After this truck had a close encounter (eg. impact) with a wall at high speed, the wheel bearing on that side started to develop a vibration so we know it needed to be replaced. Working out a time to do the work meant that we had to get it done in the middle of the night but that has never stopped us before! It's a simple job slowed down a little bit by rust but since it had all been apart before it isn't anything too crazy.
Date of filming: August 2nd, 2018
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Country Blues - Silent Partner
4:34 The Clean Up Man - Dan Lebowitz
9:53 Rotten Gardenias - Huma-Huma

For torquing the axle nut you can stick a screwdriver into the vents of the brake rotor through the middle of the brake caliper to keep the hub from turning

I would be worried about breaking a vent rib on the rotor or bending the screwdriver with that much torque, but in reality that would probably do just fine

How things have changed; in the 1980's when I did a lot of vehicle work; wheel-nuts were torqued down then released by backing off the nut by 90 degrees. Great video thanks

These sealed unitized bearings eliminate all of that, including the need to repack them. Personally, I think they're a great upgrade. They usually last for well over 100,000 miles and then you just bolt a new one on. I rank them right up there with serpentine belts (which almost never get thrown off, are dead silent, and last a decade) on my list of favorable advances in automotive technology over the last 40 or so years.

Fluid film on the surface where the hub goes to the knuckle. Hub to rotor. And rotor to wheel keeps everything from becoming one rusted unit. It doesn’t get onto everything in sight and it’s sprayable.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 жыл бұрын
I do mine exactly as he did his in the video (perhaps less anti-seize) and it's been working well for me. Never tried fluid film... I'm not even sure if that's what it's called? I usually just hear old timers talking about spraying stuff with used oil and I assumed that's what they meant by "fluid film".

@@TheBrokenLife fluid film is literally the name of the product. it's a lanolin (sheep's wool oil) based product. dries to a soft waxy finish that resists washing off and keeps oxygen off even bare steel for quite a while. smells nice, too (in my opinion.) I use it for undercoating my car every winter. a couple coats lasts through 10,000ish miles of new england winter driving and keeps the rust at bay.

The best trick I found to remove the hub assembly from the steering knuckle is to use a punch and hammer and bash on the assembly sideways to get it to rotate in the knuckle. Once it starts rotating, you know you broke the rust weld and it should be easier to pull out. Mine were jammed pretty bad so one person bashed while another used a slide hammer to pull the assembly out after having applied lots of penetrating fluid and heat.

Good thing you replace them early on. I remember when I bought my car I didn’t understand why I couldn't turn the wheels even with the brake pads off. And then suddenly the whole car started making some crazy noises at 20-30 mph. Going back in the records the car had new wheel baring in 2015 (it was 2018) both fronts. Learned that you can’t reuse the spindle nuts. They backed off and the loose CV shaft killed it.

some newer chevy trucks must not have the proper seals from the factory and most of the cheapo hub assemblies lack these as well. Just a few mud puddles and/or after heavy rains will ruin these assemblies. It's really fun going down a two lane road and your left wheel hub assembly locks up just as another car is coming down the road toward you.

Hey I've been watching your channel a while now i would like to give a small advise. You shouldn't use that much antiseize on the surface of bearing and rotor. Only a small amount on the center is enough. If you put too much antiseize on all of the surfaces you can damage the rotor believe it or not. During braking the rotor heats up and the antiseize also. Antiseize does not cool down fast enough as the rotor it self and cause of that the rotor might warp. Thats why manufactures dont apply grease to those areas. Im a mechanic for mazda for 6+years and thats the advise from tests they gave us. Cheers

Interesting! Can't say I've heard of that before, and never had an issue myself although I don't usually push the brakes on them particularly hard. Will have to keep that in mind, thanks for sharing! Most of the time getting wheels off isn't a huge issue (rotors/drums sometimes are) but it helps prevent rust buildup that can lead to a non-flat mounting surface, too.

Be extremely careful with that bolt+ hammer to get the hub off. You can very easily rip a small tear in the axle boot without even noticing and the boots are very weak. Then axle grease will slowly spin out until you need yet another thing replaced.

That was like walking the excess length off of your blue jeans hem!! Can rebuild a Chevy Silverado transmission. Has forty inches of excess cotter pins, wound around the hubs!! I spit my coffee everywhere!! If you put some anti-seize on those cotter pins, they will be much easier to unwind, when you replace that wheel bearing again, next year!!

I've plenty of unit style wheel bearing that come apart when trying to hammer them out, the balls go flying everywhere. I'd say most of them were GM cars and trucks. Big failure rate there. The cassette style press in bearings seem to be ball bearing type too, I use a slide hammer to remove the flange and see the balls in a cage. I haven't seen tapered bearings in hubs in cars except that truck above, I guess it depend on what you're working on.

Food for thought. Torquing the wheel bearing after putting the wheel on the ground changes the torque spec and can damage the hub. Best thing I've been able to do when torquing axle nuts you stick a screwdriver or alignment pin in the vents of the rotor and the caliper will stop it from turning. I've been able to do over 300 foot pounds with this method.
@evsnova74
@evsnova74 5 жыл бұрын
I came to the comments to say the same thing. You don't want to put a load on the bearing before torquing it.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 жыл бұрын
When you torque a unit bearing, you're not actually applying torque to the bearing itself. You're tightening the axle shaft to the bearing's inner race. That's why unit bearings are torqued at stupid high values (150ft-lbs, or more) and "normal" wheel bearings are more like 10ft-lbs. The preload on a unit bearing is done at the factory when it's built. When I do unit bearings, I get them as tight as I can with someone holding the brakes, and then torque them to spec with it on the ground (if the brakes didn't hold it that high... 50/50 success rate there).
