While perhaps better known as "The Hogan Family," the show started out as "Valerie." When Valerie Harper was released from the show following a contract dispute, the show soldiered on under a succession of titles, finally settling on "The Hogan Family." The show had taken on a different feel by that point, so the early "Valerie" episodes are a special treat!

Jason Bateman is probably why NBC figured they could do the show without Valerie Harper even though the show was called Valerie. Even in the first season that Harper was on the show it was becoming clear Bateman was the real star of it. The show definitely involved in something different after Harper left. They definitely increase the role for the actor playing the father

It's so sad what happened with Valerie Harper; getting fired and all that. Call me crazy but I think if she was still with that show it would still be on today. And I don't mean in reruns. Like Mary Tyler Moore, Valerie Harper I think has something special about her that makes her just stand out and deserve to be in front of the TV camera all the time. I send her my love and prayers in her battle with her sickness.

@jldraw

I don't know if it will get either a DVD or digital release anytime soon. The problem is that while it is a Miller-Boyett sitcom, it's an early M/B sitcom made several years before they struck gold with their hit parade of shows for ABC in the late eighties. Therefore it doesn't share the same company with those later sitcoms which an entire generation of kids grew up on. Additionally it was one of those shows that fell off the map as the series went along especially in terms of creative which suffered a huge blow once Harper was let go, as she was a huge creative force behind the scenes during the first two seasons. It didn't help that her replacement, Sandy Duncan while good enough to keep the show from being cancelled was never able to fill Harper's shoes in front of the camera in terms of what she was able to bring to the series. The problem with "Valerie/Hogan Family" is that the while first two seasons are essential and enjoyable viewing, the rest of the series fails more times than not to meet that standard which could be the reason why it's never been given a broad release.

@112774053714295422267 Wrong. It's called negotiations. Let's see. She already signed the short form of her contract. She already filmed the third-season premiere. She showed up. Then they fired her. They used the typical misogynistic BS excuses against her (menopausal, hormonal, etc.) as well as the excuse that only a long form would be acceptable. She settled with NBC and won a $1.4 million ($2.87 million in 2016 dollars) court ruling against Lorimar, thus setting a legal precedent that short-form contracts are valid. What's further wrong here is that the producers Thomas Miller and Andrew Boyett stopped allowing Hogan Family reruns for over 20 years and counting, just so Valerie wouldn't make money off of residuals. Edie McClurg who played neighbor Mrs. Poole said this. The show is finally returning in spring 2017 on Antenna TV, supposedly.

"In the heart of EVERY family..." except mine. These theme songs always made me sad back then. Most of the shows I watched as a kid in the '80s had theme songs about the "love" of families. I never knew any "love" in my family. I thought it existed only in television until I went to college and met the families of other students and spent time with them. It was a bizarre shock, seeing that the TV sitcom families are closer to reality than I'd ever thought, that there do exist in the world families that don't hate each other.

Damn good to see I'm not the only one who remembers this show. For years there was a dark cloud as to what really happened that got Valerie Harper fired from this show. It went back and forth from - Valerie being hard to get along with to Sandy Duncan and Valerie didn't like each other and had some sort of falling out earlier in their career which proven to be wrong. Glad to see her other interview on another You Tube page where she addresses the truth to her being wrongfully fired. I'm so glad I as a young black kid back then was exposed to so many different forms of entertainment that was appreciated by the public. But I'm so sad to hear yesterday Friday evening that my beloved Rhoda had passed on. But she definitely left quite an infallible and an impressionable mark on the entertainment world touching millions of lives in ages and races beyond the imagination.

This was "VALERIE" for it's first two seasons on NBC (1986-1987) before it was renamed "VALERIE'S FAMILY: THE HOGANS" for it's third season, and "THE HOGAN FAMILY" for it's remainder on NBC until Spring of 1990. That same year, the show later moved to CBS to finish it's run that ends in the summer of 1991.

Here’s an interesting bit of trivia: The actresses that portrayed Valeries two best friends in the first season Mrs. Poole and Annie Actually portrayed the same character. Eddie McClurg Who played Mrs. pool played Grace the secretary in Ferris Buelleers Day off the movie And the actress who played annie played Grace in the short lived TV version of the show. They kept Mrs. pool but got rid of annie after Valerie Harper was let go
