I worked at Newport News Shipbuilding during the decommissioning of 1 of them. Can't remember which one. But I do remember it was very well maintained and almost brand new condition for it's age. I was in Security Department 015. Our job was to prevent further theft of the teak boards from the weather deck. The shipyard and Navy were making plaques for the plank owners and various officials. I agree they were retired way too soon.

haha. What anti-ship missiles can this destroyer carry? AGM/RGM/UGM-84 are already as old as mammoth excrement and have a completely insufficient range. Apparently, therefore, there was no intention to use them for arming this destroyer. Are there other alternatives? Tomahawks of the marine type are blunt in pointing and slow. That is, there is simply no effective anti-ship weapons for these destroyers. But they are very expensive to build.

@@stevecherk1022 It's primarily an R&D Project, but currently there is a hypervelocity round being looked at to replace the LRLAP. If successful, looks like it'd be more of a mach-7 homing bullet than a proper missile, but the range is absurd on it.

@@stevecherk1022 The Zumwalt was never meant to be strictly a fleet area defender. It was always intended as a multi role, ballistic launch platform that is more than capable of complimenting the AB class in surface defense. The knock isn't it's surface defense ability, it's the areal fleet defense. It's not equipped with SM-2, 3 or 6, but that's by design. In it's place it carries the AN/SEQ-3 which is considered more of a defensive weapon.

Sending planes to kill a Kirov when it's AA system is not occupied is suicide. That's 1 Kirov BTW. In the 1980s when it was launched, the mighty US Carrier battlegroups had to be reformed to help defend against it. In the 1980s, 1 Kirov was designed to fight and barely win against 1 US Super Carrier, 2 missile cruisers, 3 destroyers, 2 subs, 3 frigates etc all by itself without any support. You see, it's not just 1 carrier. It's the whole damn Battlegroup. And it was strong enough to strike enough fear in the US Navy that they had to redesign their entire battle formations to stop just 1 ship. Yes. Now, the Kirov's hardware is outdated and it will have very much difficulty in taking on a modern USN fleet, but imagine if it gets modernised up to current standards? Hehe... Now that my good sir, is something to Marvel at. The true Overlord of the Seas will rise once again. PS: Nakhimov is being modernised with S400, S500 S550, Pantsirs, 80 Zircons 😂, and a ton of other stuff. So let's hope Russia actually has the funds to complete that ridiculous monstrosity.

Zumwalts are useless in combat - they have no munitions for their two guns and are having massive problems with their electrical system, their computers and their radar array .. USN attempted to put too many unproven technologies on a single ship .. they should have done one at a time, perfected it, worked out the bugs and then added the second .. the guns should be replaced with 5"/64 guns that are compatible with what's on the Burkes, the radar array should have been identical to the radar array on the Burkes - basically the Zumwalt should have been an Arleigh Burke with a 14,000 ton displacement .. prove the hull works, prove the electrical works, prove the engines work {electric drive}, prove the computer hardware and software works and THEN go for the New Technology Radar and new technology Missile Control System and and fancy new guns .. they have an excellent platform in the hull - it supposedly works very well in rough seas - but they fucked up on all the fancy new systems - none of which are working worth a shit .. Too Much Technology .. they should have stuck with tried and true systems that we know work and that have proven themselves in Battlespace ..

It's a half functional design, which has been cancelled. I don't think it belongs here really.

It will be hard to sink with torps and slow missiles - hypersonic missiles like Tsirkon - yes, but it is Russian missiles :) Tomahawk are cruise missile - it is to slow for avoid AA hypersonic missiles.

@@xaina222 ESSMs can shoot down hypersonic missiles... All you need is to track it. Say they were 2 miles from you, then it wouldn't work otherwise evem subsonic missiles can shoot down Hypersonic missiles if they are being launched far enough out. Hypersonic missiles can be easier to shoot down since they can not perform good S maneuvers do to their speed and ending up entirely off course if the target launches air defense when it's around 20,000 feet out, the hypersonic missile will try to evade being shot down and end up off course moving at it's speeds. For example, most if not all ICBM/BMs are hypersonic, yet all countries have used slower missiles to shoot them down... Every missile has it's pros and cons. Subsonic missiles are good at being stealthy, but are slow. Supersonic are a good in between but not as accurate as subsonic. Hypersonic is extremely fast but no not perform good S maneuvers do to it's speed without overshooting the target.

In this case it would take between 4 to 6 ESSMs(all based on weather) to match 1 hypersonic missile just to score a hit if you really wanted to make sure you had as close to a 99 percent hit ratio as possible. But thats also why they are quad packed. Hypersonic cruise missiles fly in a whats called a "high-low flight". They start off high to reach hypersonic speeds, in thinner air, to save fuel, then go lower and try to skim the radar horizon to evade radars, but still start off extremely high and easy to target from far away. Glide vehicles are in space... They are used on ballistic missiles... They use space and thin atmosphere to reach there speeds.... "maneuvering isn't really essential" ..... What are you talking about... "The glide vehicle can make really crazy maneuvers tho" At this point you are trolling or don't know what you are speaking of. The glide vehicle is hitting mach 20+, be it American, Russian, Chinese,etc. it doesn't perform S maneuvers at those speeds well, any slight turn by 1 degree at those speeds will make it miss its target since it wont have the time to correct course. Mach 25 for example is over 19,000 mph(over 30,000 kph) a 1 degree turn will send it thousands of miles off course.
