newer technology.

Valid argument, but I disagree on some minor points. Hyper-sonics are improving by the day. Just because China does not have an accurate one yet, does not mean that others don't. Cruise missiles are getting so much range that you don't need plane or ship-based launches. And these missiles are being taught to recognize certain ships, just a different kind of 'facial recognition'. None of these videos I've seen even cover long range smart torpedoes. And considering the cost and capabilities of a carrier, a nation could send 200 missiles, torpedoes all at once and many will get thru. And no one will even mention or game-plan for nukes. I live in Norfolk, VA, and I have a toe in the water on the topic, not just a casual observer. And to myself and others, many are coming around to the idea that Super Carriers are putting too many eggs in one basket. PLUS, I'd say in a decade, all planes will be turned into drones. The Air Force has a squad of F-16's in Florida that it automated, and they can take-off, dogfight (and win) and then land. Look up QF-16 on KZfaq. And most of those videos are 8 years old, think about what they can do now. Anyway, sorry reply went so long.

Given the advances in CHinese missile technology and the large amounts of munitions Chinese Type 055's carry, I tihnk the the most important thing v- and the cheapest and fastest thing to do, id immedeatly install 5 Phalanx on each side of all the carriers and double+ their magazines. I would also double the Phalanx mounts on ALL vessels that currently have them. There's going tobe too many incoming missiles for the US Navy to deal with.

Speaking of missile defense of the aircraft carrier I have a question? The hatches that keep the missiles secured and away from the elements that it looks like they have either or small explosive to blow the doors off or some other mechanism to eject them from the front and the rear of the missile what happens if that hatch doesn't eject properly? Would that missile still fire? If that missile does fire I know it wouldn't explode because all of the modern missiles have I set timer or distance that they have to travel before they arm themselves after being fired but could it not damage the launcher? If there was enough function in the hatches would that disable the missile from launching? Just seeing the image of the missiles firing I wondered what if don't know if anybody has the actual answer.

What the US needs to do is come up with stealth drones undetectable and smaller. If you build many of them you can launch 10 or 20 at a time towards a target so it's hard for the enemy to get them all. At least a few would get through enemy lines to hit their target.

How many did they win before losing? Anytime a nation beats the US in a wargame it's huge(Look when France finally beat a f22 in a wargame) where it had the advantage and got to start from the rear. The UK royal marines beat the US marines recently, why do you think that is? Rarely ever do wargames start neutral but to try to learn how to get out of a bad situation, which goes for all nations, hence why war games dont matter. Look at the old Gotland submarine war game as another example, the US was in shallow water and couldn't move, where a carrier would never be unless docked. We do these games to learn what to do in the worst possible scenario. Otherwise it looks like this in 2018, the Battle of Khasham where 40 US special ops killed 200-300 Russians. Battle was so large F22s were called in... There is audio and some limited video on youtube if you want to look or want links, source: "According to the U.S. military's official statement, around 10 p.m. local time on the night of 7 February 2018, a force of 500 pro-government fighters consisting of local militiamen, government soldiers, Iranian-trained Afghan Shia fighters, and reportedly Russian contractors launched an assault on a Syrian Democratic Forces headquarters near the town of Khasham, located on the Euphrates River in Syria. Supported by T-72 and T-55 tanks, the pro-government troops first shelled the SDF base with artillery, mortars, and rockets in what U.S. military officials described as a "coordinated attack." Around 20-30 shells landed within 500 meters of the headquarters. According to the U.S. military, the presence of U.S. special operations personnel in the targeted base elicited a response by U.S.-led coalition aircraft, including AC-130 gunships, F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles (MQ-9), AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, B-52s, and F-22s"

lazers. I wonder are they in use in space as well. with all those satellites they sent up in the last years must have a purpose and better internet I don't believe is what they are doing I mean they were able to do that with 5 or 6 satellites why were they sending 80 at a time up there over the past years from the defense force. i couldn't understand at the time but now it makes sense 🧐

Hey looks like you guys were right "" That car guy"" just can't handle an accurate and balanced reply from someone who served 36 years whereas he's either still at senior school dreaming of going in the USN but is unlikely to pass the medical or entrance exam or just reading reports that he cannot grasp or comprehend!!
