In what was one of the greatest matches of the US Open 2017, Juan Martin del Potro eclipsed Dominic Thiem in an epic as the sun set on Grandstand. Del Potro came back from a two sets to love deficit in a US Open match for the ages.

@ US Open Tennis Championships ; A GREAT match, comeback, overcoming of physical illness by JMDP. The Highlights are severely insufficient [As Usual]!! Certainly better than the pitiful Highlights at the time, after this match [of just a few minutes (for a five set match) and similarly for the 2018 USO R3 Marin Cilic vs Alex De Minar]. Now, after 1 1/2 years USO TC produces THIS video of that GREAT, AMAZING match??!! It is a despicable depiction and distortion of that match. Not only are written statements about this match lacking in the description above, none of the comments and statements from the announcers-commentators about Juan Martin Del Potro's illness are contained in this video?!!! It is obvious how ill JM looks in his face, his lack of energy, ability to move, especially in the first two sets. He was so ill, and lacking energy from the flu or virus and had a fever prior and during the beginning of the match. He took a remedy or medicine, apparently which seems to take affect or effect in the latter part of the second set, Then, by some amazement, he finds some energy to take the third set by a huge turnaround, in a blistering 'storm', then struggles but manages for the next two sets and finally finishes it out. He manages to his some of his high power forehands, but his backhand is noticeably weak and many of his normally more powerful shots do not have the 'zip' and 'sting', thus Dominic often is able to return them and sustain longer rallies. Still in the end JM was triumphant and victorious mostly over his own body, with a strong inner will, desire, perseverance, persistence and determination. JM recovered from that illness [flu-virus] and played well in the QF, defeating Roger Federer. He was well, but as he said, his backhand was not yet up the level needed [as he had in the past] still from his wrist injury-surgery recovery to defeat Rafa in the SF [which was also evident at RG SF 2017]. Looking at their Wimbledon 2018 SF and USO 2018 SF, then the Final vs Novak too. We can see how much better JM has been doing, also winning in IW in 2018 defeating Roger Federer there. We hope to see him return back to his great level again after the injury to his knee cap. He struggled in the opening tournament this year, last week loosing in the SF to Mackenzie McDonald [We could see his lack of movement in that match especially. Hope he will be well to defend his title in IW 2019] Also, another disappointing aspect is the modification of the court surface again in the 2018 USO [was also noticeable in 2017]. The speed and bounce should return to what it was for years in the past, similar to that of IW, Miami, Cincinnati. The players should adjust as they do for these other tournaments, and have for many decades, instead of the USTA adjusting the surface to equalize. The same mistakes have been done in Melbourne, Australia by the Aussie TA for the AO, and The All England Club for the Wimbledon Championships. It was noticeable how much less affect JM's powerful forehand shots have when the surface is slower. It was more noticeable in 2018 than 2017 at USTC during the USO, and at Wimbledon in 2018 too. If JM had played in 2019 at the AO, We may have see it also, though USO 2018 was noticeably [intentionally] slower than 2017, 2018 AO and certainly than 2018 IW, Miami, Cincinnati [as these three do not adjust their surfaces]. Interesting too, that the last three GS tournaments have experienced unusually warm and hot weather during their tournaments; Wimbledon 2018, USO 2018, AO 2019. The 2018 USO and 2019 AO had to implement 'extreme heat conditions' rules. Had all three tournaments had their usual faster surfaces, the points would finish quicker, thus the games, and likely the matches too. Hope the appropriate folks at the USTA get their minds, head, thinking corrected so We can see better tennis as it should be. All The Best and Much Success! Sincerely, :-)

No one can tell me different - If Delpo doesn't have his wrist injury troubles and stays healthy throughout his career, the "big four" would have been the "big five". He definitely is worthy of more than 1 GS title. He fears no one and incites the fear of everyone else. When he's blasting that forehand, he can beat anyone anywhere. And his backhand is solid too! A nightmare matchup.

@listenchump4041
@listenchump4041 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, his grip and takeback are not considered ''modern'' today. Del Potro has an eastern grip, and very few players today have that (Federer, Bautista Agut, and a handful of others) while today is more about topspin with the semi-western grip and for some the western or close to western grip (Khachanov, Sock and Edmund are western, while players like Thiem, Nadal and Shapovalov are close to it). Delpo has a very high takeback, while today they put more emphasis on a more back and forth motion. An eastern grip gives a lot of power, but what makes Del Potro's special is the accuracy that goes with it. Also he does not always hit hard like a Rublev, he plays safe and then unloads and that destabilizes the opponent.

This is what I mean when I say and comment that U have to have mental and winning strength to overcome a crisis in a tennis match like this and facing a very good young talent like Thiem. Del Potro may not have been complete due to injuries, which have taken its toll and to this day have kept him away from competitions. But I come back and I repeat, Del Potro is an example to follow for all these boys of today, the integrity, dedication, bravery and mental strength to counter the negative point in a match of this magnitude. IMHO!🎾👊🏻💯😉

He was mainly kicking it out wide to Delpo’s backhand. Even though he is tall, hitting a backhand that high and moving with his wrist injury would give Thiem more looks on a second attack ball then hitting a flat serve body or forehand, heck even back hand as Delpo could just use all of that pace and hit it back. But kicking to his backhand made him generate more pace and his backhand was lack luster after his injury.
