He was unlucky in 2018 (severe heat impact, lost to Millman) and 2019 (back had failed him, lost to Grigor)... and those 2 had lost in their immediate next round.

Well fed having success at wimbledon more is normal because grass is his favorite but his recent titles in AO is the big change as he now has 6 AO to 5 US. Federer lost this match due to mental issues but those were related to what the media was talking about. Media was going on about Del Potro's flatter and powerful forehand, and people were giving too much credit to those headlines. Federer wanted to show everyone his FH is the best and it was but he forced the issue too much. You can see him trying to go for FH to FH even though it compromised his position on the court. If you rewatch the match while knowing this, you'll see how much this was on Fed's mind.

I don't think they are saying than he gave the match to DelPo. I think the point is: "Okay, I have now 15 GS, finally got RG and my great WB, I'm 28, I'll probably play maybe for a long time, he is on his first GS ever final, I think I have too much advantage to take this". Also in that moment Nadal was 6GS, and having 12 or 14 in that years was like a crazy stuff, so in that moment Roger maybe was in comfort with his 15. With no injuries, Delpo has 5 GS, at least, multiple Masters 1000 titles, and gets to #1 at some point. Nadal and Djokovic's 3 GS years in 2010 and 2011 don't happen with a healthy Delpo in the fold.
