C-grunt same. ford is bringing back the ranger to probably compete with Colorado. But in all honestly, I feel like they aren't midsize trucks anymore. they're more of a full size I'd say.

The 4.7L was NOT designed by Mercedes. It was 100% Chrysler designed and was done prior to the "merger". It was introduced in the 2nd Gen Grand Cherokee in 1998 It shares the same transmission bolt pattern on the back as the earlier 5.2/5.9L Magnum "LA" series small block engines. It was Chrysler first (and only to date) attempt at a "modern" OHC V8, probably in response to the modular Ford.

Reg Sparkes ok I stand corrected! I was told that by a 5Star Chrysler tech! So I believers that to be true! But after just reading the history of the engine on AllPar, I am even more impressed with the engine, not enough to own one, but still. Take car have fun and stay safe!

My brother had a 2003 Dakota. It was the crew cab 4x4 with the 5.9L V8. Oh god that truck was awesome. I drove through Toronto with it, and the rumble of that engine was as good as a siren - everybody stayed well away from it, and pedestrains would yeild for us when turning! It was an awesome truck. Well, except for the fact that he had to fix the transmission, brakes, exhaust, and then realized his rocker panels were gone and his truck bed was being held together by bedliner and bondo. And it was costing him $100/week in gas on top of all that. He affectionately referred to it as "his little red lemon." As badass as that truck was, it just had way too many problems and he had to get rid of it. On the plus side, he now has a 2003 Canyon with the inline 5 and Offroad package! Lacks a bit of the grunt of the Dakota but to me it feels way more responsive and torquey.

Nice Dakota! I've owned a couple over the years, the first I bought with my dad, who needed a work truck for his retirement handy man business. That was a 1988 ext cab 4x4, V6 automatic that ran great for him and I for 20 years, that was sold to a kid with 140,500 miles on it! That truck never used any oil or broke down. All we had to do is maintain and brakes and exhaust, belts, hoses and ball joint tie rod ends. I also owned a 2003, reg cab V8 5 spd manual that I ordered from a local dealer! That was a Sport model, with every option but the automatic. I ordered the factory tow package with limited slip 3:92 gearing. That truck was a blast to drive, it had the getup an Go of a Mustang, but was great off road and especially on the beaches. When that truck was brand new, I drove from my home in Massachusetts to a picnic table manufacturer in Ohio to be 60 tables in a knox down form that came in a box 6' long and 30" wide by 10" deep, I was able to load 12 in the bed and the rest in a 15' UHaul trailer, then towed them home to sell. The truck towed that like it was not even there! Even up so of the longest interstate hills with the cruise control set at the speed limits, at 12 mpg! But the mileage was nothing to write home about, at 15 city and 20 hyw at the speed limits, but start to jump on it and 10 mpg was not funny! But that truck lasted me a good 12 years till I traded for a Charger R/T AWD!

Of all the trucks I've ever owned, my 1999 Dodge Dakota club cab 4x4 5.2 V8 was my favorite. If I could do it again, I would order a manual transmission instead of the automatic (I don't know what the hell I was thinking when I ordered it with an automatic!) Loved the balance of the truck, it was stupidly good off-road, and just the size I needed in both the cab, and the bed. My current 2006 Ram 1500 has a shorter bed (6'4") than my old Dakota (6'6") did. Didn't realize it until I loaded my ATV in the back of the Ram, and couldn't shut the tailgate...where the Dakota I could do it no problem.

Dang. That was one of my happy places back when I lived in CO. Got my Cherokee stuck out there once after the snow had melted....slid down backwards down one of the more technical hills and into a bank of mud. It plugged the tailpipe and stalled the engine. Technically if the Jeep would have run, I think I could have gotten it out of there under its own power. LOL Some kids in a Toyota pickup pulled me out of that predicament.
