. Gender dysphoria is the distress a person feels due to a mismatch between their gender identity and their sex assigned at birth. People who experience gender dysphoria are typically transgender.
In this video, Dr. Adam Jones discusses the diagnostic criteria of gender dysphoria for trans individuals.
He also discusses the management of gender dysphoria.
DSM-5 criteria state that two of the following signs and symptoms need to be present for at least six months.
• A marked incongruence between one's experienced and assigned gender.
• An urge to get rid of one's primary or secondary sex characteristics.
• A strong desire for the primary or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender.
• A strong desire to be the other gender.
• A desire to be treated as the other gender.
• A strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender.
There is a range of different treatment approaches that can help alleviate gender dysphoria. However, these treatment approaches are not widely available.
Many trans individuals who experience gender dysphoria see gender-confirming medical interventions.
Gender-confirming medical interventions may alleviate gender dysphoria.
Therefore, potentially preventing mental health issues experienced by trans individuals.
Gender-confirming medical interventions include hormone treatment (HT) and gender-confirming genital surgery (GCGS).

Estrogen doesn't change the voice. It softens skin, changes body odor, redistributes fat, etc.

Yes it does. Hormones do affect ones voice, testosterone creates a lower voice and estrogen a higher one. Obviously this does not mean that you can predict someones hormone levels by their voice.

@@69limon I can't tell if you're a complete idiot or just ignorant. I'm literally on estrogen. First of all WOMEN* inject estrogen, not 'men'. Second of all, testosterone expands the vocal tract and estrogen does nothing to it. That's why cis women keep a high pitched voice while it drops for cis men. When you go on estrogen, your vocal tract doesn't randomly shrink. We endure a ton of vocal exercise to make our voices sound feminine. For trans men, thus when they inject testosterone, their voice gets lower.

I hate having dysphoria. During daily life I am always uncomfortable with being a female and wish I was born a male, but then sometimes (like rn) I wish I could go back to when I was younger/before I had dysphoria. I was so happy and now I feel like my life is just shit. Dysphoria itself sucks ass but me wishing I could go back to the times I was happy just makes me feel even worse.

I obviously don't know how you feel concerning spirituality and God but I will keep you in my prayers.. Although I can't relate exactly to what your currently experiencing I have had deep bouts of clinical depression and opiate/stimulate abuse while receiving judgment from ignorant people around me claiming "I have my head up my a**" .. Just making it worse.. There is a God who created you who didn't intend for us to inherit this fallen world mess we're in who knows every single thing about you who loves you and will help you if you cry out to Him.

I am a boy but I feel I'm in the wrong body. :( I am like you I remember childhood that I didn't know I have a gender dysphoria And I wish I were in those days In Childhood and early teenager time I didn't have many problems and depression I wished just to play girlish games with dolls or dress as a girl But because of a conservative family I understood it is not OK Dysphoria sucks If I were in a right body I would be now a high educated successful person

@@verttisyrjala2897 umm no. Estrogen does not thin out thick vocal cords. The reason why trans woman sound feminine is because we train our voice to be a higher pitch. Estrogen does not make your voice higher pitched. The reason why trans men have deep voices with testosterone is because Testosterone thickens vocal cords.

Call it what it really is, sex dysphoria. I have what I consider gender repulsion, I'm female yet I feel trapped, depressed, and damn near suicidal when forced into gender stereotypes , yet I have absolutely no issues with my female body. I actually take great pride in being female, and being a woman. People like to tell me I'm trans or "non-binary", and I say bullshit, my sex is the only thing I identify with.

By the sounds of it in your case it's more than you just want to be the woman you are and be yourself with your own interests and life path without being shoved into a small box of enforced stereotypes that aren't you. As is and should always be the right of anyone, cis gender and trans alike, the freedom to be yourself and live your life your way instead of what others insist on.

Oh i used to get mistaken for a boy when i was 3-5 years old and i actually loved it "for some reason" :) nearly 10 years later and i realized i had and still have gender dysphoria so even though I'm not "fully" trans that helped me realise that i am not cis. (Questioning nonbinary)

What it mostly comes down to is if you hate all your female parts or not. If you dislike your voice and you chest, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have gender dysphoria. If you don’t like your genitalia, and prefer it to be that of the opposite sex, you probably do have gender dysphoria.

@@shorttbish9565 If you are very young, you can still grow out of it once you are an adult, or maybe sooner. That's what happens in around 80% of cases. Remember that once you take hormonal blockers or cut your genitalia, it's over - you are sterilized forever.

uhm Estrogen doesn't change your voice? Once the vocal cords have grown they don't shrink. So FtM can experience voice changes, but MtF would require surgery to change their voice...This is very well known in 2020 so, I'm wondering where tf your sources are.

you can be transgender without having gender dysphoria, transgender and gender non-conforming individuals have existed for thousands of years and was seen as normal (i.e. hijra/chibados/two-spirits/etc.). gender is a social construct after all, and in the context of academic ethnography it is defined as a superset to the bimodal distribution of biological sex development

You’ll need to go to therapy first This means getting all possible signs of trauma talked about. Like mental disorders, sexual trauma, environmental trauma etc etc. when those are fixed you can move on to phase 2 and that’s helping your physical body.

Some of the words used in this video are problematic. Don't call a trans man a woman, or a trans woman a man. You can say "amab" which means "assigned male at birth" or "afab" which means "assigned female at birth." Those are better ways of phrasing it. Gender dysphoria is about feeling wrong about your body and assigned sex, whether that's sex characteristics, how people perceive you, or both. There is some misleading information in this video

It sounds like you're making stuff up to win arguments by using semantics. Gender doesn't exist and never has. Sex exist and those are your chromosomes, XY or XX. Orientation are things such as straight, Homosexual and Asexual. Not mentioning bisexual since its neurologically a fetish. Gender was coined by a man named John money, no relation. He would experiment on children sexually trying to reaffirm different sexual beliefs on 2 male children, the 2 boys killed themsleves. What I'm trying to say is you can never change the glutamate, Neurotransmitter and hormonal levels in the body without massive consequences and I find your use of the word problematic on something scientifically correct, problematic. There is no misleading information, its simplified information.

'dysphoria' originates from a greek word meaning 'hard to bear', and in English means 'a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life'. The 'gender' bit just denotes that it is dysphoria to do with an individual's gender. thats the extent of my knowledge but you should be able to find a lot more with a good google search

why does this pop up when I search how to cure gender dysphoria. I'm not trying to be mean or offend anybody by any means but I find myself disgusting just because I have gender dysphoria. I don't even know how to tell my parents about it, and this country I live in makes everything worse I don't know what to do anymore...

Inta My advice, for what it’s worth: take a deep breath. There is nothing wrong or gross about you for having dysphoria. You’re enough. You’re not alone. If you have friends or teachers who would be supportive, maybe start there. If you don’t now, it does not mean you won’t down the road. If you think ftm channels would help you, I’d recommend jammidodger, Noah finnce, Jackson bird, and miles McKenna (mileschronicles). I’m afraid I am much less knowledgeable on mtf resources, but I know they’re out there.

About the support from teachers and friends, I can't really do that because 1, I'm anti-social. 2, People here will judge you over the simpliest things for example if I was to say that publicly everyone would be like "wow this dude is gay", Don't get me wrong I have nothing against gay people it's just I don't wanna be called like that. I also can't really afford a surgery like that because economically my country sucks and the surgery is 21500 Euros here.

And like so many others you will likely need to move to a location with greater tolerance for those like yourself. Unfortunately the road to true self realization can be long and hard. I love this video, but I think it needs to be said that gender dysphoria isnt only experienced with the desire to be trans, and doesnt always lead to it. When you consider if you arent your own gender, that's gender dysphoria. Dysphoria can include being the "other", aka genderfluid, agender, nonbinary, or of the like.

As a trans person, I appreciate the acceptance and support! I also caution that there is a lot of misinformation in this video and it misgenders trans people throughout. As a note on semantics, I am my own gender, and always have been. My gender just didn’t match the one expected of my biological sex. And I didn’t have a desire to be trans, just being myself landed me there since my assigned gender didn’t match my actual gender.

I’m looking for what dysphoria means cuz I’m a 9 year old and non binary, and I feel like I don’t “pass” I feel like I still look like a female, I’m soon cutting my hair but it feel like someone is always there to tell me I’m not good enough, I look too feminine. “She, Her, She, Her.” It’s like my brain is wrapping me up with pain. “You don’t look like one, go hide, no one is allowed to see you.” What does this mean? Is this dysphoria? Is this what is causing all my voices and pain?

I'd like to be able to pee standing up, but I'm pee shy and my anatomy doesn't really work well with STPs and just causes me to go use the bathroom again. I'm nonbinary btw. Also should probably note that not all trans people know from a young age, I've struggled for years with what I perceive to be gender dysphoria, but not sure what I need for myself, it isn't always a straight cut path to another binary. Sometimes it is fluid like water. Everyone's gender journey is different.

I think I might be a transgender, I always have doubt about my sex. I totally support LGBTQ community, But the idea of being transgender scares me. I don't know how to come out to my parents, my friends, or being afraid of losing my job or marriage. I don't want to be a transgender, is there any medical treatment help me get rid of this thought? No, there isn't. Oh I'm sure people would suggest conversion therapy but conversion therapy is abusive, cruel and doesn't work as you can't force someone to be who they're not. The only person who truly knows you is you, it is understandable to be afraid due to how badly trans people are treated in the world. But as I said, only you know you. It's common enough for cis people to have doubts about their sex and their gender, to question and wonder who they are though a lot of cis people don't tend to look inward for the answers to themselves as they're not really sure how to.

Good question! I could be wrong about this, but it generally makes transgendered people feel more comfortable in their body when they get a surgery. It’s not mandatory, of course, but it’s just something that helps lessen gender dysphoria :)

Gender dysphoria or unhealthy gender roles being pushed on children, making them think it's not ok to be a boy that likes makeup, which further leads to wanting to get genital surgery? I could imagine how being told your entire life it's feminine to like makeup then being an adult man who likes makeup would make you think you must have been born into the wrong body. You cannot say to the patient: "Okay, so we adapt our world to your world, so that you feel better." It's the patient, his mind and psyche, what needs help. Hope you understand.
