A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is
a cerebral shunt that drains excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
when there is an obstruction in the normal outflow or there is a decreased absorption of the fluid.
Cerebral shunts are used to treat hydrocephalus.
