USS Saratoga in Deep Space...

A mysterious repeating beacon is detected by Starfleet Command, and the USS Saratoga, a Miranda class vessel, is ordered to investigate ..
This iconic starship class was first featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn as the USS Reliant. Originally, this was intended to just be a set of updated flyby shots of a Star Trek model I made back in 2005, but after I put some sound and music to it, I thought I might use it as a possible prelude to a short story arc.
Regarding the model, I originally created it using Maya's NURBS modeling toolset, and its now been converted to polygons, the UVs redone, and retextured using Substance Painter. For animation, lighting, and rendering, I used Unreal Engine 5.
There's an very old image from when I had just finished the modeling work, you can see it in my old (and now abandoned) Renderosity gallery here:

From the first sound of the retro computer beeping and buzzing, I thought Alien. Then the James Horner music started... I guess "somewhere in space" was less of a give away than Zeta Reticuli.

James Horner was the composer same on Wrath of Khan as Aliens. He stepped in for Aliens later in production and had next to no time to create the score, which is why he reworked the existing WoK theme, fitting both perfectly.

Well that is well and good, but if by "deep space" they meant out beyond our galaxy, then they shouldn't have sent one to investigate. Mirandas do have a lot of very good sensor systems. But, they are made for relatively short journeys. They don't have a lot of manufacturing facilities to engineer replacement parts, they are not designed to travel beyond warp six, they don't have a lot of supply room, etc.
@FunkThompson

@@TheNoiseySpectator I don't think anything in Trek is referencing "outside of our Galaxy" until you get to the weird stuff with The Travelers and whatnot. "Deep Space Vessels" of the Federation don't leave the Galaxy, they don't even leave the Alpha Quadrant, generally :D

I agree with you. It really works. The music when Enterprise lowers the Reliant's shields right before the "Here it comes..." line is exactly the same dramatic crescendo in Aliens when the nuke goes off and they escape. Love it in both. Horner was great!

I remember as a kid playing the FASA Star Trek RPG. My friend was the DM and concocted an Aliens/Star Trek crossover campaign and our ship, amusingly, was a “Reliant Class” ship. (Back in the 80s the name “Miranda Class” hadn’t been created yet.). The story was terrible because we were 12, but it was fun to play through a scenario where xenomorphs were loose on a Federation starship. As I recall my friend even wrote up stats for a xenomorph ship that we had to fight. Again, terrible, but a fun memory.

I must compliment you on this. As a life long Trek fan and lover of isolation space horror, it's almost non existent for the two to cross paths. The selection from the Alien suite works well. A lot of fan produced work drops the ball on music selection and editing, but this works. Ironically, Trek and Aliens almost had a crossover several years ago as a 4 issue comic called Star Trek TNG Acceptable Losses. Unfortunately, it was cancelled, but preliminary designs and some completed covers can be found online.

with advanced starfleet tech like transporters, advanced scanners, forcefields, etc it would be a cinch to identify xenomorphs inside human hosts and remove them. locating xenomorphs would also be a cinch. isolate them up the gravity plate to 20 x and crush them. or use phasers and ... vaporize them. tricorders would work wonders. the transporters alone would have bio scanners that detect infestation and separte the parasites from teh human during transport.

The Miranda was not exactly a “ push over” many were quite well armed in fact they were better armed then the constitution class in many cases. A Miranda was well suited for the type of early exploratory work Starfleet was doing. For the most part during peacetime cruisers and destroyers are the most well used ships in modern navies as they’re the most well rounded ones. Starfleet science vessels tend to be shorter ranged and underarmed ( reference the Oberth and Nova class). Constitution class heavy cruisers and Miranda class cruisers are pretty much the backbone of pre excelsior class Starfleet. Also at this time the constellation class is not yet built ( with their quad nacelle configuration and design well suited for long range the constellation class eventually took on long range exploration from the usual Starfleet ships)

I do like this model the best in almost 60 years of Star Trek. The Saratoga, Miranda, Reliant model of 1982 was the most anesthetic and functional to me. Two shuttle bays, no mostly empty stardrive section, a modular warp core than can be ejected.
@Novusod
@Novusod Жыл бұрын
The Reliant model from 1982 was actually upside down. The warp nacelles were supposed to be on the top of the ship. When the model was accidentally placed on the producers desk it was set upside down and nobody told him until later. So when filming began the producer insisted that the model be shot with the nacelles down. That is how the Reliant was created as kind of an accident.
@STho205
@STho205 Жыл бұрын
@@Novusod it is obviously supposed to be evocative of the Romulan cruiser in 1966...as the battles were similar to Balance...even dissapearing in a nebula instead of a comet tail. The Romulan cells were up. The original script for Balance said the ship was of Earth design (spies) as they were to use the repainted saucer section from the 3' Enterprise model with a torpedo launcher tube on the dorsal or ventral hull (no warp cells, thus Scotty's line) After principle live action photography, they were able to get a unique model built by their prop guy...and they reworked the live action footage dialog to match (almost) with serious editing.
@STho205
@STho205 Жыл бұрын
@@Novusod you know I never bought that upside down story, since the model is an Enterprise saucer and it obviously had a top dome long established by 1982. @Novusod
