Thanks for the great content as always. I have a question. While I understand the importance of familiarity for users, leading to similar interfaces, I also believe there's value in considering alternative approaches. I find myself hesitant to try something new, fearing that there must be a reason why it hasn't been done before. This mindset can hinder progressive thinking and the opportunity for innovative solutions. It seems designers often benchmark from established sources, potentially limiting creativity. This may be due to a belief in the reliability of well-tested solutions. For those starting out, there might be a tendency to stick with safe options rather than exploring more creative ones, despite brainstorming efforts. What are your thoughts on the balance between familiarity and innovation in interface design, and how can we avoid falling into the trap of always choosing safe options or benchmarking from established sources?

Amazing question, and here's my take. There are primarily two layers of innovation that we can create as designers. First, in product design. I'd argue that creativity and breakthroughs are a must. If you're working on a new product, you have to clearly distinguish it from your competitors. Even when you're bringing an existing product to a new market, you still have to iterate on the product design to make it fit that market. For example, when Uber expanded to India, the ordering options expanded beyond cars to include motorcycles and tuk-tuks. Second, in UI design. Here too, creativity and breakthroughs are essential to clearly distinguish your brand style from competitors. For instance, if Amazon uses yellow, and you're building a new e-commerce product, I'd avoid using yellow. However, one area that might not need as much innovation is component design. Usually, the setup for buttons, cards, and tabs doesn't vary too much, aside from the details. This is because most products share similar components, and international users are accustomed to them. That said, innovations like Apple's Vision Pro are likely to change everything, particularly when it comes to 3D and mixed reality products.

@@AlienaCai Thanks for your thorough answers with examples. It makes sense. While I agree that component design, such as buttons and cards, may not need much innovation, I believe that interface/interaction can still be innovative and evolve. For instance, features like carousels, side menus, and floating menu animations are now standardized, but they didn't exist until someone came up with this interface/interaction approach. In these cases, would you go for innovation or stick with familiarity aligned with users' mental model?

Would you say using Framer is any different than coding the website myself using HTML, CSS, JS? Would recruiters pay attention to this?

Recruiters won't pay much attention to how you built your portfolio. They pay more attention to your case studies and designs 👍
