Welcome back to The Deco Stop! I am so happy you have found my channel and even more excited if you are a returning subscriber! This channel is all about SCUBA diving from Beginner all the way through Technical diving where I will explore awesome dive sites around Florida and the WORLD! Hopefully, with some of you soon as I plan local and abroad group trips. Hope you're ready for an epic video, on this episode I am finishing my TDI Technical Diving certification, also known as Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures with my buddy Chris through Below 130 Diving (link below). Barry Shively is our instructor and one of the best when it comes to decompression diving. This last and final dive in on the USS Oriskany, an Essex class Naval Aircraft Carrier that was purposely sunk in the Gulf of Mexico outside the Pensacola Pass to become the largest artificial reef off of the United States Coast Line. Come along and we will take you down to 150 feet to see what is lurking at those depths.

Great video. Love the commentary on top of the video. I got my TDI Advanced Trimix Diver certification in 1998 - have fun on your continuing diving education and hope you get in to the world of mixed gases and technical diving. I trained, certified and dove in the Pacific Northwest. Waters in the 40's, "good" visibility was anything over 20' - all in full drysuits, 100lb. wings, stainless backplates with home-made harnesses. Twin LP steel 120's (beasts), dual cross over manifolds, and ScubaPro regulators with a 10' main hose. We were in constant touch with the FL cave divers and the DIY guys in getting this all figured out. They all thought we were nuts for cold water diving. PS. I SO would have used the ascent reel and lift back to float up that anchor at 10:16....besides, your buddy should have a line and float for you to use (as you found out). And yes, I've done exactly what you've done - launched my ascent bag and reel and watched it go away only to have to scrum over to my buddy and politely ask if I can borrow his ascent line for the multi-hour deco.

Thank you! And thank you for blazing the trail into what technical diving is today. I have been doing a lot of reading and the doing these deep dives in the 90’s must have been intense! I was so thinking of floating that anchor up but figured my instructor would not be too happy, lol. As for the Pacific NW, that’s where I grew up. Oregon specifically, I should go back up there and do some dives around there.

That’s awesome and thank you for watching it!! You are so correct, diving it as a tech diver is the only way to dive the Oriskany. I dove it last year recreationally and the whole time I wished I was tech certified, that was probably the dive that convinced me to get my AN/DP certification.

Very cool video. Thanks for sharing your journey and also being open about it. It would have been easy to cut out the runaway SMB, but I've had that happen during my technical training also, and it was refreshing to see a diver being honest about those issues that happen and a good lesson in not taking the risk of ascending (or in some cases, descending) to chase equipment. Thanks again for sharing.

I think I'm the complete opposite :D , after reading some books i want to go from open water to re-breather tech ASAP ! , My country isn't well known for cave diving so ill probably have to travel to Florida to get certed and then come back to break some new ground . I like the longer videos ! but i don't know if that's everyone's cup of tea .
@TheDeco_Stop

The longer videos are kind of hit or miss, some people like them and some won’t even click on the video if they see it’s over 10 minutes. I have an instructor here that takes his students to the Dominican Republic for their cave certification. He said the caves are massive there and makes for a good first couple cave dives.

The videos from barry sheiling you mentions are they on youtube? cant find them. Really nice video. i took my OW certefication last weekend and am taking my AOW next weekend, but my big plans are to go for CCR tecnical diving both for the gas cost for deeper dives but the possibility if staying down longer without carrying like 6 tanks talk to me. Unfortually im not as blessed with good visibility, Here in the baltic see outside of stockholm sweden we can be happy if we see more than 4 meters during summer that is about 13 feet visibility maximum. but nice video cant wait for my next dive
