The fact that Majka dropped after first attacks, was allowed to return back and then went to the front for a minute does not make this a lead-out. Pogacar would have smoked the field had he decided to go full gas after Majka dropped. Showed some restraint and smart riding (at last).

The guys in Eurosport studio talked about this at length, including one of EF sport directors (an American gentleman, forgot his name unfortunately). He said it’s a race in the end, Pog likes winning and that, as you pointed out, a stage win prize money is a way to thank your fellow riders. Plus UAE did that with relative ease today (considering tomorrow’s stage and a rest day after that).

Complete control. Got a bunch of rivals to pull him to the line. They probably were waiting for pogi to get greedy and attack with 3-4 km and to draft off him (which would be a feat in itself). But pogi just sat still until it all winds down toward a sprint, and some had to try and go.

To me, there is no way Pogacar could keep responding to the many attacks in the last 5 and still have gas to blow away the sprint to the finish.

If you want to see him crumble, watch stage 11 Tour de France 2022. Roglic and Vingegaard broke Tadej quite spectacularly. He is a better rider now and, most importantly, the guys here are two tiers worse riders than Jonas and Primoz. Plus these were half hearted attacks at best…speculative would be the word.

Pogačar "Strawberry Fields Forever". This is not the Algarve. Felipe Martínez thought that he was going to attack Remco. If it were not for Antonio Tiberi there would be nothing to say about the stage. He was moved by the anecdote. Bad idea to put a high mountain stage after the time trial, there was more to lose than gain.

his vo2max is reportedly at 89.4, but more importantly, according to the UAE team doc, it seems like pog doesn't get the same lactate buildup in his muscles as other riders. his body clears out lactate faster and he burns fat as opposed to glucose for longer. this also explains why he can still kick so hard after a long, arduous stage, because his glycogen reserves (which are needed for short hard efforts) aren't even being touched all day long.

jonas vingegaard for example has a much higher vo2max, apparently he reached the second highest ever measured across athletes of all sports, however vo2max isn't an exact science and shorter tests often provide higher values than longer ones
