Join me as I travel from Bukhara to Samarkand by train and explore that legendary city in Uzbekistan!
Sites visited:
1- Gur Emir Mausoleum:
Here are located the tombs of Emir Timur (Tamerlane), his sons Shokhrukh and Miran Shah and grandsons Ulugbek and Muhammad Sultan. Tamerlane’s teacher, Sayyid Baraka, is also buried here. The earliest part of the complex was built at the end of the 14th century by the orders of Muhammad Sultan. Now only the foundations of the madrasah and khanaka, the entrance portal and a part of one of four minarets remains.
2- Registan Square (‘Sandy Place’):
The heart of Samarkand. The site arose long before the Mongol invasion as a center of crafts and trade. It is the intersection of six roads that go from the city gates. Three magnificent Madrasahs surround the square: Ulugbek Madrasah (1417 - 1420), Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619 - 1636) and Tilla-Kori Madrasah (1647 - 1660).
3- Siab Bazaar:
The largest in Central Asia, and the most visited place after Registan Square. You can literally find anything and everything here.
4- Bibi Khanym Mosque (built 1399-1405):
One of the most important monuments of Samarkand, built by Indian master architects. Only a grandiose ruin of it survives, but the complex is undergoing restoration.
5- Hazrat Khyzr Mosque:
The very first Mosque of Samarkand.
6- Mausoleum of the first President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov:
The Mausoleum is adjacent to the Hazrat Khizr Mosque.
7- Meros Paper Mill (Konigil Village):
The ancient tradition of making paper using ancient Samarkand technologies is explained in great detail here. Samarkand paper has a characteristic yellow tint and its shelf life is ten times longer than ordinary white paper, lasting up to 300-400 years.
8- Ulugbek Observatory (built 1424-1428):
One of the most significant observatories in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the original structure was destroyed in 1449 and rediscovered in 1908. The observatory had the form of a three-story cylindrical building 30.4 m high and 46.40 m in diameter, and contained a grandiose goniometer oriented from north to south - a sextant (or quadrant) with a radius of 40.21 m, on which measurements were made of the height of the celestial bodies above the horizon as they pass through the celestial meridian. The device is excavated and well preserved underground. It is assumed that its arc made up the sixth part of the circle with the working part from 20° to 80°.
9- Shakhi Zinda Necropolis (“Cemetery Street”):
A UNESCO World Heritage List, these tombs were built by the best architects of their time and house relatives of Amir Timur, religious figures, thinkers and philosophers. In ancient times, this was the largest religious and cultural center in Central Asia.
