this is one of the things that always bugged me. arthur is set in Wales yet when it is put as books, tv series or movies it's set in England. I can never understand why.
@lukecommins10963 жыл бұрын
Native Romano-Celtic peoples fled to Wales after the invasion of the Angles and Saxons. Since Arthur is supposed to have held them back for a time before his death, he is appreciated more in Welsh history and literature rather than the Anglo-Saxon literature. (Red and White Dragons in stories of Merlin) The change comes with the first Tudor monarch Henry VII, who was a Welsh native. His son, Henry VIII looked to King Arthur the same way Alexander the Great looked to Achilles, as a model to follow and replicate. Le Mort De Arthur is compiled sometime after this as a result, enshrining the Romano-Celtic hero Arthur as a symbol of idealized royal power in the British Isles.
@NotoriousEKB2 жыл бұрын
@@lukecommins1096 I believe Gregory of Monmouth meddled with the Welsh tales long before Henry VII. I enjoy the many versions of Arthur, but the original Welsh creation provides a lot more insight into Celtic Britain and pre-Saxon literary tropes than the later Christianised versions.
@lukecommins10962 жыл бұрын
@@NotoriousEKB I do agree that the Celtic version is a closer look at the original Arthur but without the Christianisation and medieval support for the growing stories, Arthur would be just as unknown as other Welsh and Irish folk heroes. Only when Arthur becomes integral to the identity of Britain (not the Britons) do those stories gain the traction for immortality.

Freaking amazing story telling skills. I think this is the “legend” we were made to read in Junior High literature before doing the Arthurian legends in high school. Was so disappointed freshman literature and dark age “history” in college to hear professors claim Uther and Arthur as well as all of the people in the stories were amalgamations or pure fiction. All with no proof either was. So i choose to hold onto the dream and legend.

Could you learn to write? I can't read this because it's so incoherent. No proof of what? That Arthur wasn't real? Yes there is! We know that most of the stuff in the legends was made up. An all England was only first spoken of much later at the time of King Alfred then finally achieved by his grandson Althelstan. The years leading up to all England(Angland) was due to the invasion of the Angles and the Saxons from Germany. Thus the fictional King Arthur story, would have been set around the 5th or 6th century after the Romans left Breton and the Angles and Saxons invaded. Arthur would have fought the English(the Angles and Saxons). King Arthur, legend would have been the King of Breton or Bretonic Kingdom which was the whole of land the became known as England combined with Wales combined, but was reduced to area of Wales.

0:05 '...where the Roman conqueror's had been driven out of the _United Kingdom_ .' sorry, the what? the land is called '[Great] Britain' (or 'Britannia' as the Romans called their province) as that is the name of the island (not referring to the name of a modern country). anyway, the Romans weren't 'driven out' as if someone won a decisive battle over them and forced them from the island. Many Roman soldiers were called back by Stilicho in 402 and 405 (he also left the Rhine frontier dangerously depleted of soldiers against the Germans). In 406, what Roman army remained in Britain revolted, electing three successive "tyrants", the last of whom took further troops to Gaul. By 410 noone from what was left of the Roman administration on the continent cared about the troops in Britannia anymore and none remained thereafter. what remained were Roman landowners with their Roman culture and the person we now consider the most likely to be 'King Arthur' was Ambrosius Aurelianus. the name says it all.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a great adventure took place..... On a planet called Tatooine, there was a slave boy named Annakin. The boy met a jedi knight. The jedi knight noticed that Annakin was no ordinary boy. The jedi knight took Annakin to the council of Jedi Knights who at first rejected Annakin. Eventually, Annakin was trained as a jedi and he became quite a warrior. However, Annakin fell under the spell of a sith lord masquerading first as a Senator, who then became Emperor. The sith lord conspired with Annakin, who himself had become a dark lord ( Darth Vader) to hunt down and exterminate all of the jedi knights (they weren't 100% effective-a couple got away. While he was still Annakin, Vader had romanced and married a Queen (Amidala). Amidala gave birth to a pair of twins, then she died in child birth. The twins were seperated and raised by families on different planets, not knowing who their father was. One of the twins, Luke (who lived on Tatooine) met a jedi knight named Obi Wan Kenobi. Obi Wan had been called by Luke's sister to participate in a rebellion against the emperor. While on the way to the rebellion, Obi Wan trained Luke in the ways of the force (an internal and external power that helps the jedi to combat evil). Luke, Obi Wan, and a smuggler named Han Solo end up on a space station called The Death Star (which could destroy entire planets). There the trio rescued Luke's sister (Leia), but Obi Wan sacrificed himself so that the new trio could get away. Luke later destroyed the Death Star by using the force. The new trio then went tbrough a series of adventures before ending the reign of the emperor and Luke ended up carrying his mortally wounded father from a new death star before it too was destroyed by Han and Wedge (an old friend of Luke). Luke eventually trained his sister on the ways of the force, but not before failing to create a new order of the jedi. Luke went into seclusion to punish himself for failing. In the meantime, Leia and Han conceived a son named Kylo Ren. Kylo started learning the ways of the force, but he fell under the spell of the dark side and he promised to continue the work of his long dead grandfather. On another planet, there was a girl named Rey. Without any training, Rey found herself learning the ways of the force and after meeting Han, she was taken to a planet where she was given a light saber that had once belonged to Luke. Soon after, Kylo killed his father. This drew Rey into combat with Kylo. Kylo was amazed that Rey's powers were as strong, if not stronger than his. Soon after, Rey gave Luke's light saber to Luke-who promptly threw it into the ocean. Rey ended up training herself into the art of using the light saber as well as a jedi. Emperor Palpatine, thought dead since the first death star blew up somehow ressurected himself. He had been controlling Kylo for a long time and from quite a distance. Palpatine knew that "balance" would be restored to the force if the combined powers of Rey and Kylo were to strike him down, but Palpatine failed to realize that generations of Jedis had given Rey her powers. Still, while combating Kylo near Palpatine, Rey was briefly killed. However, a grief stricken Kylo gave Rey his life force (therefore redeeming himself) before evaporating as some jedi masters had done. Rey ended the horror of Palpatine while her associates defeated the "First Order" (who had briefly run the galactic republic). The war won, the sith defeated, Rey took both Luke and Leia's light sabers and buried them in the sand next to the home Luke grew up in on Tatooine. Fin
