A good fire starter is an essential survival gear item. The UST Blast Match is a fire steel or ferrocerium rod that can be operated one-handed in case you are injured. But does it really work? Let's see.

hi Brian, hello from Scotland, i found your channel while looking for fire starters, loved the way you mentioned good reason for having a one handed striker i.e. if injured etc, i had a stroke 6yrs ago and am getting into survival camping as a focus to aid in my recovery. liked vid and subbed to channel.

Bryan you did a great job of demonstrating the fire tool I don't remember you saying that it was better than a Bic lighter or anything else. You simply showed how the thing worked and left it up to us to decide if it's something we could use in our fire making arsenal. Hats off to you pal. God Bless.

I was a pilot in the air force. Beginning in probably 1986 or so, our survival kits included a blast match. I think they're excellent, and I used it frequently while living in the Alaskan bush. At -30f or colder, lighters and matches refuse to work. Other methods become difficult as you lose dexterity. But the blast match works great.

Great job as usual, Brian! Excellent point in thinking ahead if for some reason anyone may not have the ability to use both hands in starting a fire, etc. or the fact that not everyone is born with both hands for that matter. I’ve brought this fact up before & find myself trying to do things one-handed, using a non-dominant hand for things, legs, & even my mouth for some things. Turns out I’m just kinda weird & quirky, I’m kinda smart. Lol. Ya, just never know, ya know?

Using the *BlastMatch* _VERTICALLY_ will work far more efficiently than doing things at that weird & awkward angle he kept using (I suppose to help with filming.) A straight-on push sends sparks RIGHT INTO your tinder. Another great tinder - a homemade one you can carry in very small & waterproof containers - is cotton balls smeared with vaseline. Cheap, and not only *HIGHLY flammable* but also has *a VERY long-lasting burn time!*

Thanks Brian! I've seen this one recently and considered buying one. I can use a striker well enough if it is large enough but not the little ones. With only one good hand already such problems are always a consideration with my gear. Not sure I can use this striker off hand though. So now this is on my list of things to buy. I've several special knives to accommodate also. The favorite with Schrade - SCHF13 and it's little brother SCHF13SM a perfect fit. Considering use of hands in knot tying I do well although again what if one hand is injured. So I just made two nylon straps to go around a tree with a loop at each end. Pass one end through a loop and use the other to clip a Figure 9 Carabiner. Also makes it easier for any who have little experience tying knots. Certainly much faster! A set of Nite Ize CamJam's and two more straps next. Thanks for bringing attention to survival with limited use of hands. Something not considered often enough.

Consider a figure 9 carabiner or CamJam used as a tourniquet. Might hath to place or stuff a glove, stick or anything at the pressure point but I think it will work in a worse case scenario.

Survival On Purpose Bryan, here in western Pennsylvania around Pittsburgh, we have a unique dialect and vocabulary. A lot of locals to East Brady, where I live, add the phrase “so it is, or so I am” to there sentences. Like, I’m goin down to the store so I am, or that’s a nice watch so it is. It’s an odd local thing, but it’s a trademark of our area. So is saying yinz instead of y’all.

This is pretty cool, and for those who are about to say "just carry a lighter" my reply is "What are you going to do if it gets wet?"... You could soak this thing and it will still light a fire, especially if you've got wetfire. On the one handed note... Practice with your off hand as well. No matter which "handed" you are, the vast majority of injuries are going to occur to your primary hand because you're using it for just about everything, while your off hand is going to be nice and injury free. But if you haven't practiced your skills one handed with that hand too... you're still screwed. Trust me on this, I speak from experience. Last year in the Fall I had a saw kick back on me and it tore my right hand up. I'm one of the lucky ones in that I am truly ambidextrous, however due to just about everything on the planet being designed for right handed people I get a lot more practice time using my right hand and have, over the years, developed a bias towards using that hand more. Since the saw was right hand designed that's the one that got hurt. I had to switch to doing nearly everything with my left hand for months on end and it drove this lesson home to me in a very direct way, "Use your OTHER hand too!" It took me a few days to get my left hand functioning fully again after probably a decade of not using it very much but I have to imagine someone who is right handed and primarily uses only that hand for most things who is not ambidextrous is going have a much longer learning curve to deal with. Thanks Bryan for another good video on what looks like a really good product.

Might take a peek at a Clipper lighter. The striker and flint pull straight out on a long post right out of the top. Makes it easy to use as a flint striker in it's own unit if the fluid has run out. They refill and the flint is easy to replace. One can keep a small fluid refill and flint case with the vehicle or pack. Not against Bic's at all and that is what I still have but I will be switching to Clipper lighters. Pick up 6 various colors including clear for $8.50.

I still think lighters are pretty useful. I've been a smoker for years.. I have lighters that are still kicking and they're like 5 years old. For the cost of one of these things you can get a whole lot of lighters. It's easy to lose your firestarter so it doesn't hurt to have several kinds. Besides I don't think people compare lighters to ferro rods fairly. Ferro rods require several tries to get a fire going and people compare those tries to an actual fire. If you got tinder ready you only need to make that lighter push out fuel for a couple seconds. Smokers know, It will take as long as 6months to use up a lighter. And we're making the equivalent of 10-15 fires a day! We're not even trying to conserve the thing, it just last a long time! In a survival situation if you have say, 7 lighters, I'd be willing to be you will be good for as long as a decade.

I see a lot of folks posting that a lighter is the best. But, to me survival is more than just carry a Bic with you. You need more trhan one type of fire starter than what is considered the easiest implement. A lighter, ferro rod(or the different ferro devices), waterproof matches, different tinders, and if you are able to make fire the old way is a must.One is none and two is one. I carry three.

Hey just to let you know I had one of these since they pretty much came out and I never really used it as I found it a gimmick and then with all the rave and reviews I decided to try using it and I took it out and noticed grey dust all over it. I've probably had it stored for 10 plus years and I noticed it doesn't function it appears it disintegrated and no longer functions. I'm not sure if they make them different and I have been in contact with the company who was happy to offer me a replacement if I took photo / video of it but I no longer trust it putting it in a kit in case of emergency. I just figured I'd let you know don't count your life on it when it's needed.

I guess the tension on the spring went over time and rusted it and wore down the other end of the rod causing it to break down how they have that black coating on them to prevent it I guess the spring wore through it on the back end when it rusted out. This was in the waterproof ust plastic kit kind of like the OtterBox containers and I always carried it out hiking with me in case of emergency but now I know I won't trust myself to it I rather use the USAF sparkie wheel for one handed sparking

Funny thing is that this is how firesteels should have been made all along. The setup now is VERY cumbersome -- especially if you attempt to use the back of a knife. This seems like the "obvious" way to make and use a firesteel.

Except it has more potential for something to break or go wrong. I'd say keep practicing because it is hard to beat the simplicity of a basic ferro rod. And i like this one

@@SurvivalOnPurpose Well...that's not really a well thought out response (although I certainly agree that one should practice with steel and knife -- because it's often VERY tricky to do it without practice). To say "it could break" amounts to saying you should never use anything mechanical, because it might break. I'll continue practicing "the hard way," but I'll use and carry the Blast Match (and, indeed, some "super-matches" and a butane lighter) because it makes sense. You can always strip away the excess mechanical workings of the blast match and have a steel and knife left over.

That's a cool product but it's just not as practical as a lighter, when shtf happens and one of my hands is injured and I need a fire, I'm not gonna be worried about keeping it authentic, I'm gonna pull out a lighter and start a fire 💯🔥

Any way you can get a fire is "authentic" enough for me

I want to see you re-do this video with one arm in a sling. Oh, and it has to be your right arm and all your equipment is in a backpack, on your back. :-)

This video was not about me trying to show my one-handed abilities. It was a simple demo of the product. Although I do think your idea has merit.

Nice Video, but this Firestarter is absolutly Fail. The best Thing what you can do with this is put them in the Trashcan =) Best regards from Germany

Not real impressed with the plastic lighter. Seems like it wouldn't last a long time being the chincy plastic body. Also you had some difficulty starting a fire UNTIL you used the various fire starter elements that you used. You should have used just some regular dry grass or other common fire starting elements.

I'm stating the obvious..but using two hands to demonstrate a one handed fire making technique kinda defeats the purpose. I like UST products. I just wouldn't trust a fire starting device dependant on a flimsy spring mechanism for it to work.
@SurvivalOnPurpose

I know. It is easy to forget. you should try it some time and video yourself so you can go back and see if you used your other hand at all. And, if the spring screws up you still have a pretty good ferro rod

It's a toy. It's a novelty. It has too many moving parts that can and will fail. Springs and plastic and whatever else holds it together. You would trust your life to that? If that's all you are going to carry, you better stay home.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't say I'd trust my life to it but I do think it could be a useful item as a backup. Don't forget that if all the springs and plastic fail you still have a pretty robust ferro rod.

Brian, you DID NOT say you would trust your life to it. If I made that insinuation I do apologize. A survival situation in real time COULD be catastrophic. In MY opinion, something more reliable and time tested would be more preferable for me.

Who said that's all they are going to carry? Quit being a negative Nancy/KZfaq expert. Diversity is key, even if it "broke" you have about a 3/8s inch Ferro rod, which is tried and trued

They didn’t sponsor or support that video. And I was not “promoting” it. Just demonstrating it for those interested. And it seemed to work as intended, even if it is definitely “plasticy”.

Cheap Chinese duplicate. What happened to the original made out of metal. When I struck it, it fanned out in all directions for at least 5 to 6 feet. When did they start making it out of cheap plastic. What's going on with this country????
