This is my second visit to the vacant houses in Hikoshima and Isaki Town. When we investigated the vacant land, we found that most of the land on Hikoshima was leased land and houses were built in private names. This is the easiest land use for landowners, but when a building becomes dilapidated and becomes vacant, there is nothing a landlord can do about it. If the landowner wants to demolish the building and clear the land, the only options are to either destroy the entire building or buy the building.
In Isaki Town, most of the land was built by landowners, so it is thought that the land was built and rented out (houses for rent).
Still, it is a strange sight to see so many empty houses clustered together.
If you count the approximate number of houses on old maps, there were 19 vacant houses in Hikoshima and 23 in Isaki Town.
