USN 65 tonner now on Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad - 7/2/2024

6 күн бұрынThis past week another centercab locomotive arrived on the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad in Portsmouth, RI. This time it is a recently retired United States Navy General Electric 65 tonner from the USN Shipyard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This locomotive, numbered USN 65-00566 was built in November of 1940 and previously worked for Yorktown Weapons Center (Yorktown, VA), US Army 7342, and Hercules Power as their #1. The locomotive was overhauled in 2007 at the Montreal, Maine, & Atlantic Railroad at their Derby Shops and appears to be in great shape to this day. Stay tuned for future updates on this locomotive!
The Newport Secondary Rail Line is also home to another former USN Portsmouth, NH switcher in the form of Porter JPEX 7349. Here's a couple videos of that unit in action:

I love that iconic center cab design on Newport & Narragansett. I'm happy to see that these locomotives aren't being scrapped. Great video!

NICE!! Of the 44, 65 and 80 tonners, the 65 tonner is probably my favorite... Glad to see another one is saved from the scrapper. Also good to see that it's one of the earlier versions of 65 tonners (the rectangular hood door vents are the give away), just like the recent 80 tonner. What's interesting about the 65 tonners... Some of them have slightly larger diameter drive wheels (38" as opposed to 33" like the 44 and 80 tonners).

She looks like she’s in very nice shape! I also noticed that she’s equipped with roller bearings; something that’s rarely seen on GE 44 - toners. 😊

I’m assuming the purchase of such a small locomotive type has to do with the fact that they currently do not have a rail connection which likely means they are limited to what they can ship on a truck. Also price is likely a factor.

@@OceanStateRail What they can put on a truck or barge over is probably exactly why they stick to smaller center cab diesels... A side benefit is that these locomotives are powered by basically over the road truck engines, so the engines are easier to service than a large locomotive.
