Got raided by trolls who destroyed half my house. As soon as I rebuilt it, I get raided by the swamp. Running around naked with a stone axe is not fun. Died twice and lost 5 skill points. This game is brutal sometimes. Lol

For defending against the greydwarf raids I keep beehives outside my front door, it’s funny AF when bees kill them

For the drakes, I built very tall stone tower in the middle of my base and made a sort of archer's last stand in it only accessible by portal with chests full of resources, a bed, and plenty of cover. I also created "windows" and put spikes around them. They don't seem to have a huge effect but it looks cool. The rest of my base is on a lower level (but not ground) built around this tower and can be accessed through a ladder. Then finally on the ground level, I have my farms surrounded by a moat and also walled off. I have been hesitant to add a bridge since the game does not seem to have a mechanism for raising or lowering them so instead I use my boat to enter and leave the base. Oh and yeah it's also by the ocean. Basically an impenetrable town

Well, the best defense against these raids is actually to live on an island. Find a rather small island and cover it with spwan-blocking structures (fires, benches, wards, torches etc.). Mobs cannot spawn in a radius around those, and they cannot spawn in the water. If you cover the area, you will not get any raids (possibly except for the drakes). Island bases have other advantages, of course, like easy access to the sea and open water routes to all directions.

Make a hole around the base, jump to get inside, make a bridge but break 1 piece so NPC can't walk to the base, u can quickly make/break that piece if u need to cross it with something, now the only thing that can get inside is flying NPC. Make many workbenches around the base so NPC doesn't spawn inside the base, and that lets quick repair walls if need. Drake and Deathsquito is the only real danger because they can fly.

I was raided once while mining copper in the black forest. I had a workbench and a campfire nearby, and I had the sheltered buff because I was underneath a boulder, and I guess the game thought it was a base :D

Just break the bridge over the moat when the raid starts lol. Can't do shit after that. Also stone walls with battlements allow you to hide behind them and shoot the furlings.

FYI I was just exploring the Mountain Biome not near a base and I spawned the wolf raid 'You are being hunted'. I was attacked by 20 or so wolves.. took a bunch of them out before they finally killed me. So just FYI I think that raid can happen while you are not near a base. Also my home base was attacked by the Drake raid. I was safe inside my building, but they killed my herd of tame boars out side in the pen and destroyed a number of my bee hives. Definitely a nasty attack.

Just now seeing this guide, almost a year later and very helpful. I just recently started playing Valheim, although I've owned it for a year almost. Never played past the 1st boss until this recent playthrough. Didn't even know these were things in the game, other than the grey dwarfs attacking. Very useful, keep up the great work.

I really wish Eikthyr's raid lasted longer and included deer. It's great in the early game to essentially have three foods delivered right to your door, but deer are a pain in the ass to hunt and it'd be a cool twist to see these usually passive creatures go berserk by command of their god, king, leader, whatever!

I dug a giant mote around my base right next to the swamp and the ocean so it would go pretty deep and still fill up. Then I harpooned two sea serpents and dragged them into the mote. Now when I get attacked by things they go ape shit on whatever comes around. Including me.

From my experience, Raids are centered around workbenches. I was raided on a bridge i was building once, and since my base has like a dizen of those they usually target the one i'm closest to. You can tell by figuring out the centre of the red circle.

The worst is when the raid happens while I'm out exploring :^) See, I'm that building-focused fool who makes little exploration bases where I stay at for like, one night, and SOMETIMES, a raid just freakin happens there. It's literally a less-than-a-day-old base, not really made for being defended AT ALL, and yet, they find me. This has happened a couple of times now. I create these little bases so I can have a "safe" spot to make food, repair my tools, store some junk, and skip the night while I explore the world. It's reasonable enough, right? I also just really enjoy building. Yes, I should probably just go for setting up portals instead, but the thing is that I just do not have many surtling cores yet. I can't place portals all over the place. Not yet. So instead, my tiny micro bases get bullied by draugrs and skeletons. Sometimes even trolls. Yay.

"Raids only happen at your base" you're telling me when I was being hunted in the middle of the plains was a bug? Thank God cause the deathsquitos and goblins weren't enough the game spawned 9 wolves on me too.

- The raid counter only ticks down while you're inside the red circle. If you run outside of that area, you're basically making it last longer than it should. - If you've built a large village with all your workbenches near the center... monsters could spawn inside your walls. (Not literally). If the wards works as they should, maybe that'll prevent them from spawning inside? - I think the story-based raids level up not for each boss you've defeated, but rather on each boss trophy placed on the sacrificial stones? Had anyone tested that yet? I just defeated Moder and just hanged her head in my base. Still waiting for a story-based raid.

Not just a multi-player server bug, as I had the Ground is Shaking event spawn while I was exploring in the Black Forest, and my base was in the Meadows. The event circle spawned around my player

The first time I was raided it was by greydwarfs and a troll. The troll estroyed everything as I panicked and ran away. It was definitely a learning experience 😂

Last raid broke through my wide cart gate. Thinking now I'll put thatch roofing above entry points so they don't get weakened by weather.

Tip when building a new base don’t put down a bed until you’re ready to defend against raids

You just have to have a house with bed and workshop that’s all and you can be raided. I was stranded and out exploring an unexplored huge island island after killing 2nd boss all solo last night. Made a house and bed. Got raided by swamp creatures that night while chilling in my little cabin for the night. Draugers they were and they really wanted in!

Breed wolves, lots of wolves, get 2star if you can and just make your base crowded with them, they are efficient enough for ground units, but those drakes will be an issue. Put 3 wolves on follow, feed them and just start breeding them around your base. Remember once the wolf cub grow up you need to click follow and then click to stay, otherwise it will chase targets way too far.

I hope it’s a bug they patch soon. I would’ve agreed with the whole ‘Base’ thing, until today. I was on an island, large enough for maybe 2 small houses. I set several workbenches around the perimeter to build a temp base close to the swamp so I could easily reach Bonemass. The only thing on this tiny island was the workbenches (to cover the area), a portal to my main base, and my ship. No bed, no fire. I barely started cutting trees when ‘The Ground is Shaking’ popped up! This was only 2 in game days from the Swamp raid on another temp base, and 3 days from the last Troll raid! I’m more than a little annoyed at the moment, needless to say. Love the game, but over the sheer multitude of raids. Especially the Troll kind! At least mix it up a little! Going to be tough fighting these guys on an island solo...and NOT lose my exploring ship in the process.

I had a dozen or so 2-star tamed boars. Trolls killed them ALL. At least they left us all the boar meat.

I got a troll raid in a copper mine with just a work bench and campfire, no bed. I was inside the deposit, so they couldn't get at me. I was tempted to go topside and get them to do some mining for me, but I didn't have a decent shield.

I had a Wolf raid happen to me in a mountain biome and the only item anywhere near me was a single camp fire (and it wasn’t THAT close at all). I just ran out of the red circle and the wolves didn’t chase me.

Couple of errors (whether due to a bug or not I couldn't say) firstly I've had a greydwarf raid on a base that had (quite deliberately) no bed in it, and secondly we just had a foul smell from the swamp raid prior to killing Bonemass but after killing The Elder. This is on a server rather than single player world.

Reading from the comments and judging on my own experience, it's possible that the wolf and other non-story raids possibly like the troll raids too can happen within their native biome regardless of base.

I had raids happen when mining nodes. I setup a bench under the node and a campfire to get the sheltered bonus. No bed whatsoever. Had 2 trolls help me mine copper nodes this way or hordes of wolves run into silver pits for easy loot.

About ten minutes after killing Moder, my brothers and I got raided by Fulings. We had stone walls, but it was still surprising how soon the raid came after a boss fight.

I got raided 2 days into the creation of a new world. It was the Eikthyr raid, but still.

Is there a way for you to turn up your brightness when you record so we can see in the dark?

I was already thinking about a mote around my base but after watching this video I'm sure I'm gonna do it. I had that swamp raid happen to me and my friend around our camp in the swamp. We got owned 😅😅. Also; I want that poison resistance mead but the mats and amounts are a pain to get. 😒😒

We have a pretty awesome stone base and as soon as we show up on our watchtower the trolls from the trolls event basically take one look at us and start running lol. dunno if it's where our base is or the terrain or intended when they see how badass you are but we laugh every time

I've had a base without a bed (just setup a smeltery in the black forest since I can't portal metals) get raided. No bed anywhere nearby, just a workshop.

we have had all but the Drake attacks, we took on Mode quickly after Bonemass. We were being hunted while sailing in the ocean!

I've built my base on a small island a good distance from any main land and covered it in workbenches so no spawns can happen on the island. I get raid events but no mobs show up to my base. I am currently about to take on bonemass so irk if this will change.

I just built up terrain in a big circle as high as it would go. then dug a moat as deep as i could all the way around it. Built my base in the center 3 stories high. Bridge across the moat that I could quickly break in the event of a raid. Ive been raided like 10 times since I finished construction. Trolls, draugr, surtlings, greydwarfs. They cant even reach the base much less damage it since they dont damage terrain in any way. I just go up stairs and shoot everything with a bow. It looks like the Jurassic park model from Lost World.

Does the raid spawn when you are not near your base? Also if you just delete your workbench, would that stop the raids?

it should probably be said - raids last for the 120 seconds etc of you being in/close enough to the red circle. Die, respawn at a previous base half way across the map, spend 15 minutes getting back and the raid is still in progress. (not counting an earlier bug where it never ended until logging out and back in). Also - I find if you moat around a couple of pick axes deep - you don't even need the walls, although that depends on how large an area you are covering. So you can have a wonderful, peaceful vista.

Got the skeleton raided with only a workbench up while starting to establish Ashlands base.

I have no moat, no wall (don't like how they look) , just a huge area covered with buried/hidden workbenches. I mark a spot at the limit of the workbench area and just go there to fight when i see the raid message. Oh and i have another area with a huge pack of tamed wolves i can lure them into if i get overwhelmed.

I put a portal inside of some high walls next to a campfire and a workbench. I got a troll raid without even having a roof or a bed 😂

I get hunted all the time in the Plains while exploring sometimes I get hunted in the mountains as well.

No mention as to how the raid timer doesn't continue while ur location is not within the raid marker on the map.. I lured 2 trolls away to kill them only to have the raid reset when I returned this happened 3 more times before I lost the 7th and 8th trolls without killing them and returned to base

One time my friend and I were trying to make a base in one of those underground bunkers in the mountain. While he was there we got a foul smell from the swamp on the underground bunker. They all died to drakes

The trolls in this video were trying to defend you from the contagious air.

I was actually sailing in my longship a bit off of the coast and I got hunted by the wolves! I was very confused why the event would be triggered while away from my base

A bed is not required to be raided. My gf and I were at a little mining outpost we had set up next to a copper and all we had was the workbench and fire set up there. The red circle actually happened there at the mining camp and we had to defend it. We did have beds down back at our base but nowhere near the mining camp.

I was raided by the Surtlings just as I finished prepared myself to go raid Burial grounds, for Surtling Cores. I was like "Sweet!!" I still went tomb raiding tho. But bonus cores! The attacking skeletons managed to break down my pig pen gate as it was, and still is outside my base, for the moment. My piggies ran out, attacked the skellys, and all of them died. Found some more, working on taming them. NOT looking forward for the Fuling raid. Haven't defeated mommy drake yet so its cool! Gonna set up spikes all around my base!

I axed a bigass moat around my base and these raids were super weird.. greydwarves and trolls were just standing at the edge of the moat looking clueless. Arrowed them down and collected the loot.

I had a wolfs raid while exploring the mountain, and I played on solo world, was not playing on a multiplayer server, only got 1 raid outside exploring, and of course valheim beeing valheim, all happens while figthing a golem and 2 dragons, I mannage to survive cuz I had a big hole neear by where I mined silver, so got to the pit, and the wolfs got it difficult to get to me, so I could focus on the dragons first, then the wolfs, and finaly when the raid ended, killed the golem, but I was really close to been killed several times on that stressfull raid XD

So i once went afk from pc and when i came back ive seen many blops in the hole around my village. Realized i was very lucky to survive event with 0loses while being afk when i came back. Was very happy that i made the hole around my village that morning haha 😂😂

Good heads up, if you build a trench around your base don't do it after the crest of a large hill or small mountain. I can't tell you how many times I never saw it and almost killed myself. Great trap otherwise.

I could be wrong, but I had an outpost with nothing but a crafting table and a fire. As soon as I placed a cooking pot over the fire, I got a raid 3m later. I did not have a bed.

Me and my friend build a gigantic house and we were so glad but when we both had to eat dinner we were AFK IN OUR HOUSE!! When I returned I had respawned in my mountain base and our house was half gone, we knew that the trolls did this.

i got raided once, by Skeletons, while sitting in the Mystlands next to a Portal, workbench and Bonefire... no base, nothing

If you leave the radius of the raid the timer pauses until you get back into the raid

We have a massive moat with no bridge we just jump over it so the only thing I’m scared of is the drakes

Didn't defeat bonemass yet, but trolls are still my biggest fear right now 😂 i only recently learned how to kill them, but i still prefer to use bows and arrows and just dodge their attacks than go meele

They come for your workbench or for your raft/boat! I've had them destroy those on numerous occasions and had to run all along the shore to get back to my base :(

single portal is enough to trigger raid. I built an offsite boar farm because trolls killed them several times at home, and made sure there was nothing but a portal there, still got raided. No bed, destroyed the workbench. no fire.

Day 65 and only had one raid, but since i"ve built on the sea the mobs don't even bother walking the bridge for some reason. Kinds sad because i'd like to defend such a raid

Troll raids is the only thing keeping me from killing the elder and progressing the game before i explore a good chunk of the game and build a decent base. Hell i even tamed wolves before i killed the elder.

Man I just got done killing the dear god and I just got back to my base just put everything away and then I got the forest is moving raid and it was also nighttime and raining so needless to say I got recked hard

I've been raided at my farm where I do not have a bed anywhere in close at all. I have a building with a workbench, portal, and fire, inside a large fence that also contains my boar farm.

I have killed the Elder and just working on exploring the swamp, I have probably had a dozen raids so far, but they have always been the greydwarves so far, is that right ?
