I have been here for 3 years now as an English teacher and have dedicated my channel to showing the beauty of tier3 /tier 4 cities and rural parts of Vietnam. @DanielCunningham_Gia-na-dai Daniel one thing I learned about the Vietnam War is the lying by our political and military leaders. Most of the people who fought against us, north and south weren't communists. They were freedom fighters...like their ancestors. Some 800 years ago, or more, they defeated an army, and navy of 500,000+ sent by Kubla Khan. What happened to the minority groups of Vietnam, after the war happens in many wars. When the Revolutionary War ended in 1782 those who were loyal to the British were brutalised. Their property was torched, or destroyed. Violence against them was widespread, even death. Many fled to Canada. Growing up we were told we were helping to free the Vietnamese people. It's BS. After the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu- the Geneva Accords called for free elections in all of Vietnam in 1956. The US scuttled it. Dwight Eisenhower said they couldn't allow it because Ho Chi Minh would win 90% of the vote in the North, and South. I got to know a woman from Cam Lo ville in Quang Tri Province. She sold Coca-Colas. We talked when I was at certain places. She had her three kids with her. After a few weeks she asked why I came to Vietnam. I said 'your president asked us to'. She said 'he's not our president. Your president make our president'. That was true. CIA coups, rigged elections, crushing the opposition...etc. She then asked 'who were the Redcoats'? I said the British. She then asked 'why did Americans fight them'? I said 'they had to get them out to be free and independent'. I felt the irony at that moment. She said 'you don't get mad at me'. Twice. I said 'no, we talk. You say what you feel.' Then, she leaned closer, and said 'Americans Redcoats in Vietnam'. She was right, and it got me thinking. In 1935 Major General Smedley D. Butler wrote 'War is a Racket'. He told the real reasons for wars he had been in, and led. Haiti was for the 'sugar interests', Mexico for the oil companies. China, 1927, for Standard Oil (Rockefeller company), Cuba for the National City Bank boys, Nicaragua for Brown and Brothers banking... Daniel I liked the story about the food. I was at Charlie 2 my first time in Nam. Above Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province. We Marines provided the security with day patrols, and night ambushes. The base was army artillery. They got good hot food. We ate c-rats. Our officers ate the Army's hot chow. They had cooks! Our squad leaders asked our LT, and Captain if we could too at noon meal. They said we had our rations. People were pissed. I didn't know anything till Hall came up to me and asked if I had my gas mask. I said no. I was told my 1st day it's useless. Extra weight. Get rid of it ect. My position was at the front gate. Concertina wire. During the middle of the noon meal a gas grenade accidentally landed in the middle of guys enjoying hot chow. When they saw it, and when it went off, food trays went flying in the air, and they ran out in panic. Was one of the funniest things I saw.

I was there 68-69 pole lineman for the army. I was thinking it's funny that no one wanted to go back then and now it's a tourist destination. Spent 18 months in Bangkok after Nam

Brian gave a secret: local, local and local. Try to live in home stay or local hotel not famous hotel. Go to market or small eatery instead of restaurant. Drink coffee at small shop instead of famous bar or cafe. Vietnamese people are willing to help you if you are in trouble. Trust me, after 2 weeks, you will have many local friends, they will show you the best, most delicious but cheap places. You can save 20-50%.

Im Vietnamese but i have a question: You want a very cheap service in your country & but want high salaries . ? Or The doctor in your country should have the very low salaries compare to you?. Like the way in VN( for Việt Nam citizen) people want more profits from gov healthcare insurance but with only 50 usd fee every year.

I had a tooth, which needed a crown. My Houston dentist wanted 2K. My Blue Cross Blue Shield only paid 40%, it was $1,200 out of pocket for me. My dentist was still working with BCBS to get the approval before work could be started. Before the approval came I took a vacation trip to Vietnam where I visited KangNam clinic, which was in Saigon. Kangnam was Korean owned but the dentists actually working my tooth were Vietnamese. They were excellent, professional and pleasant. The procedure started around 1PM on first day I came in. The next day I returned around the same time and the crown was installed within an hour. They issued me a 15-year warranty certificate. I could come back anytime I had any issue or needed adjustment. That was two years ago and I have not had any reason to come back. The cost for the crown was $250. It was the best dental service ever for me.

Depends on what they get. Elective stuff yes but for Aussie health care it’s pretty much unmatched for hardcore stuff like cancer and hip surgery etc.

The poor people are not hungry because (1) the government don't allow beggars or homeless on the streets (2) local people support feeding the poor (3) oversea Vietnamese send money to the poor and the zero dollar restaurants

LOL...I may be coming in the August/September timeframe. My lease expires in the middle of August and I'm 80 to 90% sure I'm going to give it go. Early retirement seems so much nicer than working till I'm in my mid-70s.

In 1968 it was the Tet offensive. People were running for their lives. It was basic survival one day at a time. They had no time and opportunity to chase the dollars as they do now. I did not see a single overweight person in 1968 other than a few ethnic Chinese merchants in the Cho Lon area. The vast majority then subsisted at near or on starvation diet. Per the World Bank data posted on line, Vietnam GNI was 208 billion in 1995. In 2022 the GNI stood at 1.06 trillion. There is no data available for 1968 but keep it in mind when the war ended in 1975 the country economically collapsed. You can imagine how much has changed for economic betterment since 1968.

If you live strictly on retirement income and not have to worry about making a living, the best place for your golden years is DaLat. It is in the mountain area and was developed by the French during their colonial occupation to be the resort town for ranking govt officials and the wealthy minority. The natural beauty is awesome. Most of all is the weather. You wouldn't see a single A/C unit in the entire town. It is like living in air-conditioned environment year round. It is very quiet unlike Saigon and Hanoi. People are extra friendly and no worry about purse snatchers. It is not a place for younger crowd due to no sunbathing, so partying other than a few music festivals at Xuan Huong lake right in the city center twice to three times a year. It is a city of flowers and every other year you get to enjoy the flower festival.

@@debbiegaskins Asians in general do not like the sun.....especially females. It is a common sight to see females wearing masks and long covers over their legs to avoid sunburn. Being ghost white is a big plus not a minus as in western culture. On the beach you'd see Asian swimmers in the middle of the day are far and few in between. Only late in the afternoon, past 5pm, you get to see Asian "sun-worshippers" coming out in drove....LOL.

Disagree. This picture of ceaseless anger in America "all the time for any reason" is concocted by media. I do agree there is more observable conflict in public view. And even though I know the media greatly exaggerates the problem it still creates an exaggerated view of America in my mind...and I live here! Foreigners looking on us no doubt get the exaggerated view. Our REAL problem is still obscured by media. Our economy...and the workd economy for that matter...is one giant Ponzi scheme. This is not a fault of fundamental capitalism. It's plain and simple theft.

It a 90 days visa now, there is no retirement visa yet.

If you have been around me long enough, you know Vietnam is one of my favorite countries in the world. But Vietnam has no retirement visa. Yet, every time we visit Vietnam, we meet many older Western people who have been here for years. Many of you asked why I didn’t ask Mark what visa he has. I have never met anyone that is overstaying a visa in Vietnam and Mark is not overstaying. Everyone I meet has permission to be in Vietnam. If you are a rule follower, you should only follow the official rules to stay in a country. That is what I recommend (and that is what Mark has done). But if you ever fall in love with a country and want to stay ... ask a few expats off camera how they stay in a country without overstaying their visa. Many people all over the world find ways to stay in countries they love. But if it doesn’t sound perfectly legit to me, I never promote it on my channel ... for two reasons. One, I don’t want to disrupt the lives of older people who are happily living in a country somewhere by publicly sharing controversial solutions that could get shut down if they became widely known because of me. Two, I don’t want to publicly encourage a large number of people to use the same controversial solutions ... it might embarrass officials and place me on a shit list. Instead, do exploratory visits, ask ex-pats questions off-camera, decide where you want to live and pick the best way for you personally to make that happen. That said ... I will be sharing more details about the various ways people are staying in Vietnam long-term as I learn more off-camera from the expats I meet here. We met an expat here that has been here since 1991 and he says it is way safer here now than it was 30 years ago.

I would say overall that small towns are more friendly buy only slightly. The whole place was nice to us. :-)

Viet here, born and bred in the North then moved to Saigon and I can say yes, in general. People from the South are generally more open minded and aid back, while Northerners are much more reserved.
