Valley of Dreams (Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah), New Mexico
You've probably heard of the Bisti Badlands in New Mexico. But just outside of Bisti is a lesser known location called Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah, or the Valley of Dreams. I've been the Valley of Dreams before and made a video of it. If you saw that video, you know that I went looking for a very specific rock formation called Alien Throne....and I didn't find it. That's always bothered me, so I was able to return to Valley of Dreams recently and renew the search. Did I find Alien Throne this time around? Guess you'll have to watch and see.
Getting to the Valley of Dreams is actually pretty easy. When I went the first time, I kept a track showing the route that I was following this time. Only it didn't work! Roads on my GPS seemed to not exist, even if they were roads I'd actually taken. But when I finally did figure it out, it was so much easier than my first trip. Take Highway 371 south out of Farmington, New Mexico. Turn onto County Road 7650. Turn onto County Road 7870. Turn off onto the unnamed road here: 36.123983, -107.989565. Drive a short distance, park and hike. You can see it from the road. The hike is fully exposed to sun, but also short and flat. So it's not too bad at all. Finding it is a lot tougher than hiking to it.
Valley of Dreams is an odd, alien landscape unlike anything I've ever seen. There are several different areas of rock formations, so make sure to explore. Also, please keep in mind that the formations can be fragile, so tread carefully to avoid causing any damage.
There is also an odd rock formation nearby called King of Wings. I've visited it on a previous trip, but didn't have time on this one.
Valley of Dreams is an incredible experience, and one I highly recommend. Check out this video for more information;

I just want to say that because of your beautiful footage of Ah Shi Sle Pah, and because I talked with a guest that told me about New Mexico, I took a trip to New Mexico to see if I could find Alien Throne. That was in April 2021. We never would have found it had we not stopped to help a man and his dogs who were on one of the roads that were were lost on trying to find HooDoo land!! While we were giving this man and his dogs water, a vehicle pulled up behind us after we had been trying to find it for about an hour. They were looking for Valley of Dreams also and had a trail map!!! I thought there would be a sign or something. Nope nothing but wild horses and washboard roads. We followed them to the parking area and walked down. It was surreal being there, I remember we parked up on top and walked in quite a ways into the first set of HooDoos. Then I saw other clusters of them spaced pretty widely apart. I looked for king of wings also, but could never find it. Perhaps it was in in one of the 4 clusters of Hoodoos that I saw while there? I only made it to three of the clusters. I am so glad that I went, nothing like it.

I'm going to the alien thrown next month. I found it on google maps, I can see it's across the wash and it looks like the wash where it bends points directly at it. I'm just going to go around to the back side of it and walk in, looks easier. I've been to chaco canyon several times and I had never heard about it then just went looking on the maps and wondered what that area was.

was it drone footage? I thought it might be on foot, drones aren't allowed in wilderness areas but I went on the wilderness area maps and it looks like the valley of dreams and the king of wings areas are outside the wilderness area. I pulled up the exact gps boundaries and as long as you stay to the west in the alien thrown area it should be fine.

We’re heading there in late June. Coming from Chaco from the south. Going to car camp two nights. Sleeping in our Element (AWD) with a bed and a rear hatch tent. Will have an EZ-UP for shade. Obviously, we will bring lots of water and a GPS device. Any other suggestions on where to make camp, etc is welcomed. Great videos. 👍🏽

Any chance in the future will you make a gear list? My hiking buddy and I love your videos. We're aiming for ultra light back packing but there are times we want to be boujee and back pack like Tina and yourself. P.S. if you make a boujee gearlist video can you please make the intro like when you got spotted at Buckskin Gultch!?🤣😎

I have a gear list video and things haven't changed much. We are so far from being ultralight. It was pretty experimental, so the video is far from your typical gear vid. I need to remake it someday. I'll see what I can work in for an intro....That one was fun to make, for sure.

Funny. I recently got a nasty comment about how I needed to shut up. Glad you like the narration. I find that just music and scenery gets boring fast. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to record, don't feel like it (it was 100 degrees this day) or what I record just doesn't end up making a coherent story. So sometimes I'm stuck with what I've got.

I have another video that gives more info on how to get here. It also includes directions to King of Wings, which is right nearby. Really strange thing on this trip. When I got there, I could not find the turn off that I took to Valley of Dreams on my first trip. Everything looked completely different. If I'm being honest, it freaked me out a little bit. That said, take the 371 south out of Farmington. Turn east on road 7650 (36.16526, -108.15104). After a bit, turn onto Road 7870 (36.19156, -108.02369). Those roads are fine for any vehicle as long as it's not really wet and muddy. There are several unmarked 'roads' that then take you closer to VoD. I actually saw tire tracks right up to VoD itself. I don't want to tell you which to take, since some of this is private property and I got so turned around on this trip. www.thewave.info/AhShiSlePahCode/Map.html That's the website I used to plan my first trip (which was a lot better planned than my second.) They give routes to get you closer. (I would not recommend taking an RV on the very last turn off/road to VoD they give; past the 7870.) However, you CAN get an RV within about 2~3 miles simply using 7870 and parking along that road and hiking in. Again, do some homework about where you can and can't park due to private property. Sorry I can't be more direct and helpful, but like I said, things were....weird this past trip. And I don't want to steer you onto private property and get you in trouble. BTW, White Sands is absolutely AMAZING. Enjoy.
@evansmiga96
@evansmiga96 4 жыл бұрын
@@JerryArizona wow this response is awesome. Thanks so much for the detail here. Yea, I've been mapping it out. I just wanted to make sure road 7870 isn't too sandy (was tough to tell from google satellite view) and we'll hike in due north from the road. We are psyched. White Sands looks awesome. I wish backcountry camping was open, but COVID takes another victim... heading from White Sands->Valley of Dreams->Primitive Camping in Chesler Park Canyonlands as the end of a 10 day loop. First starting in the Buckskin... bit of a dice roll this time of year, I know, but we'll have to be very diligent with weather. Your videos have been super helpful for destinations we will be hitting. Thanks again

@@evansmiga96 glad they're helpful. If you mean Buckskin Gulch, that place is amazing. I'm finishing up a video about the weather from our last trip there. And yeah. COVID has ruined plans for us for Salt Trail, the Grand Canyon, Zion Narrows and, most recently the West Coast Trail. Oh well. It can always be worse. Lots to see in that area you're looking at. Sounds like it'll be quite a trip. Enjoy. And any questions, feel free to ask.

@@evansmiga96 KoW parking is 36.18388889, -107.97166667. It's maybe a mile to the south. I think you could hike through from VoD to KoW. The road to the KoW trailhead (off the 7650) is definitely not RV friendly. Which reminds me. This is all open hiking. If you're going in July, it's going to probably be brutally hot for VoD and White Sands. Buckskin isn't as bad if you start early; once you're in buckskin you get into the shade. But I did VoD in June and it was 100 degrees. I enjoyed it a lot better when I went in the late fall. Think we did White Sands in February or something. It was actually cold at night.

Actually, this was my second trip. I have a video from my first trip as well. The first time, I used this to guide: www.thewave.info/AhShiSlePahCode/Map.html It worked great. Second time, I went with what I thought was the same gps routes....and things got strange. I didn't recognize a lot of the landscape and could not find the trailhead I used a couple years before. Honestly kind of freaked me out a bit. I recommend reading up on that site I linked and entering their routes into your GPS, then double checking with Google Earth.

@@johntuttle4486 it's hard to tell the scale of things on video. I think there's a shot of me walking toward Alien Throne in the vid at one point, but otherwise I'm not in the frame for scale. Most of these formations aren't that tall. It's been a while and I didn't have a tape measure, but I'd be surprised if they were over 15' tall at most. Like King of Wings.
