Need a medical nexus letter to service-connect your Tinnitus or Hearing Loss claim and get rated at the appropriate level in support of your VA disability claim or appeal?
In this video, Brian Reese the VA Claims Insider discuss How to Win Your VA Claim for Hearing Loss or Tinnitus.
In our experience, hearing loss is one of the most difficult VA disability claims to get service connected.
The typical VA compensation for hearing loss is a 0% service connected VA rating.
What is the difference between Hearing Loss and Tinnitus?
Tinnitus, also known as “ringing in the ear syndrome” is very different than hearing loss.
Tinnitus is normally a very subjective VA claim, and veterans either have it or they don’t.
Hearing loss, in contrast, is a very objective VA claim, and an audiologist will measure your hearing loss at various decibels and frequencies to determine your VA rating for hearing loss.
Tinnitus is the number one easiest VA disability claim to win by the way.
According to the 2018-2019 VA disability claims data, Tinnitus was the most commonly claimed disability for all Veterans.
Your Tinnitus VA Claim can only have one VA rating.
It is either 10% or nothing.
Your hearing loss VA rating depends on several factors, which are listed below.
What is the typical VA compensation for hearing loss or other ear conditions?
Tinnitus VA Rating
Tinnitus is either rated at 10 percent or nothing. There is no unilateral or bilateral factor for your Tinnitus VA rating.
Meniere’s Disease VA Rating
Veterans will receive a 100 percent rating if your Meniere’s disease includes vertigo and cerebellar gait more than once a week.
Veterans will receive a 60 percent rating if your Meniere’s disease includes vertigo and cerebellar gait one to four times per month and a 30 percent rating for less severe symptoms, which occur less than one time per month.
Inner Ear Disorders VA Rating
Inner ear disorders are very common in veterans, and these disorders can lead to nausea, dizziness, balance issues, vertigo, cerebellar gait, and even vomiting in severe cases.
Depending on the severity of your symptoms, the VA rates inner ear disorders at either 10 percent or 30 percent.
Loss of Ears VA Rating
Veterans will receive a 30 percent VA rating for the loss of one ear.
Veterans will receive a bilateral factor and a VA rating of 50 percent for the loss of both ears.
Eardrum VA Rating
Veterans will receive a 0 percent VA rating for perforated eardrum.

Tips: Be ready to provide information related to ALL noise exposure you had during service. Don't go to your exam and tell the examiner that your hearing loss and tinnitus started several years after discharge (this happens a lot and it's a slam dunk denial). Don't go to the exam and start talking about all of your post-service noise exposure.

I just had my C&P for tinnitus and all they did was have me do different types of hearing tests. The audiologist didn’t ask me any questions but I did have to turn in a form where I had to put down when I think my tinnitus started so I put down the sane date I received my CAB during OEF! I wasnt aware that hearing loss and tinnitus isn’t the same thing so now I’m thinking about submitting a claim for hearing loss!

Hey Brian, one of your employees that works for VA claims insider that is working with me on my claims literally just told me a few weeks ago that I DO NOT need a medical diagnosis for my tinnitus, because it is subjective like you said. So I filed my claim last week with only a statement and no medical paperwork on it.... sooo you should definitely get this straight with the staff.

You can file a claim for Tinnitus WITHOUT a medical diagnosis, so long as you've got subjective complaints inside your medical records somewhere, along with a strong supporting statement. It's simply recommended that you have a diagnosis, not required.

I was in US Navy 1956-60. 1958-60 I was an aviation electronics technician with VQ-1. VQ-1 aircraft were the P4M, a very noisy 4-engine patrol craft built before 1950. 50 years later I found out I was entitled to a VA tinnitus claim. And I now receive 10%. This rating was very easy to get. No one had told me that I was entitled to service connected issues.

@@VAClaimsInsider Thank you for your reply and the super articles you have done on KZfaq. My thoughts: Since I didn't hear about this VA service for 50 years, since most vets are male, and since males are the disposable sex, it is no wonder the word doesn't get out well. My Mom was a VA nurse and she said nothing. From 1970-96 I worked for DoD and no one there said anything. Nothing, nothing, nothing until my son, a vet, told me less than 10 years ago.

Nice job explaining the difference between hearing loss and Tinnitus. Worked twenty years on flight line/deck and I’m sure it is connected but I am not rated for either. Get 10% which DFAS takes right back out of my pension payment. I just checked your MOS list and it shows two-digit codes which I can only assume are the first two characters of the NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification code). The Navy does not use MOS unless something changed. Although my rating of Aviation Electronic Technician is listed, neither of my NECs match anything on the presented list. It also shows a Moderate rating instead of the Highly Probable rating of all the other Aviation Technician Ratings listed that we AT/AVs worked with on the same Flight Decks and Flight Lines. Instead we have the same Moderate rating has an Air Traffic Controller who is in the Tower while we are on the deck dodging jet exhaust with all the other Aviation Maintainers.

What medical evidence did you supply to support your claim? You can either go the HLR route or supplemental route. If you have new relevant medical evidence go the supplemental route first. Buddy letters and your own statement in support of a claim count as new relevant medical evidence. If you can get friends you served with to write first hand what happened it will go a long way. Turf Proz, Inc. Headaches, vertigo, sleep issues, etc. could possibly be attributed to tinnitus. The thing her is you HAVE TO PROVE IT. You can’t just shoot off claims from the hip all the time and think they all will stick. The more evidence like nexus letters you submit medical journals etc. will help support your claims of secondary or even primary conditions.

If you’re thinking about filing your VA Tinnitus claim as a secondary disability, the following conditions can cause or make Tinnitus worse: head and neck conditions, Meniere’s disease, depression and anxiety, PTSD, TBI, hearing loss, Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) and high blood pressure, among others. Also, medication side effects from more than 200 medications can cause/make Tinnitus worse.

I already filed my tinnitus claim. Its estimated to be decided on or before September. 10th. My doctor said I have all the symptoms of menires disease I just have to get a formal diagnosis. Would I have better luck claiming that as a primary or secondary to tinnitus? I never went to medical for those conditions. I was service connected for hearing loss because of my MOS 6156 MV22 aircraft mechanic. I also suffer from migranes which I was told can be linked to Tinnitus. As well as Anxiety and depression also made worse from the constant ringing in my ears. That has progressed into sleep issues etc. They all compound on one another. I am not asking anyone to tell me what to claim as the first comment suggested. And I have already tried to "just submit a claim" doesnt work like that. Since I didnt go to medical because it was frowned upon and I was ultimately hazed because of it. I avoided it as much as possible. I am now trying to link the issues I have to what I am already connected for. Any help would be appreciated as I am currently getting diagnosis from my primary care and specialists. But I am paying out of pocket for now until my wife's open enrollment comes around in October. I want to make the most of each doctors appointment.

Hey how are you? Got question. I am 10% service connected for Tinnitus. At my C& P exam the Doctor told me I have moderate to substantial hearing loss and he advised me to file an additional clam for that. Additionally, I was also diagnosed for Hyperacusis and Migraines and have received Nexus letters for each. So, I just filed for both of them as secondary to my service-connected Tinnitus. Now during my C & P exam for Hearing loss the Doc told me he also said he agrees with my private doc and will rule in favor of me for the Hyperacusis and Migraines but he further said his opinion on the Migraines may not count because usually a C& P exam for Migraines are performed by a Neurologist. Any thoughts ? Id love to hear your opinion. . Thank u
@VAClaimsInsider
@VAClaimsInsider Жыл бұрын
C&P exams for migraines are sometimes performed by neurologists but that doesn't necessarily mean that the rater will disregard your C&P examiner's medical opinion. Additionally, if the VA needs more evidence for your migraines, they might send you to another C&P exam or just request additional evidence from you. It's really great news that your examiner told you that his opinion is that those conditions were service-connected though!

How much does your services cost? Is it required to front?
@VAClaimsInsider
@VAClaimsInsider Жыл бұрын
Zero up-front fees! You only pay VACI once you win your claim. And our fee at the end is with new money from the VA (money you don’t currently have.) The Cost of ELITE Membership is 6x your monthly increase, owed once. Essentially, If we help you get an increase, then we split the amount of that increase 50:50 for a year. Instead of charging Veterans thousands of dollars to access our proprietary resources up-front, we decided to make these resources FREELY available to those who join our membership programs, and you only pay AFTER you win your VA disability claim AND get an increase in your VA disability compensation. If you don’t win your claim and get a higher rating, you don’t owe us a penny. If you do win and get a higher rating, our standard fee is six times (6x) the monthly increase. For example, if your VA rating before utilizing our services is 50% at $1,000 per month, and your rating after utilizing our services is 90% at $2,000 per month, your membership fee would be 6x the monthly increase, or ($2,000-$1,000) = ($1,000 x 6) = $6,000. In this example, if the lump sum option is selected, the total owed would be $6,000-$600 (10% discount) = $5,400. We also have payment plan options available.

Do not take this the wrong way but all these programs, etc. paid subscriptions mean nothing if the VA doesn't follow their own adminstrative procedures. Hence, you have to acumulate those like a vacuum over years until you get to the BVA and CAVC. Otherwise, doesn't matter one bit, if a VA rating officer or C&P examineer or VA employee just intentionally screws up your claim because what are you going to be able to do about it [NOTHING]! All this pay for this, sign up here, would mean something if things actually worked the way they were supposed to. My 20 years of VA hardships, fighting for benefits taught me this. And, using worthless VSO's in the past was the worst mistake.
