Footage aboard the USS Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin. Just a normal day, so you can see routine catapult launches and traps of various Navy aircraft among others ED-2 Hawkeyes, A-7D Corsairs, F-8 Crusaders. Take off is seen of S-3 Sea King helicopters.
This video has been used with the authorization of glewis.us/Orisk... where you can find this and other videos with the original effects and in the original format (uncut). This unique footage was made by Jerry Schulte during his tour on the Big 'O'.

My Dad, Captain Jack S. Kenyon. was the skipper of the Mighty O on her Westpac cruise in 1969. He always said, that as a fighter pilot, that was the highlight of his Naval career (Although, when I listened to him talk late in his life, I think that yanking and banking as the skipper of a fighter squadron was always his first love.) .In any case, he cherished his time aboard Oriskany. Later on, he was there when she was reefed. He shed a tear, but saluted her as she slipped beneath the waves. Dad rests at Arlington now, and I miss him more than I can say. That's all I've got to share.

Hats off to your dad!! That ship made lots and lots of West Pac cruises!! My squadron, an F4 Phantom squadron out of NAS Oceana, Va, VF-102, only made one West Pac, from May 31 of 68 for 6 months. First to go down, and taken pow until the darn end of the war was our C.O. ...It was a brutal, and totally unnecessary war for the U.S.

Very good music selection. I was on one of the last cruises on the Oriskany, in an A-3 squadron VAQ-130 we were called zappers and fuel replenishment aircraft. A-3s were the largest jet aircraft on any aircraft carrier. Oriskany was a magnificent ship, and I had a great time while I was on her.

To Warbird Factory, Jerry Schulte deserves the credit for taking the film. Gene Lewis deserves ALL the credit for re mastering. I came up with the selection of songs, Jerry would be gratified to know that his movie, is able to spark interest from those who served on Oriskany at that time, as well as others who didn't. Gene sent me your site, and it is very interesting. I personally appreciate you posting this video.. Thanks again! Best Regards Ron Thomas Oriskany 69-72

Great footage. My hometown is near Pensacola and I used to see these pilots in training and sometimes sold or gave them watermelons from our farm in the country. It was common to have crashed trainers all around the area farms. By 1972 I was in those waters too - but in a tin can bombing the shore by gunfire. Big O is a legend with some sad history too.

Lots of memories of air ops. F-8 Crusaders and A7 Corsairs were the Air Wing 19 combat aircraft. The flight deck is 2-1/2 acres of pure hell. Smells of sweat mixed with aircraft exhaust and JP-5 remain linger on today. Dodging rolling aircraft, keeping out of exhaust that will sweep you off your feet, huffers running about to start aircraft, bomb skids loaded with 500 and 1000 pounders keeps you on your toes. Yes,.....the videos give you a idea of what the air war onboard an aircraft carrier is like but to really know , you have to experience it. Thanks for this video.

I was there. I left RVN in May, went to AO-A school then joined VA-155. They stuck me on Cag Arm/De-arm crew. I was off during the recovery when John Glenn's F-8P hit the round down and splashed into the gulf. I was in the hanger bay, coming back from chow, when I heard the strike, the grinding, the ejection, then watched as the plane exited the flight deck and hit the water right in front of me. Then there was the pilot, one swing and he hit the water, I ran for the flight deck and got to help in the FOD walk down... Hell of a vacation after a year in RVN.

A great ship with a GREAT crew(s). I'd urge anyone interested in the O boat's Vietnam history to read Zalin Grant's Over the Beach. I still have an autographed picture by Dick Bellinger from just after his Mig kill. FYI Pieces and parts of the Oriskany still live on aboard the USS Hornet in Alameda. Before she was towed to the Gulf of Mexico (and sunk) she was in Hunter's Point being stripped. Some of that gear was used in the restoration of the Hornet, another Essex class ship.

I am thinking of attending the reunion in Baton Rouge this year and taking my camera. I surely hope that it is well attended especially with shipmates from my cruise. If I get enough stories, I will post them on youtube.

@xTomcatsForeverVF84x That's an E-1 Tracer, the predecessor to the E-2 Hawkeye. Many of the old 27-C carriers of the Vietnam era used the older aircraft types, as they were better suited for operations on these smaller carriers.

Oh yes! They used to fly over the turning point at CHUMUCKLA cotton gin and our nearby farm. PLUS .. dad used to be a 1clpo working on the T28's there before he got his ADJ chief rating and went to Pcola. Since our family is local "pioneers" he was raised there on a farm and in 1938 helped with the surveys to lay out Whiting. Go navy.

@sutonchef There was a Capt. Stanton. I had 28 thousand crew in this task force, small office and nice private deck, port side amid ship with blue paint and stars on the floor. Was that your brother. Fair winds and same seas. And God Bless your Brother.

Yeah by early 70s almost all A-4s had been pulled of carriers, I am not even sure if Marine A-4s went back aboard ships after Vietnam even though they were retired in the 1990s. I could be wrong... Then again, A-3s and S-2s routinely launched off the small Essex ships. But I do not think they were ever fully loaded.
