You may want to invest in some snake leg guards or boots. I grew up around there, and I don’t know how many times I stepped right over a rattlesnake and didn’t even know it. Also, I would suggest adding a snakebite kit to your first aid supply. It’s a must for the Arizona desert.

Hey another thing to keep an eye out for in Arizona is wasps. They use cavities under rocks for dens. When disturbed. Well start running. Welcome to Arizona.. haha

Chris, get a blacklight flashlight. Useful for clearing your property of scorpions as well as your campsite. Trust me, they're out there. Just don't get freaked out once you discover how many there really are. Tonto and the Superstitions have a lot to offer - primitive tracks, lakes, rivers, canyons, wildlife, historic towns, and awesome campsites. Keep exploring.

I camped by Drake Arizona and had one under my tent when I packed up and a 2nd came out when I opened the tent in the garage to dry it. 😮

Chris. A few episodes ago you mentioned not being as surefooted as you were before the broken foot. I bought a pair of "old guy" trekking poles a little over a year ago. It made a world of difference to me in confidence over rougher terrain especially when I'm carrying 20-30 lbs of camera gear and water and snacks on my back.

As I commented in last weeks episode, you delivered on one of the many fantastic areas Arizona has to offer. Recognized immediately the area you were in. Perhaps by design, you just touched the surface of the sites in the area. BTW the dispersed CG you tagged are great for star gazing. Thanks for sharing.

Chris, I do believe that is the old alignment of the road. Compare on the GAIA 1900 historic map and I believe it lines up. There is so much history in and around the Superstitions region. There are very neat things to find too. Several ruin sites, caves, ranches, you name it. Even some filming locations for old movies and TV shows and a marker for a whiskey Company scavenger hunt. Enjoyed the video. Maybe we cross paths on the trail sometime 👍

As a local I will say welcome to my favorite trail! It's short but sweet, the technical part at the beginning is great for some quick fun. Every time I make an upgrade to the vehicle I go out there to test it out. And the scenery isn't bad either! 😍

Oh, you have reminded us that we need to get out and explore the Superstitions again. We have stayed away since they closed section of Apache Trail due to storm damage a few years ago. But that area is gorgeous.

Been to Tortillo Flats a few times in the family SUV.....but have not gotten there in my Rubicon. Was somewhat unaware of the trails in this area......and may need to plan a trip that away pretty soon. I did the road past the Roosevelt impoundment some years ago....and traveled around the superstition mountains.....it is a beautiful (albeit long) drive......but I heard they closed that road.

Please tell me you got some ice cream next door. If not, you have a reason to return. A Butterscotch pecan and mint chocolate chip waffle cone is on my must have list every time I go to Tortilla Flat. The roasted candied pecans are bomb ass road food as well, but they will be gone before you clear canyon lake.
