You Aussies got our 351 Cleveland casts in 1971 and produced for decades, I gather, one of the greatest engines Ford ever built. I feel a special draw to your country and hope to someday visit Mt. Panorama and all your wonderful racing venues to learn more about your deep and rich racing history. From a lifetime American Ford fan.

Hi Iceman, that question has been asked many a time to Moffat, his reply very humble and along the lines of he did not wish to stay, he thought the competition in Australia was just as, if not more of a challenge against the likes of Bob Jane, Norm Beechey and of course Ian Geoghegan. I dare say if he did stay in the USA he would have been quite a bit more famous stateside, but we in Australia would have missed a great generation of racing thanks to his talents.

I saw the Mustang at Oran Park and at Warwick Farm as a jaw-open and wide-eyed kid. Beechey, Jane and the almighty Moffat were hammer and tongs every second of every race! Jane and the 427 Camaro fighting the screaming 302 Boss is never, ever leaving my memory. The huge crowds and the sheer excitement. Moffat and that Coke Mustang was a religious experience for me.

I grew up a Holden Boy & Mainly a Brocky Fan. I always loved The GTHO Phase III. But when Brock went to the Sierra & BMW M3 I learned to appreciate the Other Cars More. I always thought Alan Moffatt & a Big Bad Enemy, till I met him at Winton in 1995 when I was 15. He is the Most Genuine Man I've ever met. His Time for the Fans is Legendary. When Brocky tragically Died, It was a Knife through the Heart. But when I seen Alan Moffatt talk about his Best Friend "Peter" it ultimately changed how I ever seen Touring Racing. Thank You to the Bowden Family for sharing your Collection. And to Dick & Alan for sharing your Memories of the Good Old days of Real Racing.

I just adored the Moffat Mustang.Before I colour pics I had a big poster of Alan in the Mustang hooking into a corner. Truth be told I actually learned a lot of driving skills at Warwick Farm watching braking area, downshifts, braking points and how they accelerated out of corners - I used to go to every viewing point around the track and analytically observe LOL. ABSOLUTELY TRUE STORY. Never under-estimate the impact you both have have had on young people. Great video thanks for taking the time and posting.

Thanks for the reply, Bowdens! I to agree that it's great that Moffat made the move to Australia. Had it not been for him, Ford might not be as successful now as they are today. He put Ford on the map in Oz, as far as I'm concerned.

Despite being a life long Holden fan, I've got to admit to liking both Dick Johnson and Allan Moffat. Both were champion drivers and people, despite Moffat often being portrayed as the 'bad guy' more because of his introverted nature than anything else.

@@twilightroach4274 ... Brock's private life to me, was his business and not mine. But as for his racing, I also look at it this way. Brocky wouldn't be who he was without the likes of Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Allan Grice, Bob Morris, Colin Bond, John Harvey etc etc.

An Old Video, but still really good......Bowdens have the Best Collection of Aussie Racing Cars......Allan Moffat was only portrayed as the "Bad Guy" by Holden fans, they often said he was a Dirty Driver, but there was no evidence that I was aware of to back that up. I think it was because he won races.....Dick was such an entertaining bloke, his Race Cam footage was always humorous, even when he was in an uncompetitive car like the Group A Mustang......I hope to visit their collection one day and see it in The Flesh.

Thanks to living in Noble Park, an early morning paper round and a sick note of dubious provenance from Mum, it was possible to attend Sandown rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The sound of 351 GTHO's and the Boss 302 Coca Cola Mustang thundering down the main straight on open pipes was a never forgotten experience.

Some of these cars are just other-worldly. Real cars. As a Brit I'm fascinated by the Aussie touring car scene - a world of its own. Supertourers have fond memories of their own attached (they looked like your dad's family saloon too until 1995 when the aero crap started coming in) but nothing beats these monstrous Aussie V8 barges. RWD, full interiors, side pipes. And they looked like road cars too. The 80s Mustangs were never really considered sporting in the same way as the 60s originals but Dickie Johnson's one is a beautiful bit of kit. Modern day V8 Supercars and BTCC cars just don't have that same aura. They're too advanced. The flaws of the old-school saloons was what made touring car racing so popular - they weren't designed to hoon round tracks and that was part of the fun.

Great video. Being a Yank all the Aussie history and cars are fresh, new, and incredibly interesting, to me. I've already amassed quite the collection of Aussie race and muscle cars in diecast...but although I love what Allan has done for Australian motorsport, I wonder what he would've/could've done had he stayed in North America...gone the SCCA/Trans-Am route, or gone NASCAR, OR gone open-wheel, etc? I'd love to ask him, or hear that question asked of him.

Agree with him on Crompton, has done so much motor racing . Moffat and Geogehan at Sandown were incredible Pete was riding Moffats bumper down the main Straight in Falcons the teams must been going nuts.he was on his bumper. Imagine if someone did that today. I am convinced that Peter Geoghan, Norm Beechey, Bob Jane & Moffat to name a few would have spent all their time being penalised. Great racing to, These cars did not run the Bathurst 500, different rules.

Can you imagine the fantasies Allan Moffat's mustang inspired in an impressionable car-loving thirteen year old who lived a bus ride from Sandown? I liked that Allan was Canadian, I suppose life still felt a bit colonial in those days, and took pains to point that out to people who assumed he was American.

@BowdensOwn
@BowdensOwn 3 жыл бұрын
G'day Buck, the 78 was done by Jim Sheppard in 1980, who did the work for HDT in the day after the crash it had in 1979 Bathurst. The 79 was painted by HDT and is still the original unrestored condition from its last races after the 79 Bathurst. It's as correct as they come.

@BowdensOwn
@BowdensOwn Жыл бұрын
Ford Motor Company built a few of them in the total performance era, from 1966 and 1967 With Carroll Shelby and 1969 to 1970 with Bud Moore Racing - all named after the Trans Am championship they raced in. Later on the name was "highjacked" for a well known non-racing model that kinda lacked any real performance.

It would be cool, but there is no money in that for most of the current sponsors, so it is very unlikely you will ever see it done. About the only teams who may do it would be DJR and HDT, like they have in the recent past.

I know this is an old video, but I have to ask. Why does Neil Crompton have a bit of a bad reputation? I personally don't mind Crompo, he was a decent driver in his day and is knowledgeable about the sport. Yet I see a fair few people pouring shit all over him. Wouldn't have anything to do with him giving the Bathurst '92 crowd the middle finger while they were booing the Nissans, would it?

Best is a very strong word, with lots of contenders out there, most winning by a long way is actually the E30 BMW M3's... But Nissan did well down here, RS500 Sierra's kept them honest though when you watch the Championship races in those years. Only a few raced here in Australia, we did have a R32 GTR here, just not shown in this old video. It was production raced by Falken Tyres for many years though, super nice old beast.
