Anjanbabu, thank you for sharing these precious memories. Apparently the cross-talk between the families of Enayat Khan and Hafiz Ali Khan extended even to Amjad Ali Khan whose early recordings had (as aficionados say) a clear impact of the Vilayatkhani gayaki ang. There was a famous dispute at some point and apparently, this led Amjad Ali Khan to depart from this style and this can be clearly picked up in the remarkable difference between his recordings from the ~pre1980's era and the ones in the 90's.

It really is magic, I just do NOT GET the people who say "there's no good music." I mean, not only are there great people in all genres right now, you also can access EVERY SINGLE HISTORICAL ERA recorded. You have to WANT TO listen to bad music.

I think his son Ustad Shujaat Khan plays it even better than him. And Shujaat often sings as well while playing the sitar, giving a different dimension to the whole thing. This is my own thought. You check it for yourself :)

​@@eedebanjan1 Beg to differ as Shujaat saheb does not have even 10% of range and the deft touch that Ustad Vilayat Khan did. The singing he does is actually distracting and is mainly aimed to make up for the deficiencies in the Sitar playing (but doesn't). Ustad Shahid Parvez still has more prowess, musicality ( _rooh daari_ ), and finesse than Mr Shujaat.

+tinderhorn In other news, Vilayat Khan recorded a few versions of this particular interpretation of Rag Khamaj, which he sometimes called a "Ragamalika, based on Khamaj" and sometimes as "Khamaj". Either way, it's certainly one of my favourite interpretations of the raga. The ideas he comes up with are fascinating and incredibly inventive. He has a playful feeling for Khamaj which acts as a wonderful counterbalance to someone like Nikhil Banerjee, for example, who plays Khamaj with heartbreaking tenderness.

Ayub Sahib: Great to have found you here. If you could recall, in the 70s I met you along with Naveed Asghar from Manchester - we were then doing PhDs at Salford University. Naveed and his parents were most likely your family friends. You lived around London, where we also had the opportunity of meeting with your father-in-law Ustad Allah Rakha Sahib marhoom . While I was in London in 1979, I also attended a concert of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Zakir Hussain - your family also came there (of course). Then in 1983 I visited the American Embassy for my US visa where I again met you and we conversed on music & your poetry. In the late 80's Ustad Allah Rakha Sahib, and Zahkir and Sultan Khan sahibaan came to Minneapolis for a concert and I met them -- I did mention to them about you. I sincerely hope you and your family is doing fine. There is a real old recording of Vilayat Khan Sahib on KZfaq. If you go to KZfaq and type 'Film about Music in India in the 1940's -- Film 246', you will see the recording ... a real real treasure. Salaam and best regards! Javed Bhatty Chicago

Was this concert between Ali Akbar Khan and Zakir Hussain at The Bhavan Centre. And Ali Akbar Khan played Raags Chandranandan and a ragmala in Pilu. Plese reply and correct me if i am wrong. I went to this concert

It is close to the khamaj rag. Based on the family of khamaj ragas.

This concert was in Berlin Meta Music Festival 1974 and I was accompanying Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahab. The festival arranged by Mr Walter Bachwar.

Dear Pandit Chaterjee, Thank you for clarifying that you are the accompanist. I, like so many people get really fed up when accompanying artists are not even mentioned on so many youtube offerings. In my opinion that is not acceptable and people should no better, all you musicians are all great in your won right and deserve being named.

I am feeling myself fortunate that I am being able to talk with one of the great musicians hearing in this recording- Pandit Sankha Chatterjee. Panditji, it will be great treasure for us if you kindly share some experience of playing with Ustad Vilayat Khan, if possible some memory of this particular programme.
