One day Sean was at a PickNPull and met this guy Mikey. Mikey recognized Sean from our KZfaq videos and struck up a conversation with him. Mikey was wondering if he could borrow my special rear axle tool to service his axles and asked Sean to relay the request to me. If I had a crystal ball and could have seen what a cool and generous guy Mikey was, I would have lended him my tool in a heartbeat. But, since I didn't know him and I've had bad experiences in the past lending things out to people, I told him no. But, this started out a conversation between the two of us and I learned Mikey was going to swap out his 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 engine in his 2002 Toyota 4runner for a 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 out of a wrecked Toyota Sequoia. I told Mikey we would love to video this project and asked if we could be a part of it. He said, YES!
Mikey has a friend named Wes who owns a Custom Hotrod Shop in Santa Clara, CA. The majority of the work took place at Wes' shop and he was also cool with us filming the project.

Yeah, we hear what you're saying. Others have said the same thing. However, the engine is running at the very beginning so you might have missed it.

WOW! Lots of great work here. V8 swap looks like it was a factory option. Camera work and narrating showed lots of informative stuff. Video editing nicely wrapped up what I'm sure was hours of footage. Now let's see that thing rip down the highway/trail!

This is one of the benefits of living in California. Vehicles last for a long time. Areas of the country where they salt the roads, vehicles just don't last as long due to the corrosion.

Nicely done. This is definitely an easier and more affordable undertaking for those of us who live in free states. Nicely done. I definitely appreciate the adherence to keeping things as “factory” as possible. The exhaust wasn’t a concern for me because we don’t have to pass emissions tests. My only concerns were the tone and NOT throwing an emissions related code. I definitely didn’t want the factory sound but I didn’t want it to be obnoxious either. Dual borlas and custom 3.25” stainless plumbing makes for a beautiful growl. Thanks for the 1st rate Yota content. It’s very helpful!

a big thumbs up to mikey & timmy;s garage for this excellent exhibition of your very well researched & knowledgeable skills concerning this 2uz 4 runner swap ,,it is highly commendable to note such attention to detail to such a high level , that the final finished product turned out so astonishingly great , that one could swear the truck rolled out the factory that way ..it is also much appreciated by all toyota die hards to know that you chose the 2uz over an Ls swap .. much appreciated keeping the motor true to the toyota stable .. finally ... am certain the smile on your face when behind the wheel decimates all the time & effort you have invested into this project ...hope to see updates on this project with some in car video etc ... thanks again ,, & a Great Christmas season to all .. Amazingly enough though, not too long after doing this involved swap, Mikey and his wife decided they wanted to purchase an Airstream trailer. Since the 4runner, even with the V8, would have been majorly exceeding the towing limits, he gave this beautiful 4runner to his brother and bought a Yukon Denali to pull his trailer. He didn't have the room at his house for the 4runner so he gave it away. I'd say Mikey is a very nice brother. So unfortunately, we won't be seeing his V8 Swapped 4runner again. Mikey loves vehicle projects though so maybe we'll find ourselves documenting another one of his in the future. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy Wrenching!

Great video of Mikey's 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 engine swap. After watching this video, buying the donor vehicle, the amount of research, fabrication, customization of everything, and the actual cost, I have total respect for Mikey's abilities & skills to put it all together. Definitely not a weekend project for someone of limited mechanical abilities.

I have to agree, it was an awesome project to be a part of. On top of it, Mikey is a really cool and generous dude. He just recently assisted me in installing an aftermarket trans temp gauge in my 98 4runner.

There are 4.7L V8 manufacturers on 4Runner, they’re very strong moved. I loved that 4.7L V8. Thanks for video. 40:00 I realize you guys didn’t looking deeper about 4Runner actually made with 4.7L, V8. Meaning you will get many parts from toyota dealer or junkyard from 4Runner with 4.7L and V8. If you could got 4Runner with 4.7L, V8 you would not spent additional modifications. But it’s good to have you guys video your project for knowledge.

You can't just pull parts off a 4th Gen 4runner with a V8 and think you're not going to have to do some customization to make this swap work. For instance, custom exhaust work was needed. The electric cooling fan shroud that was fabricated was needed. And, I'm pretty sure the custom air conditioning lines were needed as well.

I feel you on the Pep Boys hesitation. I learned the hard way to never trust them when I had them install a new distributor cap on my 89 Prelude 2.0 SI (with 4 wheel steering). I did most of the work myself on that thing but didn't feel like renting the timing gun and learning how to do that. A week later the cap caught fire and toasted most of the stuff on the top of my engine. Miss the hell out of that car......

Due to tensioner malfunction 05 Tundra 4x4 V8 bought the farm. Found a salvage 06 with similar miles 1500.00 shipped. Unbolted converter to remove and replace engine. Little more HP able to replace t/b rear main seal converter . Like new now. 2 years out no problems .

I bet dude! I am 36 years old and have ALWAYS wanted to work on cars. I have the mentality of the guy in this who put the sequoia engine in the 4runner. I'm a V8 t-bird owner myself but going to buy the 2006 4Runner v8 sport tomorrow in fact. 55k miles! Anyway, this video really shows me how much manpower and time it takes to do what you just accomplished. I would feel very proud if I were you! I hope you got paid well my man! Have a great day!

I have a very serious interest in doing this. I have a 94 ex-cab 4x4 with the 3.slo and while most people do the 5VZ swap which is much easier, I think I want more power for towing. I've already purchased a 2-inch body lift from 4Crawler which I'm about to do and will then be installing a long travel kit and am swapping the rear axle to a 2002 Tundra to match the extended width of the front LT kit. I'm moving to Washington state in ~ 2 or 3 years and the goal is to pull my trailer back and a forth at least twice to move my small shop. I also weld MIG/TIG and fabricate and do various CAD/CNC work so I know I could tackle this and do most everything myself labor wise. I did the R150F clutch last year in my driveway. I've worked on cars since I was 15. I feel if I'm going to go through the trouble of a swap, I might as well go the extra distance to really have what I want, and being able to tow around 4,000-5,000lbs much more easily is really what I'm after. I've toyed with just buying a Tundra but I hate automatics and also hate the bulbous looks of the early 2000 models. I'd rather stick with a lighter, more compact 5-speed manual truck with a beefy engine upgrade.

@@TimmyTheToolman Thanks, it looks like the 4.0UZ is a lot easier to pull off with a manual transmission and transfer case. Since the 2UZ was all automatics only it seems near impossible to mate the two. There are a few leads on an adapter plate but from what I can tell it also comes down to emissions issues since again, no manuals exist for that engine and thus no ECU for manual. Therefore I may have to scrap the idea or go with the 4.0L UZ or an OM617Mercedess diesel swap which a guy has well documented on here on KZfaq.

@@TimmyTheToolman Had to watch again. Id like to do the V-8 swap with my 2016 Tacoma 4x4. I would want to make the Tacoma look like the factory installed the 4.7 motor transfercase trans.

Hey Thomas, I think a shop would charge bookoo bucks to do this swap for you. It's a ton of work. Mikey did a lot of the research for the wiring harness and built it himself which alone was a ton of time. He estimated he spent 12k on this swap. I think a shop doing 100% of the work would charge you even more. But, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask what a shop what they would charge. It would have to be a shop that specializes in this sort of thing because you're average shop wouldn't take on a project like this.

Damn you shoulda got one from an 05! They had Variable valve timing and made 275 rather than 240 hp. Really cool tho!!

The variable valve timing would have been nice. Mikey realized this but he got a good deal on the Sequoia he pulled the engine from so he couldn't pass up on the deal..

Very nice! My mom has the same engine in her sequoia. Has 350,000 miles on it and still runs great with no engine work. She wants to get rid of it cause shes scared it will break down someday but I want her to push 400,000 miles 😂😂.

Yep, the 2UZ motors are known to go over 500k no problem. Tell your mom not to worry and keep driving it.

At the end of the video I asked Mikey how much he thinks he spent on the project. He estimated around $12,000. Mikey also did 100% of the research and labor to get all wiring correct. That was a ton of work. Start watching at 1:16:45 and that's where I ask him how much time and money he put into this project.

I always thought removing the cab was the easiest way to do the 4.7l swap. Doing this in my 84’ is going to be cake, at least till I get to the wiring.

Kris PL Glad you're impressed Chris. But, all the praise needs to be directed at our buddy Mikey. He was the brains behind this swap and his friend Wes was responsible for the necessary modifications. Sean and I were just the cameramen who documented the job. But, we're stoked we were able to get this video made because it was a very cool project to witness and share with the world.

This is incredible. I would love to do something like this or the new Cummings crate motor, but this is WAY beyond my wallet and knowledge. My long term plan is a full rebuild and supercharger

I'm rebuilding my motor now and it was supercharged. Decided to go with 9:1 pistons from LCE. When I disassembled my motor at 300k miles, I had for or five stuck piston rings even with the URD 315cc injector setup. I do know last year the dealership (broke down in New Mexico) put standard plugs in..which may have killed the motor. Feel free to email at chuckforquer at gmail dot com.

I know Mikey transplanted several of the sequoia parts onto the 4runner, and that the oil pan clears the frame. Was that the particular reason why the sequoia 4x4 was selected as the donor vehicle as opposed to a 2wd sequoia or another vehicle? Thanks and love your videos!

I don't know why Mikey selected the Sequoia other than the fact that he was able to buy the whole vehicle relatively cheap through the Copart Auto Auction. The Sequoia was wrecked bad in a crash, but the drivetrain was in good shape.

Yeah it is possible to use the Sequoia instrument cluster which looks cool, but has its own set of wiring challenges. I wanted a full OEM look so I kept the 4Runner cluster.

Fantastic video Tim! Did you ask Mikey if he ever contemplated of just swapping the body of a 4Runner onto the chassis of a sequoia? Then fabricate all new body mounts?

Though it seems like it would be straight forward to do that, you would still have to mate the body wiring harness with the ECU so I don't think it would be any easier. The advantage to doing that is you would get rear disc brakes and some confidence in a 7000lb towing capacity.

Crazy the amount of time and commitment that went into this! I can only imagine! I definitely dont think i would want to do this. As much as I like the 3rd gens, if I wanted the v8 option id go find a 4th gen with one in it from the factory. Not the same, but a lot easier. Kudos to him for making this work though! Serious dedication!

The update is Mikey gave this rig to his brother not too long after we published this video. He wanted a more powerful vehicle to tow a streamline trailer so he bought a Yukon Denali. Thats it for sequels.

@@Sean20Gaming Yeah, I was a little blown away Mikey gave his truck to his brother shortly after we filmed it, but if you know Mikey, it sort of makes sense. For one, Mikey is a super generous guy. Secondly, he's a project guy. As soon as he was done with this one, he was already working on something else. His motivation is the challenge of pulling off a project. He succeeded with this one and it was on to the next.

He got it somewhere in Japan. Don't know what supplier. The company ORS, Offroad Solution might have information for you to source that radiator. It’s a hilux surf diesel model radiator.

If you ever have to replace the fuel filler neck, like me,it’s a pain. Take the clamps off feed and reassemble. Much easier....just figured someone might use the info.

If I have one Sequoia 2003, Can I mount the 4runner on the Sequoia chassis ?? I see same project on the Denali 2003 chassis with mount 67's Blazer. I think is more easy.. Nice video.

Don't know. We've never done it and I haven't heard of somebody doing it. With heavy modification, anything can be done.
