Parallel Session 57, Bio-based concepts inspiring the spatial structures and architecture of the next generation (WG 12)
Xan Browne, Olga Popovic Larsen and Caio Castriotto (Royal Danish Academy & University of Campinas) present their work on timber waste.
This project challenges the current wasteful practice of timber and sets out to holistically investigate the potential of waste wood as a structural material using Reciprocal Frame systems. The inhabitable canopy as a full-scale demonstrator evolves through three main phases: design, fabrication, and assembly, the project is guided by a multi-objective optimisation approach. Balancing structural performance, aesthetics, and buildability as single objectives together defining the holistic assessment within each stage of development. Through physical probes at many scales and the application of digital tools for exploring many facets of the design, fabrication and construction process, the project challenges our current perception of ‘defect’, inquiring into how the inherited material traits can be active agents in the creation of high-quality design. The paper concludes with summaries of each objective and a discussion of how this project fits within the landscape of potential avenues for exploring waste wood as a structural material.
