This is a fascinating videotaped adaptation of the 1934 Broadway play by Maxwell Anderson. Originally broadcast as part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame series of specials on December 3, 1975. The story concerns the American Revolutionary War encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and a planned escape by the men desperate to leave behind the terrible conditions of the winter - and George Washington's struggles to hold his army together at a critical point during the War.
Featuring future well-known actors Christopher Walken, Edward Hermann, John Heard, Lane Smith, Simon Ward, Victor Garber and Richard Basehart.
Gen. Washington: "I'll tell you what you're fighting for - -something that has never been on this green earth since man first worked it with his hands, and which does not exist and never will exist unless we put it there - the right of each man to govern himself in his own way."

These productions had great casts. A young Christopher Walken! Cloris Leachman, Richard Basehart - wonderful actors! Within the New York Harbor, where I live, Staten Island, Brooklyn and all points of Manhattan, we have acknowledged this, our history. The French acquired much of Staten Island and there are historical villages from the Revolutionary war. So many points reference the names of these Generals, Washington and Lafayette, points where these regiments stood and held, even where hangings of traitors occured. Every day, where I take a walk or drive they are all over. Watching this, I'm proud of that. Living in NJ, if you tell people George Washingtons' troops froze here, they wouldn't believe it, now with 90° days in October - Wonderful actors, left me with my eyes tearing. Thank you. Great content 😊

@@clairen8335 It was awesome, right?! ALL the ships coming into the Harbor and the fanfare! EVERY last person displayed their patriotism. Every home displayed the American Flag, is right. I live behind the Statue of Liberty, born and bred. We can wave to each other 🖐🏼

@@clairen8335 Those days, I'm afraid, are gone forever. We were a divided nation in 1976, with weak leadership, much of the national planning for the Bicentennial was fragmented & poorly-coordinated overall as a result. It was very difficult to get consensus among cities & states, each with their own interpretations of American History. Each state had its own Bicentennial Commission, I believe. Nevertheless, the celebrations across the land on July 4, 1976, a Sunday, were most satisfactory, soul-stirring, & happy. Despite all the divisions, admittedly not yet on the scale of today's, brought us together for a day. Pride ruled---golly, how we felt it, how we felt our love for the U.S.A. We hated our historical sins but loved the nation that put so many of those sins to right. No such celebrations will occur in 2026, the 250th anniversary of the U.S.A.'s birth, my prediction. It just can't happen. It's no longer possible.

I remember seeing this program when it first aired in 1975, one-and-a-half-years before the Bicentennial of July 4, 1976. Programs like this no longer are made. For many years now, American History's been under attack, distorted mercilessly beyond recognition, no consensus on how to interpret, much less celebrate it. No national TV network or cable channel today, no major newspaper, would dare air any program that places our nation's history in a positive light. From my perspective, it's looking very bleak for our 250th anniversary in 2026, very bleak indeed. I enjoyed seeing this program again. Audio volume was quite good. Image quality, though, quite poor. Would be nice to see a sharply-restored version but I'm still grateful for it!

@@oldmansportsog2514 Thanks! Actually, I'm aware of those programs but never watched when originally aired, or when rerun many times in recent years, though I did catch some glimpses occasionally. Until fairly recently, I wasn't really into that period of our history, though for several decades I was! Somehow, I got burned-out, never completely losing interest, of course, but no longer making a point of trying to catch such programs, new books, etc. With my realization of the approach of our 250th birthday only 2 years away, in 2026, however, I've recently begun thinking back to the great Bicentennial of 1976. Though a contentious era politically, with society & culture rapidly changing, creating an unsettling mixture of confusion, hope & pleasure over technological, especially medical, advances, & continued increase in leisure time, coupled with an overarching, miasmic lethargy & indifference about the U.S. in general, not helped by persistent inflation & a rollercoaster economy, there never was any question about the Bicentennial being recognized, celebrated, & commemorated by the nation as a whole, though in fragmented fashion. What emerged ultimately was a very fine, joyful, & patriotic atmosphere, along with much-needed discussions by historians of the country's imperfect and/or badly-taught history. I'm craving such a feeling again. I'm very doubtful I'm going to get it, though.

I like the scene where they tie up the officer who try to stop them and then a solider comes and takes his boots and his pants. Later when he informs Gen. Washington he tells him about his boots but doesn't say anything about his pants, too embarrassed to mention that.

Great cast! Madonna, Karen carpenter, Bob Dylan, Deborah harry, and Ann doing a variety of faces, and they were just kids. And provided financing. Ann was not a kid and neither is a daughter. A sick blasphemy was the dying officer's name changed to Lucifer. It was never Lucifer. The name was changed from Lawrence after filming.
