Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen is reviewed by Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and William Bibbiani (Crave Online).
Read what other critics had to say: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/vale...
VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

It's interesting that they say "Star wars!" is not presenting us with new stuff and this movie is, when the "Valérian and Laureline" comic was one of the George Lucas's biggest source of inspiration for Star Wars in the first place.

I mean Chris Tucker doesn't bug me in most movies, and yeah he is obnoxious in Fifth Element, but he's got competition from a lot of things. The "opera singer", Gary Oldman half the time, Leeloo (?), some of the editing. I do find Oldman's reaction funny when the gold (?) isn't in the box but overall it's all a bunch of ado about nothing. And I agree with the people who say it hasn't aged well.

I like Dane DeHaan, and so does my boyfriend. He's very appealing as the average man actor, as many normal guys can see themselves in his place. We don't need a big name heart throb to do this role, and as someone who's new to the comic, DeHaan brought me into the film, and had me stoked for months to see the finished product.

OMG, thanks for the retro call outs to some of my favorite movies. These troupes and molds of SCI-FI are both holding back and encouraged the True Science Fiction. There is a whole family of "Grandparents of the Space Opera" that read like this film looks. A little history - Speed Racer, Fifth Element, Barbarella, Wizard of Oz, Metropolis.

Saw this today, I like their review too. Ultimately for me Valerian is a hyper-enjoyable example of how much more invested you can be in a movie when you follow one of the stars on Instagram! Cara Delevingne can be interpreted as sucking in this movie (equilaterally in a few scenes at least), but also as delivering things that no one else can (as attested by her myriad followers on instagram of which I am happily one!) =) A more detailed opinion on the actual movie: I am probably almost completely foreign to Euro-sci-fi sensibilities, and then even more so in comic-book form, so couldn't catch any references of the many that might be there. The movie's taste of cheeziness made me feel like there was too much going on. The cheeze I guess could be seen as blatantly OG Star Trek (in hyper-color). Contrastingly The Fifth Element I felt had a sweeping and involving taste of editing. Valerian has speed... like you're reading a comic book fast! Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending, both mentioned in the review here, are to me both films made by people with a more informed sense of intellectual delivery. Speed Racer has a similar speed to Valerian. But it also has an emotive balance in scene transitions that doesn't fall flat for me. Jupiter Ascending is far more stylistically muted than Valerian or SR. But it is a smart, expansive, and bookish sci-fi. All 3 to me are a great watch! ..But I only have 1 movie actor in my tiny Instagram addiction! Cara is a thrilling personality, who is in a unique way holding sway over an age-group about a decade below my gen-X Kurt Cobain generational wash-out (yes their "places" are different and everything else and all that). But I LOVE what she comes up with over and over again. Fan! Edit: Do I like what she likes? not necessarily. Do I like the glorification of a consumerist/exclusivist society? nope. But still... I assume I'm just stuck on her Tolstoy-War and Peace, "intelligent face."-words and manner.
@finalmattasy
@finalmattasy 7 жыл бұрын
-then again, if there is no God, how do you motivate people to make contributions to society besides offering them exclusivist/consumerist privileges? I think if I was Valerian I'd try to marry Laureline, but mess up the salvation of an alien race because I was laughing at myself and her too much. Edit: 3D is a much better experience, the corny increases with a repeat view, as does some effectiveness. On the second view, I can see Cara D as having put in a solid performance almost throughout. Her poorer scenes suffer from pacing and dialogue more than they do her acting. I liked Dane DeHaan more this time as well. Final verdict: it's an enjoyable bad movie. Unless you liked Speed Racer and dig pulpy cornball sci-fi. If so, then this is movie gold!

This movie was a fun time along with being visually mesmerizing. I agree that Dane DeHaan was miscast, more for his appearance than his talent. I have read the translated comic, "The Empire of a Thousand Planets", but actually was more informed by the prologue of this movie than the comic itself. Reviewers are correct, if you liked The Fifth Element you will appreciate this movie. However this film is NOT as bat-s**t crazy or cheaply weird as Jupiter Ascending.

I'm making a huge mistake watching all the clips, trailers and reviews for this movie... Now I expect the CGI to look better than real life. And I already know the story, that's it's weak point. It's the only comic he could have made the first movie about though, because otherwise NOBODY would understand the universe. This movie was an introduction to the universe, so the world building is the most important part of it.

Dane Dehaan is a great actor. Just watch A Cure For Wellness and see. But I have to agree that Luc Besson chose actors of the wrong age. Valerian should be pushing 40, based on his character profile. But, I get it, Dan is flavour of the month, so let's pick him. They're trying to go for a younger audience, but most Sci-Fi fans are in their 40s or 50s. Not everyone, obviously, but if you grew up on Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars, then you will love this movie, like Bibbs. Hipsters like Alonso? Not so much.

So, let me get this straight, the young girl dies and chooses Valerian as a host. The remaining survivors learn about us humans, master space travel, go to alpha, sense Valerian and they do all this by the time Valerian goes on his mission at the beginning of the film. That dosenot make any sense.

I think this movie was simultaneously very ambitious and very safe. I found it very predictable plot wise and in terms of the imaginative world building I was angry that it didn't let me stay in one place long enough to appreciate anything. The sequence at the market was probably the most interesting thing in the film for me. The Rihanna part was cool but it went absolutely no where and was wasted. His little mission to rescue her from the primitive fat aliens was so hokey and pointless. The main alien species was kinda cool but also way way too uncanny valley for my taste. And yes their chemistry was just not good. I think they are both okay actors but they didn't work romantically at all. Also I thought most of the writing was atrocious. I think this would work so much better as a TV show.
