Sperry Cars roam the rails in countries all over the world. They look for defects the naked eye just can't see and help to prevent train accidents.

I worked/lived on I think six different sperry cars between 2001 and 2011. And even though the big cars are fun to see, I can tell you switching to trucks makes for a much more comfortable life. Hotels with clean showers and clean sheets every night, instead of dirty smelly old sperry cars! Lol

Excellent video. I worked for Sperry many years ago. I started out on car #124 testing rail between Galesburg and Minneapolis on the BNSF. I then went to car #135 and tested from Minneapolis to Minot on CP Rail. My last car was #145 testing between Galesburg and KC on BNSF.

There's a Sperry that I see parked behind a club building in town every few weeks or so. The crew must sleep when I drove by at 4am. The rail I find them resting on seems like a pretty busy bit of line.

Thanks for the knowledge! I came across Sperry Car SRS 129 last week. Was not quite sure what I was looking at and only snapped a few pictures of it. I had never seen one before.

The sperry cars were once doodlebugs before becoming the track inspection cars we all know. The railcars are all bright yellow. They're still used for track inspection today. The Sperry cars look good

Not all of them started out as retired Doodlebugs. Quite a few of them were built from scratch by Sperry.

I worked for Sperry 1983-84. Car 127, 145, and 132 I think were the numbers. Started in Lordsburg, NM went from there to Tucson,AZ. Then to Louisiana, Texas, Oklhoma, Colorado, to Brownsville,TX right up to Mata Morris, MX. Home to Illinois for Christmas and then to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Then to Septile Island Quebec, Labrador City, New Foundland. Back to Philly, and DC on the 110 mph Amtracks. For a 19 year old kid, I saw a lot of country in a short time. Thing about trains, you rarely see the pretty parts of town. They paid double minimum wage + a decent stipen. Usually 5 - 10 hrs OT. Good money for a single kid.

Loudest thing I was ever a pilot on, the engine compartment protruded into the cab area, could even talk to the rtc without leaving the cab. the guy that ran the car had a real love for gold chains and told me about it, guess they must have paid these guys well. Any time we had to pull over for a meet we would fly remote control helicopters that they kept in the car or play video games and shoot at things with slingshots, fun days on the rails!!

Great video, Charlie. I have never seen the Doodlebugs on the Lineville. The Geometry, yes, but never the Doodlebug. I did get stopped one Sunday morning when the were putting a high rail on the Lineville between LaGrange and Warm Springs. It's not a quick process.

Some of these instantly communicate defects to the back office and the back office sends slow orders through the PTC system back to the head end on locomotives following the Sperry and the back end may call for a track inspector right away.

Sperry cars do not utilize cameras for flaw detection. They use Ultrasonic and Induction technology to look for internal rail flaws. Surface flaws are documented by other technology not associated with Sperry or their trucks/cars.

Hi Charlie, another great video. How often are the rails inspected? Also, I'm assuming that the inspection is only for main line and not for sidings.

Always wonder what is the actual lifetime of a railroad tie made of creosoted wood? How do RR's legally dispose of used ties? What is the distance fron each side of a track that is railroad property? Are RR's legally responsible fo maintaining their rail sides of invasive weeds?😊
