In their own words, citizens of Valmeyer tell its story. From the first days of settlement as an idyllic village nestled against the bluffs in the beautiful Mississippi River Valley in Southern Illinois, to the dramatic events that threatened it’s very existence, to it’s rebirth on higher ground, this documentary is about Valmeyer.

This is an amazing video. Everyone did a remarkable job in creating this tribute to Valmeyer. I hope everyone gets an opportuinity to see this wonderful history. I really feel Dennis Knobloch deserves a great deal of credit for his faith and determination in creating the new Valmeyer and encouraging others to follow his path. One more thing, the song about Valmeyer by the Trophy Mules is so perfect.

Beautiful. You’ve come a long way since the Super 8 skateboard movies at the corner of Carriage Cove and Kingspark. I’m proud to have known you then.

This documentary is so well made. I have no connection whatsoever to Valmeyer yet I found this so entertaining, and could listen to the old folks tell their stories all day long. Would love to see a documentary like this on every small town, just hearing the stories from older residents and their experiences.

Despite the flood happening I love to come to this town because it is one of my favorite places to watch the trains along the Union Pacific Chester subdivision, they go about track speed through the town which is about 70 mph as well as they have a bit of The Rail lines history preserved with a Missouri Pacific caboose sitting in the town's city park. And with the town only being about 13 mi South from my hometown (Dupo) it is relatively easy to get to.

I was 11 years old when the Great Flood happened. I made a trip down to the Sny levee district before school started that fall with my father and some other area farmers from home in Windsor Illinois to deliver supplies to the civilian volunteers, Army Corp of Engineers, and the Army National Guard as well as several low boy trailers way overloaded with straw we bailed, begged, or bought from other area farmers to help patch boils and depressions in the levee a few weeks before it blew. One of the Corp and Guardsman were generous enough despite the impending doom on the other side of the levee to give us a tour of the pump-house and a few other places including their base camp. There one of the Guardsman gave me a bunch of memorabilia (sorry for lack of better term) that I still have today on display in my home bar-room including a six-pack of AB water, and several "I Fought the Flood of 93" bumper stickers that I still have today, 22 years later. My dad has always loved the river and the river towns up and down the Mississippi despite being a flatlander from east central Illinois. I can recall many trips as a young boy looking at the fall colors on the bluffs above the river and stops at the locks up and down the river. I remember the old church and bell at Kaskaskia island and the French architecture in Prairie de Rocher and stops in Valmeyer. I am looking forward to this summer as I am planning a motorcycle ride where I camp and cruise off of my bike while traveling the Mississippi and old route 66 (separate trips) I'm sure I'll make a stop in both Valmeyer locations.

This is gorgeous. Reminded us what we lost. I am glad the town stayed together and relocated, but must have been difficult. I am sure the bottom lands will flood again, but hopefully not in our lifetimes. Blessings from a neighbor in Waterloo.

Excellent documentary! I fly a paramotor around here and knew a little history, but this really was an eye opener regarding everything this town has been through. Much respect to all the residents and those who made this film.

Same thing happened in Gilboa, NY at the foot of the Gilboa dam. It got flooded so many times that the government said enough, bought out all the properties along the Schoharie Creek, demolished the buildings and forbided anyone from rebuilding.

With families, I found that "keeping the old homestead" is not what's important. My mom and dad lived in the same house for42 years then moved to a smaller double wide. When for the first time I visited after their relocation, it was home. Mom was doing what she was always doing and so was dad.

This documentary was extremely well done and is a very moving tribute to the town and its people. I'm honored that my band's song is featured in the closing credits. Had a lot of good times in that old town. Still remember the smells and sights of that flood and the days sandbagging in the quarry drinking AB water.

+Oxmann4 I still have a six-pack of the AB water in its plastic rings on display in my bar room at home. I was 11 but I still remember it like it was yesterdy. Scary yet fascinating to a young boy from 200 miles away. I have always been infatuated with the history, majesty, and danger of the river and I love visiting the neat towns along its banks

With all the major floods since then (1995, 2013, 2016, 2019) we've had, it's clear they made the right choice to move the town, and not just fix the levee.

Hi Alyssa, I live in Normal, IL and some of my Cousins Live/Lived in Valmeyer (the Siburts). I spent my Summer Vacation that year Sandbagging at St Gen just down the river. When we heard that the Levee above Valmeyer had broken my heart sank!! Then we heard that they were planning to dynamite the Levee above Prairie de Rouche, we were like "They're going to do WHAT???" Luckily, the plan worked, and BOTH Towns were saved!! I was PROUD that the Folks in Valmeyer Followed Dennis' Vision!!!

The town was built on a floodplain. There's a reason why it's called a floodplain. It's simple common sense to not want to live there in the first place.
