Not True! Canada have 650000 hockey players today! Russia have only under 100000 hockey players today! Soccer have 250 million players vs Canada 650000 players that means The Soccer All Stars would beat Orr Gretzky Lemieux easily 100 game Series 93-7! Cricket have 2,5 billion fans around the world! Only hockey player ever had fans was Russian Kharlamov 225 million fans in Former Soviet Union!

the telecast of game four on you tube was such a horrible blur,it was impossible to see the puck, the game was unwatchable, but this telecast of game five was much, much, better, you can see the puck easily, and its a joy to watch.even with the problems of transmissions from moscow it was still a million times better than the vancouver telecast.

I like the rye bread gesture from the soviet girl. Now has it been a russian guy, he would have given the canadian player smirnoff vodka, which we can all get here too!!

Well, at least the Soviet goalie looks small. Tony Esposito has a huge gut.

why is the pa man saying icing and offside in a hockey wise country like russia?

I was at a game in Johanneshov stadium in Stockholm Sweden. The PA guy only called penalties, Goals, and offsides and icing. This was also in the early 70s.

It's still common for icing and offsides to be announced in most of Europe. I go to games fairly frequently in the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany (plus the various levels of the World Championships) and they all make the announcement.

The Canadians shit the bed in the last 10 minutes, but the first 50 minutes of the game were the best hockey they played in the entire 8 games. Even though they lost the game, they came out of it knowing they had a better team. I think the Soviets realized that too. I think they went into panic mode and rigged the officiating with Kompala. It almost worked, but even with rigged officiating the Soviets could not match the talent and intensity of the Canadians.

Lawrence Wright - Immediately after this game, Red Berenson burst into the Canadian dressing room & told everyone that the Soviets were beatable. Even though Team Canada had lost this game & had its back to the wall (they could lose no more games if they wanted to take the series), he just knew the Soviets could be beaten. That was a great demonstration of faith in Team Canada - and well justified, as it turned out.

Webly Pug Berenson played with Belleville McFarlands in 1959. He was one of the few Canadian players who had experience playing the Soviets. Sinden had also played against them.

I agree they had become a team they had found their legs and whats really important they were getting better. Yes the ussr came storming back at the end that is what they can do but they id know then if they didnt know before they woke up a sleeping giant.

@@408Magenta really here we go again? just cant give credit where its due. There is always luck in sport to a degree it is a game of inches...and what dodgy officiating?.....you mean Kampala if so yes plus the linesmen over there called so many two line passes that were not and offsides on canada one would have thought they d never seen a hockey game before. In addition the support of the 3000 canadians there helped greatly. I think CHERRY was right when he said we sure like to eat our own in this country. Were you even born when this series was played?

Kael 7777,what are you 10 years old, its people like you that spread hatred instead of love. first of all you dont own shit, now your better at hockey than the russians yes,but then in the 70s and into the 80s the russians were better and more exciting than you. you only won 72 through unsportsmanlike play and luck, and you were killed in 74.

Ben, in '72, Canada couldn't ice Bobby Orr, who four years later in The '76 Canada Cup won MVP, nor several others among The NHL's top 20 players, like Jacques Lemaire. In '74, The WHL - not NHL - played Russians with old-timers like Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe, who finished one, two in scoring against Russia. If NHL and WHL had united for these Series, obviously Canada would've won both Series easily. Nonetheless, Russia played awesomely. At least, Ben, no longer was Canada allowing Russia to claim trophies for so many years against our amateur teams! Oh, Ben, about love 'n hate? Don't be a pussy.

Kael, we're now provin' it more than ever! These past few years, Canada's so talent-rich, we could've beaten 'em with our second team.
