I used to live on a boat in Orange County and taught in a school that had a high Filipino population. One of my neighbors was Filipino. I said I wanted to get a big screen tv but it wouldn't fit in my car--my neighbor said "I will use my truck and get the tv for you." I didn't ask and I wasn't hinting, but I was his neighbor and he wanted to help. During parent-teacher conferences, Filipino parents brought me gifts (food!) and said "If there is any problem with my son or daughter, you call me, I will make sure they show respect." I *never* had any problems with my Filipino students. I also have friends who've married Filipina women and they are very happy in their marriages--not one divorce in the 20-30 years I've known these couples. I had many other positive experiences with Filipino immigrants in the US and could go on and on. The one thing I will say is: don't do karaoke badly in the Philippines. Not even as a joke. They take their karaoke seriously. If anyone is wondering if Filipino food is delicious: yes, most of it is. Tocino, Sinigang, Sisig, Adobo, are all tasty to the American palate.

Hello Dan ! Iโ€™ve lived in the Philippines full time since 2016 and before that half time since 2009. Your video is pretty good but there is one point about visa runs Iโ€™d like to clarify for you. There is no minimum time to exit the country and you can return from any country not just your home country. I did my only visa run in 2019 and flew to Taipei. Iโ€™m American. After landing I went through the transfer gate, checked in, took a nap in a chair for a few hours, then flew right back. Another thing is that even though you can stay for 3 years you can only drive legally on your foreign license for 6 months. After that you need something other than a tourist visa to get a Philippines drivers license. Anyway, thanks for the all the videos and info, Iโ€™ve been enjoying them a lot.

The Philippines is NOT the place to retire for a Black man. I lived in the Philippines for 5 years, and Filipinos have a problem with colorism. Sure, Filipinos adore the White man but have a problem with dark-skin people. Filipinos will even make fun of darker-skin Filipinos. Of course, skin-lightening cream is the rage. Filipinos all want to have light skin.

Ah, the Philippines, tropical paradise-with the bugs and high heat. The Philippine islands are a wonderful vacation spot, if one is on vacation, but in living here one must face every day life. Many men come to the Philippines and in six months are ready to come back to the States because they are not prepared for the downside. To help everyone get a more realistic idea of life in the Philippines I will share some of my observations. In big cities you face high crime, high pollution, tiring traffic congestion, shortages of goods and services, including quite frequent outages of power. People will have their hands out for money, and businesses will double the price if an American is buying. Inefficiency and only marginal incentives plague every branch of government and businesses. The infrastructure is woefully inadequate and not maintained well enough. In a hurry? Forget it. Be patient and wait, and wait. Want it delivered to your house in two days? Not going to happen for a while. While you are waiting you will also need to wait out frequent typhoons, at the tune of about 20 a year. The Internet is good in a few cities but not reliable in most places. A warning to single men on the lookout for a pretty Filipina-you can be scammed quite easily. Avoid the bar scene as it is a dangerous place from jealous Filipinos and from gold diggers looking for easy prey. A vision of a perpetual tropical paradise with no problems, pretty and single women everywhere, is not reality. But if you are willing to live with these inconveniences you will find that the Philippine people are very nice, and the food is pretty good. If you plan to visit the Philippines, pack a dose of reality in your suit case before you go.

35 ? No work for you here. Cost of living especially for a Westerner has gone up steeply. Dont be fooled into thinking people here mostly speak English, most of them dont. The biggest problem here, is the Westerners, Alot of them are just pains.. Most just talk about money etc. Best to come and meet a young lady here, dont use the internet.. too many ladies have done the rounds there. All in all, its still one of the better places in the World to live. Mostly no haasle off the people, most are genuinly friendly. 14 years here though, not been able to get over my fear of Cockroaches.. hehehehe...

That used to be true and it still is, at least to foreigners. Filipino hospitality to fellow Filipinos is less practiced nowadays to my observation. Going on, the special attention Filipinos give to All Foreigners and Caucasians who are all Americans to many Filipinos at least to province people is tied to American GIs' respect and good treatment of the Filipinos during WWII.

The most common reason I hear about expats choosing the Philippines over Thailand is the English language spoken in the Philippines. The long stay of 3 years on a tourist entry is a huge advantage as well. The cost of living is probably a tiny bit lower because of the minimum long stay financial requirements in Thailand. And now, starting February 10th, entry into the Philippines is far easier than the current Thai entry requirements.

Excellent points made here and absolutely correct. Regarding the weather , a lot of The Philippines is in the direct path of some of the worldโ€™s worst storms and cyclones as recently experienced in The Visayaโ€™s region. Most of the time itโ€™s fairly calm and tropical, but you need to be aware it can crank up to a dangerous level very quickly with huge property losses and some loss of life. The really bad ones are fairly rare but do still happen. This doesnโ€™t seem to cause foreigners to reconsider living there, however, just be aware.

One other point for a visa run you only have to leave and you can come right back quite often just go to KL of Sabah stay the weekend its never any problem. Some people ask if its safe there I have been everywhere there and I have never had any problem I have been to Cotabato and Zamboanga but that was a few years ago I don't think I would go now best to stay away if you don't have to be there .but having said that Mindanao it very beautiful. If you're looking for someone 30 or 40 years younger than you, you're more likely to find companionship than love. I am in Thailand with a wife 26 years younger than me. Like the Philippines, age gap relationships are common and accepted. I have to disagree that love is not a strong part of these relationships. The culture is simply different in Southeast Asia. It is hard for a westerner to understand until you experience it. Part of that cultural difference extends to the elderly just being more visible and accepted and respected in every day life than you find in countries like the US where the elderly are largely ignored.

What a retired single should also know: Filipino are extremely family oriented and obidient to their parents. Even when married to a foreigner, the family is expecting to share your wealth. Don't stay to close to the family of your wife or girlfriend to minimize their uninvited visits to bother you with their problems. If you decide, not to have children again, make that clear from the start or you might cause big disappointments. If the age gap is bigger, it's harder to be on one level. Partnership and meaningful conversations are the exception. Young partners might have more sexual appetite than what you are able to give. It's very easy to enter into a relationship, but it's a headache, if you want to get out again. Better wait some time before living together and don't engage into any common financial projects until you are absolutely sure, that you found the right one for you. Most foreigners need a year or two to get adjusted to the local culture and the way of life in the Philippines. If you have your solid income from abroad and you are fine to live a simple lifestyle, you will truly enjoy this country.

For older men looking for relationships in the Philippines there is one factor that skews the opportunities and that is that the Philippines is a Catholic country with no divorce. You may find that there are a large proportion of the available women being in their 20's. Many of the older women will have been previously married and still married even if they have been separated a long time. For men 50+ they may not want a women quite so young and who haven't experienced much adult life yet. Not a deal breaker but something to consider and be wary of.

***** Question for Dan***** Dan, Can you do a video where you project 10 or 20 years into the future. All of us, even you, will reach an age where being an "active senior" morphs into being a "housebound elderly." When all ties are cut with the home country and all of your loved ones are gone, how does one plan for that day in a foreign land when too elderly or infirmed to live alone. Believe me the day will come when hitting the bars is not a top priority. It's this final stage of life that no one ever seems to address. No other country has a duty to care for we Expats but going "home" is not an option. Other than taking the "final act" into ones own hands, (if you catch my drift) what course of action do you recommend to the millions of your viewers who will ultimately face this situation? Thanks for your consideration on this.

I have one to add, for Americans: Philippinos drive on the right side of the road. That may not sound like a big deal but most of the rest of SE Asia drives on the left. Over the course of 6 years living in Singapore I almost got splattered by a bus a half dozen times because I checked the wrong lane for traffic before crossing. Besides that, you will always find yourself trying to get into the wrong side of the vehicle. Then of course, there is driving in traffic...
@VagabondAwake
@VagabondAwake 2 ะถั‹ะป ะฑาฑั€ั‹ะฝ
I believe it is even harder than that. In most parts of SE Asia and Asia in general, people drive on both sides of the street. You have to give up on the idea that there is a land you are checking and scan the entire road at all times, front, back, and both sides. Scooters can come from nowhere and killing people on scooters is not as well accepted in SE Asia is it is in the west. I keep my head on a swivel.

A lot of people here are trying to find ways to take your money and that gets a bit annoying after awhile. Also I find most Thais to be very racist. Once you get to know them you will see it. During covid itโ€™s been worse with those avoiding serving me or even sitting near. The girls here are very difficult and super money hungry. Really moody and easy to be jealous. Also they lie a lot. Took me 3 years of dating here before I found one that I liked. Food here is so sweet. They put sugar in everything. I always put on more weight here more than any other country I lived. A lot of appartments wonโ€™t allow foreigners and when they do they will judge everything you do and talk about you non stop. Any girl they see you with becomes a talking point. Dan - serious question - I'm retired, single, male and about your age... and I am absolutely, emphatically, 100% NOT interested in a relationship of any kind with anyone - foreign, local, long term, short term, young, old or in between. Am I going to get hassled there? SE Asia generally, and The Philippines in particular, is well known far and wide as a place where older, white, western men go looking for young girlfriends and/or wives and that's totally fine if that's your thing but it's not my thing. I have not yet been to The Philippines but I've spent some time in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia and from my experience as a single, white, western man travelling in those countries - not so much Malaysia but definitely the other three - there is an automatic assumption that you're there looking for some "action." I also know a few guys who've travelled to The Philippines and had women making the same assumptions about them and making rather a nuisance of themselves to the point of in a couple of cases, having to be told to piss off. One guy even said he's not going back because of this. I do not consider myself to be anti-social nor do I wish to be offensive or make bad impressions but I enjoy my peace, quiet and solitude very much and like to be left alone. So is this going to be a problem or am I going to have to contend with local women seeing dollar signs, locking me onto their radar and be constantly explaining to them that 1) I'm not interested and 2) No, I'm NOT gay!

I'll stop you at the beginning! Some of us suffer from Island syndrome the Philippines is a great place for a vacation for a guy like me but someone who likes to get in the car and go on a long road trip and experience new places new things new restaurants new people the Philippines is a no-go. That's why I described Chiang Mai Thailand as my ideal place to retire. Loved it and wouldn't live anywhere else

@@namvet1968 there are several International universities and a large International expat population. Lots of folks do not speak English and get along fine in Chiang Mai. Obtw lots of different kinds of foreign food options because there are foreign experts that open restaurants they are delicious. But of course Thai food is also delicious much more delicious than Filipino food

I don't speak a single word of Thai or Filipino. But I loved living in both places. If the person standing next to you doesn't speak English, usually the person standing next to them does. Plus, you can use Google Translate in live time if you get in a difficult situation. English should not be why you do or do not go anywhere in my opinion.

@@davidwilliams-wg9xo English is only a second language of the Filipinos Not their native tongue and that said, the general population would never ever be at par with native English speakers when it comes to steady conversations, Never will, and this applies to any nationality whose native tongue is Not English. I think when people say Filipinos speak English, it definitely means, Many of them speak at least the very basic and understandable English compared to Asian neighbors with the exception of Singaporeans and Malaysians.

There is a couple of negatives that you've failed to mention.....corruption and safety of ex pats. To demonstrate when I first arrived in the Philippines in Cebu City I was having a quiet coffee and someone overheard my accent (I'm English) when speaking to the waitress, the gentlemen then decided came over and introduced himself....a fellow elderly English man....he lived in cebu for the past 5 years. I asked if he liked it in cebu....he loved it. But then I asked him if it was safe....he answer shocked me......in his own words "I've been mugged 4 times, and kidnapped once".....and that made me think about my future plans. The other main drawbacks which are subjective is the poverty and the cuisine....I prefer the other SE Asian countries for food. That saying....ive never seen such beautiful scenery in terms of beaches ever....and I've been to a few countries.

Malaysia doesnโ€™t have a good retirement visa. the mm2h program has deposit and foreign source income requirements most either canโ€™t or wonโ€™t want to meet. And I doubt they will let you stay indefinitely on a tourist visa like PI does.
