Nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing champ Valentino Rossi talks of a secretive, pivotal decision in 2006 when he earned an opportunity with Ferrari’s Formula 1 team, but ultimately decided his heart was in MotoGP. Rossi remembers sleeping at the racetrack before his trial race and pressure from his mother and inner circle to make the jump to F1.

In my opinion Valentino did an incredibly brave and wise decision: when people push you to make a decision, you should make a decision on your own terms. Vale did and I am sure it was the right decision for his career and for himself. In addition, he has driven an F1 car after all.

He is the goat of moto gp and a pure racer at heart who could never take politics of F1 … he could not go and race with a car in a bottom team he would be 2 steps behind
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. He could have - and I am not saying should have - but in the history of F1, this is what most champions have done. You prove yourself in a B team which is less risky for the team as well as for the driver as they find their feet with less scrutiny on them. Max started in Toro Rosso, Schumacher in a Jordan, Senna, Mika, Lauda all started in B-teams. Hamilton started in McLaren and almost won in his rookie season but he also had a lot of F1 test miles under his belt before that season. I guess they could have possible done the same for Rossi. Max is considered a prodigy, the biggest of talents by many and Red Bull pride themselves on taking chances and giving young drivers a chance and even they didn't want him in the big team right away (testing in recent spec cars is extremely restricted these days, so that might have influenced that choice). Also, until two years ago historically Ferrari used to never take young drivers and had this whole thing of you having to really earn your chance. So, maybe that also played a part. Needless to say, it would have been cool to see what he could do, and you may very well be right about the politics of it all. Still, one season in a Sauber if he really wanted to do F1 would have been a small price to pay and probably the wise choice if he had wanted it.
@JRsmith.
@JRsmith. 2 жыл бұрын
@@AntiVaganza yes ik you prove my point looool
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza 2 жыл бұрын
@@JRsmith. If I proved it, then your point must be that most of the champs of f1 were not “pure racers” since they actually could live with a bit of time in a b-car. For the fun of it: Your pure racer argument could easily have been used against him, too. If you’re the best and that pure, why not suck up a season in a Sauber in order to get a chance at proving you’re the best? So, no, I didn’t prove your point. As for F1 being full of games, give me a break - any sport at the top level is. And if that’s why he stayed away, I get that. But not that he couldn’t do one season in a b team. And actually, I don’t even think that’s what he is saying - that’s what you’re saying. It seems to be that he was saying there were no clear promises that even if he did well in the first season he would get the A seat the following. And if that’s true, that does sound like a shitty deal. And I would surely understand why he wasn’t comfortable with it.
@JRsmith.
@JRsmith. 2 жыл бұрын
@@AntiVaganza You are misunderstanding my original message. Valentino with minimal to no karting or open wheel experience going into F1 with a small team is just a recipe for disaster. (Yes he is very talented but still no match) Valentino know’s this, so he has to turn down the money of F1 (politics and sponsors). What you are saying is all correct and yes many sports at top level have some degree of “politics” but none to the degree of F1 where not only talent and performance are taken into account but how many t-shirts you can sell and how much sponsorship $ you can bring to the table. That is just motorsport though.

@1:40. IMO this is what probably influenced his decision as much as anything. He would have started at Toro Rosso or similar and there was no guarantee he would ever get to Ferrari. In hindsight this was a wise decision as Vettel would have been his teammate. Rossi could have been progressing very well, but in comparison to Vettel some may have discounted his future prospects. It is not unlike 2009 at Yamaha in World Superbike with two rookies. Ben Spies looked like a man among boys in his only season in WSBK, his teammate finished fifth in the championship and was sacked at the end of the year. In any other situation Tom Sykes' rookie season would have been seen as a success (he was champ in 2011 with Kawasaki), but when your teammate wins half the races and the championship it is tough to get a fair evaluation of your season with your employer.

My worry would be that it would be like the time Jordan tried to go into Major Leage Baseball. Rossi was 0.6 from Schumacher but it would have been a whole other experience to be in a race with other experienced drivers. Jordan was OK in double A and did "show potential" and could have "made it on the roster" for the white sox. With Jordans dedication and work ethic he could have been good, but not a big time player. Would it be the same with Rossi? The world will never know.

Yes Loeb did it in 2007 with Renault and 2008 with Red Bull. With Red Bull. The Red Bull was an RB4 but modified for the next season rule change. So not exactly the same set up. There were 17 drivers and he finished 8th. According to the race engineer from Red Bull (Daniele Casanova) he was really impressive and around the middle of the pack in that day although it was hard to gauge accurately as everyone was driving with different set ups. Seb said himself that it was hard for him to brake at the right time, sometimes he was too early sometimes too late and said that nailing the right timing for the braking he thought it was the hardest thing for someone new to f1. Red Bull was apparently impressed and offered him to race at Abu Dhabi on the next season but the FIA never granted him the "super license".

Michael Schumacher “ I was stunned by him , he was so fast I did 50 laps he did 43 the times were so close to me and Felipe (Massa) Schumacher 1.11.6 Felipe 1.11.9 Rossi 1.12.3 I’m so glad he didn’t join F1 , you can’t have any personality, In f1 the driver makes less impact on overall performance, the politics of the sport , the age range of the sport , the media training .

Going from motor-racing to car-racing and being competitive is absolutely possible. Going from racing cars to racing motor bikes and being competitive is absolutely impossible. Put any MotoGP rider in a race car and he do lap-times pretty close to the professional car drivers. Put a Formula one driver on a MotoGP bike and he be miles away from competitive lap-times.

Just like Jeff Ward in motocross. 7 national championships and then switched to supermoto and won a couple more. Then switched to Indy cars and almost won the daytona 500. He was more than competitive...

For Rossi, a move to F1 would have been like his move to Ducati.. he knew this and stayed with MotoGP.

Yeah Vale, have a test every month and express a real public interest in an imminent F1 move, then criticize Yamaha for signing Lorenzo at the same time. 🙄

He would have been a good f1 driver. But he’s gone down as the greatest Moto gp racers ever. Rather than just a good f1 driver
