V-Star xvs1300 08' Front Pulley Swap 30T to 31T (all years)

This is about switching the front drive pulley of an vxs1300 from the stock 30-tooth to a 31-tooth, which is typically used in the Styrker. This swap will lower your RPM's for all gears, essentially making 5th gear into a highway gear, since this bike doesn't have a 6th gear. It won't have as much snap off the line anymore, but with a little more throttle these high torque bikes handle it well.

Ok, here's the verdict...
Overall it feels like it "smoothed" out the gears more. It felt less jerky, and 1st doesn't seem as shit-awful low, but still pretty low. It helped with the speedo a couple mph (nothing impressive), and the bike did feel more at ease doing higher speeds. At one point I shifted out of 4th at 75mph (I had it canned), not because it needed it, I just wanted to hit 5th before I had to slow it down. She wanted to go for more, it was a good feeling, like it was actually able to stretch out for once. In truth I'm not a 0-60 kinda guy, but I do have a Cobra pipe, PowrFlo intake, and Fi2000R O2. So I do have a little more power than a stock bike, and she sounds great. Really I almost feel like the 30T vs the 31T pulley on the 1300 and Stryker was an engineering mess-up between two differently styled bikes, almost like the thought process was backwards on this front pulley.
Short answer: I like it and would definitely recommend it for my type of setup.

6:28 it's a good idea (some bikes specify it in the service manual) to use a bit of anti-seize lube on the shaft/pulley spines. i'm surprised they didn't include a locking washer for that nut, i'd definitely use some thread lock.. for the belt deflection, some ppl use a pencil and a scale to apply the required 10lbs of force: note the belt position in the adjusting window then lower the bike jack so that the belt pushes down on the pencil till the scale shows 10 lbs and note the new position of the belt in the window. the position where the force must be applied and the recommended belt deflection is bike specific.. (either the manual or a forum can offer the exact info)

I want to put another smaller pulley with fewer teeth (the original is 30 teeth), could anyone advise where to buy? The original transfer is too long. Thank you

That is a one time use washer, you just put back on there. You should NOT re-use that washer. It's a tapered washer that assists in keeping the nut tight. You should also stake the collar of that nut back into the shaft like it was before you loosened it. ( in case you didn't look at good before you loosened it ) That also assists in keeping that nut tight...That nut is also supposed to have 100ft lbs of torque on it as well...

Lucky you, 30MM. My 07 is a 36 MM / ½ inch drive. I set up everything as you did and I think I need an impact wrench to get it loose. How long of a breaker bar did you use?

I have a 07 1300 tourer and the 1st gear has always scared the hell out of me . I've had Ivan's reflashed done and although it helped with the jerkiness it did nothing as far as the 1st gear was concerned. So you're saying that this helped ?

Yes, it's an easy mod and works great for these high-torque bikes.

@@z33thr33 speed wise? Well it changes the speedometer by about 2mph, but bring down the RPM's a few hundred I'd say. She doesn't scream as much at 75mph. I'm also gonna do the Ivan Flash to get rid of the jerky throttle issue too.

How did you know when the wheel is aligned? I did a bit of strech to the belt and i didnt remember if i did same number of rotation on the small bolts..

Line the axle up to the same notch on each side. They are little grooves.
