Today's video is a layered macrame wall hanging and I really went all in on this one - three different colors of cords, beads and new patterns. I hope you like the end result as I certainly had fun making it 😊 Read on for measurement and shopping suggestions.
The finished macrame piece is about 90 cm (35 in) wide and 100 cm (39 in) long.
I needed the following supplies:
90 cm (35 in) dowel
100 beads (this depends on the size of the beads, mine were about 50mm)
84 m (276 ft.) of the Sand 5 mm single twist cord
66 m (217 ft.) of the Sand 1,5 mm single twist cord
15,5 m (51 ft.) of the Sunset 5 mm 3ply cord
15,5 m (51 ft.) of the Terracotta 5 mm 3ply cord
Here are the cord measurements for the individual sections:
First section (bead string):
1x2 m (6,6 ft.) of the 1,5 mm Sand cord
Second section (sand belt):
8x4 m (13 ft.) 1,5 mm Sand
The above is for one side only
Third section (braid):
1x5 m (16 ft.) Terracotta
1x5 m (16 ft.) Sunset
The above is for one side only
I've mentioned taking the pattern for the braid from this video by Kathy: • 5 Square Knot Variatio...
Fourth section (diamond patter):
5x4,5 m (177 in) of the 5 mm Sand
24x80 cm (31 in) Sand for the fringe
3x23 cm (9 in) to make one tassel
The above is for one side only

I love the color combination I would never thought that they will go together, but they absolutely do😍..one thing I really appreciate about your tutorials is the detailed instructions..sometime I work on project and there will be something off and I don’t know why.. all the details you talked about really make a difference in the final product, so thank you for acknowledging them.

It was funny with the colors, at first when I just had them in front of me I thought they went well together, then when I put on the braid I started doubting the choice and then it again all came together with the tassels 😄 I'm really happy to hear about the detailed instructions because I often need to make decisions on what to leave in and what to take out otherwise the videos would be at least twice as long....

This is gorgeous! I have what are almost identical beads on their way to me now, and this is looking like it might be the right project for my sort of beginner self to graduate in to larger wall hangings - complicated, but not massive, and I’ll be able to practice a few different knots and joining and tension techniques without getting super complicated (which would totally frustrate me!). Thank you!!
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
I think you got it exactly right - big projects might seem intimidating but when you break it down into the individual parts you often find out that it's the exact same knots you are using on smaller pieces, there is just more of them 😁 One thing with the beads that can make it more tricky and frustrating to work with is the size of the hole in the middle. That will determine what size of cord you can use and also the pattern. Fingers crossed and have fun! 😊

I have tons of yarn - do you think that would be a good medium to at least practice with? I know I can brush it out and a lot of it is really good wool, what do you think? I have the 9mm cord and all that I need except a dowel lol! I have I great big, heavy duty embroidery hoop for quilting and was wondering if I could start a small project on that. What do you think? Your work is so inspiring and beautiful and you are a really great teacher!'that might be the most important of your many talents- that you can pass your knowledge on to others and in so doing, bring us such joy. That is grace. And I'm grateful to have found you.
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
Oh thank you! I really appreciate that 😊 So the yarn is 9mm thick? That could definitely work. Usually yarn is much thinner and that's what makes it hard to do macrame with because the knots are then very small and delicate so it's not easy to learn. But really any cord-like material can be used for macrame 😉 You can even try simple knots with shoe laces if you want 😄 And you can also use the embroidery hoop to practice with, you can try some of the wreath tutorials I have for that....

I LOVE this! I liked the new knot - Solomon bar knot? Really gave it texture and made it pop. When you do the tassels - could you attach them in the three strands as you showed but not brush them out until after they're in place? Would that work? If it does, I think it would be less time consuming
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
I do really enjoy the Solomon bar, I have been using that one in quite a few projects...I think I know what you mean. You could do that too but then you wouldn't be able to brush out the entire tassel but only the ends that are sticking out. The knot with which they are attached would not be brushed out. So it would be less time consuming because you would be brushing out a smaller portion of the tassel but it would change the look a bit. I think it depends on what look you would prefer 😉

@@annabaginova01 yes I agree with you. That was the way we attached fringe on crochet projects - only now that I think, we used a lark's head knot to put the fringe through the work. Thanks for your response! I am due to get my 8mm macrame rope (no 9mm) and dowel etc. Tomorrow for my first project in over 30 years!

Do you have a source for the beads in the US? I have trouble finding colorful beads (not wood) with holes large enough for macrame. Love your videos, especially the details on the supplies, as well as your clear, patient instructions. Thanks!
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any particular brand or store in the US, I would suggest looking on Etsy or Amazon (I don't know what exactly you are looking for but this amzn.to/3o14yb7 caught my attention, it's a shame they are out of stock). And I am sure there will be plenty of places selling similar ones, if we have them in our tiny Czech Republic you guys must have them in the US. I buy mine from a jewellery beads supplier who has a very handy website where you can filter based the hole size. And last tip - even if the hole is smaller you can still use them you just need thinner cord - I was using only 1,5 mm for this project 😉 I hope this helps.

This is so beautiful. Love the colours. I can't get the 5mm terracotta in a 3 ply, would single twist be OK to use instead? If so should I also swap the sunset to a single twist?
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
It's okay to use single twist as well 😉 I only used 3ply because I had some leftover cords that I wanted to use up...The braid will be a little bit less textured (this is what the 3ply cords add to it) but since it's such a small portion of the piece I don't think the difference will be really visible...
@kimwellington3486

Hi, I was wondering, if you were to make two of the same pattern, one in a 5mm cord, and another in, for example, a 2.5mm cord, would the final piece in the smaller cord be half the size of the larger cord? Hope that makes sense 🙈
@annabaginova01
@annabaginova01 2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋 That's the theory but I have never really tested it...I think it won't be so precise but the smaller the cord the smaller the final piece is definitely true. You can also always alternate the pattern a little bit to fit a certain cord size to make the final size similar to the original (add or remove cords/knots in top rows for example).
