Be awesome if they restored that outer wall. I know that would never happen, but man I'd love to see what the Colosseum looked like in all its former glory.

Never understood why they don't build a replica outside Rome ,tourists would love it and the shows you could put on

I want to go back to Rome! As you were talking and walking, I was trying to imagine the glory of Rome at its' peak. I became lost in my imagination and had to go back and re-watch parts of this to hear your lecture.

Sadly I didn’t get to take any of that in when I went to visit the Coloseum. I really want to return to appreciate all of this valley. The person I was with sadly wasn’t into the history like I am to really take your time and do the tours and enjoy it all! It is spectacular! Thanks for sharing!

The relatively poor quality of sculpture by Constantine' s time shows why so many earlier monuments had to be plundered for ornamentation on the arch. I believe two of the Hadrianic tondi on the Colosseum side of the arch are embedded in purple stone (porphyry?). Is it Constantinian or was it, too, plundered from another monument?

It appears that Mussolini saved a number of ancient sites, but he also destroyed a number of sites. The old photos of Rome taken back in 1850 t0 1900 are very interesting.

As usual, a very educational video. Thank you Darius. Can I ask for a technical thing: Pls include the date you post these in the description. Without it, I can seldom tell, and then imprecisely, when was this made. As things are changing/reconstruction/new openings, it is very difficult to guess. (ould you pls make a video about the double temple of Venus-Roma, pls?)

Excellent tour, thank you. Given the existence of the two Meta fountains suggests to me that Nero's lake was likely filled not only by runoff, but by ground water. How did the builders of the Amphitheater get rid of the water?

He was a fascist madman who remodelled the ancient centre, to “put his stamp on it”. Worse still, he built the Via dei Fori Imperiali, the huge main road next to the extant Forum. They bulldozed through the Forums of Trajan, Augustus, and Ferva.

Mussolini did nothing different from what had always been done in the ancient cities, just on a larger scale. When Rome became the capital of Italy, long before Mussolini, monuments and neighborhoods were destroyed to build other monuments and neighborhoods. A sensational example is the Vittoriano. It was normal. P.S.: the last great architectural season in Italy occurred during fascism. It is a truth that makes the Italian left drool with anger every time it is remembered. P.S.2: In post-fascist Italy, there have been decades of devastation of cities by real estate interests but these are never talked about.
