USS Midway Flight Operations 1972 73

This video is from 8MM film taken during flight operations on the USS Midway (CV 41) in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1972-1973. It shows flight deck operations (flight preparation, launches and landings) and some in-flight footage from an EKA-3B (Tanker/EW) Skywarrior - AKA "Whale".

Things I remember when we had flight ops out in the Gulf of Tonkin were things like the heat, the loud noise, and the smells. Jet exhaust and later, perfume from all those bags of mail that they bought down in the hanger bay after the Easyway Airline landed. I'm glad I didn't work on the flight deck, for sure. Very dangerous work, especially at night.

I was on board in VA-115 for that cruise. A lot of memories.

My dad was stationed on the midway from 71 to 72 he was an aviation technician on the A-7s

I was aboard when this happened but down in our living quarters. I remember it well and it was horrible. A friend I went mess cooking with died in this accident. I was in VA-115. I got assigned to the flight deck just a month before this happened in September

Spent 6 months on CV-41 in Yokosuka in 1980 when VAQ-136 relieved VMAQ-2.

I was on it in 73 VMCJ1 Composite squadron we had F-4's and EA6B's WE were a Marine Squadron I enjoyed most of it

Beautiful video. I was a PC and then Flight Deck Troubleshooter for Rock River 71-74. I took Children and Gchildren back to the boat in SD and now I cant imagine how we did it. To all my Midway shipmates, airwing and ship. You guys were great! I am humbled to be your shipmate.

Hey shipmate, I was flight deck troubleshooter for the rock rivers 75-77. Best duty I ever had, dangerous but exciting. I worked nights. Nothing like watching the aircraft launch in complete darkness and then the afterburners would light up the ocean 😀. Not many have had the privilege of watching this happen in person 😀

OMG ... I may be in this film. The guys loading the bombs at the beginning of the film are guys I KNEW and partied with. I was LOX crew and then seat shop . VA-93 USS Midway 1972-1973

James D Jensen E6? Store keeper told me before he died he took video from deck of Midway. Would have been late 60's to mid 70's? Haven't seen video for a long time and no longer have it, did give a copy to a friend who said she could remaster it. Believe video at one time was in b/w,, also. Jim. Jensen said he wasn't supposed to take video. Any how I have many stories of the navy and his fun and crazy sense of humor to remember 🤣

I had friends in several other squadrons, including both the F-4 phantoms and also VA-56 and VAQ-130

Great video, thanks for preserving and sharing! Great video recorder btw, may I ask what model was it? Digitalizing is important as colors tend to fade away with age on film. Thanks, and please consider posting more!

was MM 3 in engine room, keeping the ship moving and running the wind over deck, when there was none,lol flight deck got the glory, but without us snipes , ship goes and does nothing , but then again, we were a team and the best team

I was working on the flight deck. one night took a walk down where you work. too hot for me.

You're correct, it took the whole team. I remember watching you snipes during an engine fire on the Ranger. Clean shaven so the obas would fit well and lining up to volunteer to go down in that engine room. Made be proud to be one of your shipmates. You guys didn't hesitate to do what was needed when called on.
