I often wonder how the ship came upon us since so many never stopped. I also remember photos take of us and would love to get my hands on those. I hope the Navy served you well and this event had a major impact on so many lives. Thank you.

@@RightHereInMyPocket I remember it like it was last week. I remember all of the ship's crew in the video. The guy starting the IV was a coworker and close friend. The guy with the red cross arm band also a coworker. I'll withhold their names. I was a little surprised that more of the Medical staff didn't appear in the video there was 10 of us. We played a huge part in all rescue mission and had daily contact for the full time the refugees were onboard as they were placed under our supervision sick or healthy. But hey we didn't do it for the glory.

Yes! I was there too! I remember seeing my dungarees on someone after we gave up our gear. I was also on the Oklahoma City with 7th Fleet when this all began. We worked 20 hours a day to monitor all the operations. So glad so many of you can find family in this video. It was our honor and blessing to help you.

As a member of 7th Fleet in the fall 1979 onboard the USS Oklahoma City, we had been working and coordinating the entire surveillance procedures for all navy ships and the P-3 Orion planes. We had 20-hour days in the admin office with the Chief of Staff's involvement to get all ships activities cleared. We kept up procedures when we transferred to the Blue Ridge. Then, in 1980, we finally made our rescue ops. The two boats are seen in the film. I remember clearly how the call went out for donations of clothes. I gave up a good pair of Levi jeans, which I later saw on one of the refugees. It was a very emotional time for us.

Dear Mr. Lopate. Thank you so much for sharing. I get emotional when I read your story because I, myself along with 117 other Vietnamese were rescued by the USS Long Beach in 1980. I clearly remember that day. Many soldiers donated their belongings for the refugees because our clothes were all torn. I remember that the pair of short I wore was ripped to the belt line exposing most of my buttock. One of the sailors, his name is Roscoe Cooper gave me a belt buckle which I kept until now . The day we left the ship, he ran up and tried to wave good bye. We both wept as the military truck pulled away. I never forget that moment. Please subscribe and share this post. Thank you.

1:38 It's a weird moment when he's smiling there as he describes the horrors of a Communist government, but then you realize exactly why he's smiling - he's smiling because, for the first time, he actually _can_ describe the horrors of a Communist government, without anyone censoring him or without fearing for his life or that of his family. ...Even though the things he's saying are horrible, he's still getting catharsis from the act of talking about them because he simply hasn't been allowed to before.
