So, he orders threepio destroyed, then goes to Leia's room and sees him again, and this time decides to let Chewbacca reassemble the droid, all of this attended by flashbacks. Okay, works for me!

It never occurred to me that C-3P0 had to be dropped off at that smelting room and Vader probably was shown the droid. Makes a lot of sense, and I always wondered if he knew his old droid was part of the rebellion
